Duke Power

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Saw on the news last night that Duke has been granted a 7.2% rate increase by the NC Utilities Commission. I think we should all try to use 7.2% less watts.

I think they applied for the increase three years ago.

Maybe they can apply for a rate decrease since you know... gas prices were the reason for the increase? That excuse is gone...

Yeah right....

You're welcome; unplug things you don't use regularly and send McCrory hate mail.

My guess is the fine is cheaper than the total cost of the clean up. They probably made out like bandits.

As easily predicted on page 1 of this topic. Again, this is why Duke Power's stock was unaffected by the accident.

Say NO to More Pollution in North Carolina's Rivers and Streams!

Governor McCrory's administration wants to allow Duke Energy to dump even more toxic coal ash pollution into our state's waterways — the same untreated waste that spilled into the Dan River two years ago and left people across North Carolina with polluted drinking water. This proposal threatens our water, our health and our environment. Take action — tell the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality to do its job and protect, not poison, our state's waterways.

Neighbors angered by latest coal ash news about Duke Energy

Last week, Charlotte-based news station WBTV released a slew of incriminating emails and documents revealing potential collusion between Duke Energy and University of North Carolina at Charlotte professors John Daniels and Bill Langley, who were supposedly conducting independent research regarding the safety of drinking water at homes near the utility’s coal ash ponds. These emails detail a process whereby Duke Energy provided what it called “strongly suggested edits” that downplayed the role of coal ash in groundwater contamination in those communities, providing Duke an avenue to avoid excavating coal ash from its leaking ash basins.

“All of this just creates further concerns about Duke Energy’s honesty as well as how North Carolina is going to step up and respond to this information,” says Deborah Graham, who lives near the Buck Steam Station in Salisbury, N.C. ...

I'm not sure [power company name] and "honesty" can properly be used in the same sentence.

Court sees if church solar panels break electricity monopoly

North Carolina's highest court is taking up a case that could force new competition on the state's electricity monopolies.

The state Supreme Court on Tuesday will consider the Utilities Commission's decision to fine clean-energy advocacy group NC WARN for putting solar panels on a Greensboro church's rooftop and then charging it below-market rates for power.

The commission told NC WARN that it was producing electricity illegally and fined the group $60,000. The group said it was acting privately and appealed to the high court....

North Carolina was one of nine states that as of last year explicitly disallowed residential customers from buying electricity generated by solar panels on their roof from a third party that owns the system, according to the North Carolina Clean Energy Technology Center. State law allows purchased or leased solar panels, but not payments simply for the power they generate.

NC WARN's goals included "reducing the effects of Duke Energy's monopoly control that has such negative impacts on power bills, clean air and water, and climate change," the church's pastor, Rev. Nelson Johnson, said in a statement the same day the clean-energy group asked state regulators to clear the plan....
NC WARN & Faith Community Church = capitalists saving the planet.
NC GOP & Duke = monopolists destroying the planet.
