America's Got Talent

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

This could be you, JTA. Of course, you're not old enough to mimic John Hetlinger, but maybe a door knocking Jehovah's Witness headbanger would be as unusual.

All right, let's get serious here for a few moments. I see the video posts that are being posted, but they appear as gray boxes with a start arrow in the center. I can click on the arrow, and the video will play. (at first there was nothing; Vrede even told JTA he could not see his link(s) )

When the video does start, a caption states that "The YouTube Flash API was officially deprecated on January 27th., 2015"

OK; so I look up the definition of 'deprecated' and I found this:

Deprecate
[dep-ri-keyt]

verb (used with object), deprecated, deprecating.

1. to express earnest disapproval of.
2.to urge reasons against; protest against (a scheme, purpose, etc.).
3.to depreciate; belittle.
4.{Archaic} to pray for deliverance from.

Huh. . . ?

Usually, I have to click on the "Click to run Adobe Flash Player" to get the video to start. :wtf:
I've even gotten drop-downs telling me to update to the latest Adobe Flash Player; I already have the latest. I'm wary about clicking on these notices because of the possibility of hidden Trojans and other malware from unofficial Adobe notices.

Anyone else experiencing issues? I heard AFP was going to be removed from Microsoft completely because their edgebrowser has a flash player built in, as well as does Google Chrome. I'm running Opera because I don't like either of those, and IE is too heavily laden with problems that slow down my PC.

"Deprecate" is the proper word, used industry wide. Whenever Adobe or Oracle or Microsoft removes a function from their API (Application Programmer Interface), they declare it depreciated. Which is annoying for those of us who used those API calls in our own programs.

All of Adobe's Flash should be depreciated as a massive ongoing unfixable security nightmare. Java and Adobe's Reader too. These should not be on your system unless you absolutely need them. (Use a different PDF viewer.)

I only see blank space where someone posts a YouTube video, and so I don't always catch that one is posted. To view one I have to 'View Source', grab the video ID, call up another video at YouTube, and swap in the ID.

This is why, when I post a YouTube video here, I include a link.

Thanks. Maybe you aren't too bad after all. Stay on your meds though, they make you more tolerable.

I never knew that they mean exactly the same thing. I always thought that "deprecate" was more pejorative.

I wouldn't know what the industry norm is, but it looks like "deprecated" would be okay, too.

Dictionaries tend to treat depreciate and deprecate as mostly separate words with different meanings. Type the two words into Google for example, and you get different meanings in their dictionary results.

Not that I would know or really care other than liking etymology, but why then are you saying that depreciated is the industry norm for the past tense of deprecate? Just an industry or English quirk?

Nope; depreciated is the past tense of depreciate.

dictionary.com gives *mostly* different definitions:

depreciate
1. to reduce the purchasing value of (money).
2. to lessen the value or price of.
3. to claim depreciation on (a property) for tax purposes.
4. to represent as of little value or merit; belittle.

From the Late Latin dēpretiātus - undervalued

deprecate
1. to express earnest disapproval of.
2. to urge reasons against; protest against (a scheme, purpose, etc.).
3. to depreciate; belittle.
4. Archaic. to pray for deliverance from.

From the Latin dēprecātus - prayed against, warded off

Saw that, my post was based on deprecate #3 and depreciate #4 being a pejorative.

Okay, but didn't you use depreciated as the past tense of deprecate here?

The end of the month is drawing near. You might want to log in to your "Insult of the Month Club" website and pick out a new insult. You've worn this one out. You've still got 4 days, so you might want to beat the rush.

bigoted: according to you, because you've not sense enough to know what it means.
homophobic: more of your :bs: You've not seen anything I've written that even resembles homophobia
racist: more of your childish :bs: You've not seen anything I've written that even resembles racism
misogynistic: the most ignorant of your name calling. I have no hatred for anyone, even you.
goddamned stupid trash-bin fire: what happened to train wreck? A trash-bin fire must be a common sight in Canada; so damn cold, people too stupid to come in out of the cold, so they light up a trash bin
a human being: I'm definitely one of those. I'm sorry there's none to be found in your world.

Nope, wrong again, Mr. Condescending Narcissist. This is exactly how I copied and pasted it off the video screen:
The YouTube Flash API was officially deprecated on January 27th., 2015

My new truck depreciated when I drove it off the lot; now take another look at the definition I posted.

And you couldn't figure out that the word I posted was spelled differently and had a different definition than "depreciate". Sad.
