Well .... it's so. A question asked of Cosby in 2005!

Lawyer: "When you got the Quaaludes, was it in your mind that you were going to use these Quaaludes for young women that you wanted to have sex with?"

Bill Cosby: "Yes."

APNewsBreak: Cosby said he got drugs to give women for sex

That sorry so and so !

What's with celebrities who think their wealth will buy their way out of their troubles every time? Sure, I've heard the old "money talks and bullsh*t walks" over and over, but how long is that going to be a part of us? Why did a judge decide 10 years ago that this case merited no further investigation?

I'm reminded of the late Michael Jackson and his paying off his accuser(s) to buy their silence; and these two incidences of payoffs are just the ones that stand out because of the popularities of these two.

"Payoff" seems to have a negative connotation with you. Suppose we use "settlement" would that make a difference? Is there anything wrong with saying, "I did something wrong to you...here's some money." And from the wronged person's point of view, is there anything wrong with saying, "you're a scummy asshole pervert, but I'll take the money as some degree of retribution." If I'm the wronged person, I could choose to report Bill (or whoever) to the police, with an unlikely but best possible outcome he'll actually be charged and convicted. So he's penalized, but I've got nothing. I can then bring suit in civil court, with relatively modest chance of collecting after a couple of years or more of litigation, Or - I can take the money and run. To quote John Quiñones, "what would you do?"

Good point, though I would hope that my concern and compassion for potential future victims would carry some weight with the choice I made.

Big of you. Not helping the real injured bird in hand in case two others in the bush might get injured in the future. Yer a bigger man than I, Gunga Din.

I said "carry some weight", not be an absolute. It would depend on the particulars.

I also said "I would hope". I'm not immune to self interest.

What's ironic is that Cosby's downfall wasn't so much what he did, but because he spent so much time as a sanctimonious ass.
From the judge who released the transcript...

"This case, however, is not about Defendant’s status as a public person by virtue of the exercise of his trade as a televised or comedic personality. Rather, Defendant has donned the mantle of public moralist and mounted the proverbial electronic or print soap box to volunteer his views on, among other things, childrearing, family life, education, and crime. To the extent that Defendant has freely entered the public square and “thrust himself into the vortex of th[ese] public issue,” he has voluntarily narrowed the zone of privacy that he is entitled to claim."

Wiser words are rarely spoken, m'friend. Everything exists within its context. That's something most rightwingers never seem to understand, which is why they're always wanting a one-size-fits-all, yes/no, this/that all/nothing, heritage/hate solution.

Yeah, as bad as what it appears he did, he even looks more foolish
because he spent so many years lecturing other people about their
behavior. Low riding pants don't really compare with rape.

President Obama weighs in:

"Anytime someone drugs a woman, or man for that matter, for the purpose of having sex with them, that's rape!"

Well said. So far, Cosby has admitted to only one drugging.

‘I’m No Longer Afraid’: 35 Women Tell Their Stories About Being Assaulted by Bill Cosby, and the Culture That Wouldn’t Listen

Powerful. 11 others are not pictured/interviewed.

Some may be mistaken or lying, but all of them? Lots of people turn out to have feet of clay, but I can't think of any that went from being so loved to so despised so quickly. Can you?

Yeah, I think it wasn't so much the glass house as those stones he's been throwing most of his life. I think also the method - drugging them - doesn't sit well. What - he couldn't get somebody in bed without the drugs? I'd guess he could have, but chose the way to eliminate all power and choice from the women. That adds a lot to the sleaze factor.
