The Question Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Question for you all. I can't find the info online:

What are the benefits of using a Roth IRA? Money placed in a Roth is already taxed when invested, so when you take money out years down the line, it won't be taxed again unlike money placed in a 401k, which is untaxed when initially invested. I understand this, and the reason you'd choose one over the other depending on how you think you'll fair financially when it comes time to retire.

There are penalties for touching the money in a Roth IRA, like a 401k, until a certain age.

My question is: why not just invest the money yourself, say, in an ETF or mutual fund, instead of investing money in these via a Roth IRA? That way you have some funds available to you should you need access to it that won't incur a penalty when withdrawn. But you can still set it and forget it it, and think long term. What are the benefits of using a Roth?

Roth IRA

A Roth IRA (individual retirement arrangement) is a retirement plan under US law that is generally not taxed, provided certain conditions are met. The tax law of the United States allows a tax reduction on a limited amount of savings for retirement. The Roth IRA's principal difference from most other tax-advantaged retirement plans is rather than granting a tax reduction for money placed into the retirement plan, the money withdrawn from the Roth IRA plan during retirement is not taxed (with some restrictions), meaning that interest gains on the account are tax-free.

... Differences from a traditional IRA

In contrast to a traditional IRA, contributions to a Roth IRA are not tax-deductible. Withdrawals are tax-free under certain conditions (for example, if the withdrawal is only on the principal portion of the account, or if the owner is at least 59½ years old). A Roth IRA has fewer withdrawal restrictions than traditional IRAs. Transactions inside a Roth IRA (including capital gains, dividends, and interest) do not incur a current tax liability.

Advantages ...

Disadvantages ...

Oh that makes sense now. If I shoved 10k into a Roth, and it grew to 50k, none of those gains would be taxed as capital gains, vs. investing the money myself in at ETF or some stocks or something.

I'm no expert on Roths, and have never looked into them very far. But I think the main thing is that once you've invested your after-tax funds, then no earnings are taxed as long as you keep the plan for 5(?) years and get to age 59 and a half before withdrawal. If you took the same after-tax funds and invested them yourself, you'd have capital gains tax on the earnings. But really, with a max contribution of $5,500 and an earnings eligibility amount less than $118K, the savings are mostly Republican smoke and mirrors.

Anyone know if this is accurate

I couldn't copy the list of fox Catholics, but seems as if nearly all are Catholic. Wait till the KKK finds out.

... Below are the names and religions of FOX NEWS broadcasters. FOX NEWS is ALMOST ALWAYS UNFAIR and UNBALANCED:

1. Bill O’Reilly-Catholic
2. Megyn Kelly- Catholic
3. Bret Baier-Catholic
4. Sean Hannity – Catholic
5. Steve Doocy –Catholic
6. Peter Doocy-Catholic

26. Terry Keenan-Catholic
27. Meghan McCain-Catholic
28. Arthel Neville-Catholic
29. Linda Chavez-Catholic
30. Newt Gingrich-Catholic (formerly a Baptist)

Charles Krauthammer- atheist
Greg Gutfeld - atheist
Greta Van Susteren – is member of the Scientologist cult ...
I made two guesses as to who might not be Catholic. My first guess:
In a January 2012 episode of The View, (Elisabeth) Hasselbeck revealed that she no longer thought of herself as a Catholic. “I was raised Catholic. I consider myself Christian now,” she said.

My second guess:
According to what she (Meghan McCain) has said on The View, even though she went to a Catholic school she grew up a Baptist and remains one.

I quit after two.

Greta Van Susteren is indeed a Scientologist.

Hell yes! No accountability lets peoples demonic sides out. The internet is such a mixed bag, but at least there's free porn.

The anonymous internet certainly makes us act shittier to one another online than we would IRL. IDK whether it also makes us act shittier to one another IRL. We can measure things like crime, but how do we measure rudeness? For every reichwing site there are tolerant sites, for every stalking, hateful, immoral bigot like Mr.B there are other decent people connecting like GoCubsGo and JTA.

Then, some of that time that would otherwise be spent on shittiness is instead taken up by looking at free porn and cute cat videos. :o :D

How do you account for 6% of black men and 2% of black women voting for a man who believes the old times with slavery represent the best times?

If ever there were occasion for a 0%, this was it.

You can't account for that by any rational manner. Particularly when you consider Jones' civil rights work and KKK kicking. But I'm guessing most of those voting for Moore would have been named "Tom".

I guess in some ways it makes it easier to be honest direct, especially when at least some level of anonymity is involved.

I can't imagine having some of the atheist conversations I've had with Christians IRL without getting shot or in a fight, and it's not because I'm intentionally being shitty, it's because I'd be offending their sensitive feelings just by trying to discuss something rationally.

Maybe the internet is making us act less shitty to one another, they can't shoot me over the internet yet. Still doesn't stop them from trying to stalk me to shoot me though. Look at the scary mess Mr. B. started.

Evangelicals - abortion and homophobia more important than all else, even though those were two topics that Moore was likely to accomplish the least on.
