Tree Hugger Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

The petition to Sen. Chuck Schumer reads:

"Senator Joe Manchin is the worst possible choice to lead Senate Democrats' work on energy policy. Do not allow a senator in the pocket of the coal industry to serve as the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources."

Sign our petition and let NC DEQ know that you support their proposed permit that adds protections for communities and waterways near large scale hog industry operations.

Oppose Oil Drilling in the Arctic’s Beaufort Sea

I often don't share these petitions because we know that certain Trumpette agency heads don't give a damn about what Americans think. However, it was a pleasure changing the salutation to read, "Dear Secretary Zinke's replacement:".

The EPA is accepting public comments on Trump’s Dirty Water Rule. Help us rally a public outcry by calling on Acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler to reject Trump’s reckless plan and protect our drinking water.

Thank You for an Inspiring, Action-Packed 2018!
Now Let's Close the Door on Nuclear Power in 2019
It's Time for a Green New Deal and a Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free World!

Your activism and support has had an incredible impact this year--right when the world has needed it most!

This year, in the face of political and environmental crises we haven't seen in decades--including proposals to promote nuclear power and spread radioactive waste across the country--the safe energy movement responded. We have major fights ahead of us in 2019, but this year we proved that--together--we can close the door on nuclear power, for good.

Let's make next year the beginning of the end of nuclear power.

Here's a recap of just a few of the victories, highlights, and milestones for the No Nukes movement in 2018:

Stopped Trump's first massive nuclear-and-coal bailout.
Prevented nuclear bailouts in two states: Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Added five more reactor closure announcements--bringing the total to 12 shutdowns by 2025.
Blocked passage of Nuclear Waste America legislation for the sixth consecutive year.
Mobilized over ten thousand to stop nuclear waste dumps proposed in Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas.
And last but not least--won a major Don't Nuke the Climate victory at the COP24 Global Climate Summit ... and a commitment from Germany to block financing for nuclear power under the Paris Climate Treaty.

This is progress we can build on in 2019--with your support....

It doesn't always feel like each email to our elected officials, every petition we sign, or the next protest makes enough of a difference. Sometimes it's hard to see the real progress we are making when we are in climactic times.

But despite that, and with thousands and thousands of us joining together and mobilizing, time and time again ... our actions make a real impact. Nuclear corporations want us to feel small, isolated, ineffective, unqualified to speak out. The truth is just the opposite.

We can and we will make a nuclear-free, carbon-free world ... not despite the odds, but because the odds are in our favor: we have each other, we show up, we speak out, as long and as many times as we need to....

The momentum for a sustainable energy revolution is building. With every reactor that closes ... every radioactive waste dump we stop ... and people across the country rallying for a Green New Deal ... the work we do in 2019 is crucial. Your activism and your support are more important now than ever.

Thanks for all you do to make a nuclear-free, carbon-free world!

Stop Trump’s (deafening seismic) Assault on Whales And Dolphins!

The Dirty Scheme to Make Americans Buy More Gasoline
The Trump administration has been bowing to oil companies to try and gut commonsense rules that were saving people billions of dollars and helping to protect our climate.

... In a cynical confession, Gary Heminger, chairman of Marathon Petroleum, boasted to analysts last week that weakening the clean car rules would boost gasoline sales by up to 16.8 million gallons a day.

At $2.65 a gallon, the national November average, that comes to $44.5 million a day, or more than $16 billion a year, money that American workers won’t be able to spend on their families’ needs because it will go, instead, to the oil industry. “However,” Heminger warned investors, “you have another side who doesn’t want to pivot away” from the fuel savings and pollution reductions the rules support. “So we have a lot of work to do to keep this momentum going.” ...

He's also made loud noise about the need to do something about the red tide problem. To do anything other than cosmetic, he'll have to take on some well-funded opponents in the sugar and ag people.
  • From National Geographic: "Florida isn’t just suffering from red tide. The inland waterways are clogged with yet another bloom of vibrant green cyanobacteria. Runoff from cattle farms and residential developments that lie north of the state's largest freshwater body, Lake Okeechobee, carries in nutrients, turning its waters into a thick green smoothie.

Development and sugar farms south of the lake prevent the natural trickling and filtering of overflow through the Everglades. Instead, to prevent flooding of nearby towns, heavy rains force engineers to release polluted water into the estuaries that lead out to the sea. The problem has worsened in recent years—and solutions are mired in politics."
But yeah, if he actually works on addressing the real problem and doesn't just harumpph about it, it would be good and better than I would have expected from someone of his ilk.

Latest Trump Tweet:
I am pleased to announce that David Bernhardt, Acting Secretary of the Interior, will be nominated as Secretary of the Interior. David has done a fantastic job from the day he arrived, and we look forward to having his nomination officially confirmed!
David Bernhardt: Legal work and lobbying

Bernhardt served as DOI Solicitor until 2009. That year he rejoined the Colorado-based law firm Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck. Bernhardt became a shareholder in the firm and chairman of the firm's natural resources law practice. Bernhardt's clients included Halliburton, Cobalt International Energy, Samson Resources, and the Independent Petroleum Association of America.

Through Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, Bernhardt represented San Joaquin Valley’s Westlands Water District in "a lawsuit that sought to undo court-imposed protections for endangered salmon in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta." Berhardt also represented entities such as the proposed Rosemont Copper open pit mine in Arizona. Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck was involved in representing other mining, oil, and extractive industries, as well as projects such as the Cadiz, Inc. groundwater pumping project in the Mojave Desert in California. Cadiz later refuted that Bernhardt had lobbied directly for the company, though environmentalists at the non-profit Center for Biological Diversity suspected Bernhardt's involvement when the DOI changed its views to be positive towards the project in March 2017.

In 2011, Bernhardt filed a lawsuit for Westlands that "sought to force the feds to make good on a commitment to build a multibillion-dollar system to dispose of the poisoned water" resulting from toxic irrigation in the Westlands district. Later, through the 2017 bill HR 1769, Westlands agreed to drop the lawsuit in exchange for forgiven debt and long-term access to water from Central Valley Project facilities. In April 2017, the House Natural Resources Committee approved the settlement, but rejected an amendment that would have "barred former Westlands officials or lobbyists — meaning Bernhardt — from working on the drainage issue for five years."

Polls are showing as high as 79% support for the Green New Deal. Repugs are scared:
Thank you for taking the time to contact me about the Green New Deal. I appreciate hearing from you.

On February 7, 2019, Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) introduced S.Res. 59, a resolution recognizing the duty of the federal government to create a Green New Deal. The resolution sets forth a series of “Green New Deal goals” to meet within the next 10 years, including the elimination of all greenhouse gas emissions, transitioning our energy grid to 100% renewable energy, and upgrading all existing buildings in the United States to maximize energy efficiency.

This Green New Deal is impracticable and simply unachievable. S.Res. 59 states that “climate change, pollution, and environmental destruction have exacerbated systematic racial, regional, social, environmental, and economic injustices,” but it contains a series of proposals that would bring irreparable harm to low-income and rural communities.

For example some economists have estimated that the cost of retrofitting all 95 million homes in the country would cost more than $400 billion. Now, if you break that down as a cost placed on reducing carbon dioxide emissions, it would equate to as much as $285 for every ton of carbon dioxide that is not emitted into the environment. That is $135 more per ton than the Obama Administration’s finding that carbon dioxide emissions resulted in $50 per ton of economic hardship.

Furthermore, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), the lead sponsor on the House companion resolution, said in a supporting document outlining the goals of the Green New Deal that the proposal would guarantee “economic security to all who are unable or unwilling to work.” The underlying objective of this “Deal” is to institute outrageous tax increases on hardworking Americans and redistribute the money to people and businesses based on who liberals determine should be winners and losers. In other words, it is the first step in reshaping American government into a socialist regime.

I want to be clear. I do not support the Green New Deal.

I am choosing to seek real, tangible solutions to the very serious problems that face our state, which is on the front lines of sea level rise and increasingly frequent natural disasters. When I was in the North Carolina General Assembly, I helped negotiate the Renewable Portfolio Standard and design a tax system that was attractive to solar and renewable technologies. I have since continued to be an advocate for renewable energy, fighting the Trump Administration’s tariffs that have crippled the industry. I am also working with North Carolina’s military installations to ensure they are climate resilient and become an archetype for good federal government environmental policies.

I will continue working with my colleagues, Republican and Democrat alike, to find responsible and achievable policies that work for all Americans. We must use an all of the above strategy to adapt, become more resilient, and to mitigate damages from climate change. There are policies that can help bend the curve of human contributions to the climate crisis, but the Green New Deal is not one of them.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. Please do not hesitate to contact me again about other important issues.

Sincerely,

Thom Tillis (R-NC)
U.S. Senator
