Every time I look at the models for Hurricane Irma it seems to zero in more and more on NC, possibly a Category 4. I'm guessing that ends any chance of being called to Texas.

Rats. Giant swamp rats.
Today, on a travel site I visit, locals mentioned "rafts of fire ants." Ouch!
I should volunteer to bust up fire ant rafts.

Not to mention -
Spoiler:
Texans.
Toxic waste sites flooded in Houston area

... Long a center of the nation's petrochemical industry, the Houston metro area has more than a dozen Superfund sites, designated by the Environmental Protection Agency as being among America's most intensely contaminated places. Many are now flooded, with the risk that waters were stirring dangerous sediment....
Booming Houston built over land meant for flood projects

The explosive expansion of Houston subdivisions into prairies far to the west helped make the city affordable for the average 345 people who moved there each day, but it also paved over thousands of acres that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had intended for a reservoir and other flood-control projects to help against deluges like the ones from Harvey....

Greetings, Responders,

We've heard from several of you asking for updates or for information regarding deployments to Texas to assist with the relief efforts due to Hurricane Harvey. At this point, there have not been any requests for NC SMRS (State Medical Response System) resources (material or human) to be deployed to Texas.

Here's are excerpts that we received via email from NCOEMS (NC Office of Emergency Medical Services) on Wednesday:

Federal Coordinating Centers (FCCs) and healthcare facilities in North Carolina are NOT being alerted or activated for the evacuation and movement of patients out of affected areas in Texas. We will not be initiating bed counts or any additional measures to be taken at this time.

This is for a couple of reasons:
The desire is to keep patients and family members as close to their homes and communities as possible, and
As we are still in hurricane season, with another system developing in the Atlantic, North Carolina and other coastal states remain under potential impact.
There have not been any EMAC requests for health and medical support to Texas or Louisiana at this time. Currently, state officials are looking to current federal resources deployed, as well as resources in adjacent states.

Tropical Storm Irma is developing in the Atlantic, and while it's too early to determine her future path. North Carolina's response system MUST continue to consider the fact that we are moving into peak hurricane season for the east coast. We must maintain operational readiness to support possible events in NC and our surrounding neighbors.

This may all change as situations contine to develop. We encourage all of our team members to check and update go-packs and personal deployment supplies. I've attached a packing list of recommended personal supplies for deployments. In the meantime, we will continue to provide updates as they become available to us....

The current models show the white line average track on FL's eastern coast, but at Category 5 all of FL still gets devastated. Could even be worse for you since it'll retain strength by not being on land. Then, it makes landfall again at Charleston, SC and eventually goes straight through my Hendersonville, NC.

Weather channel this morning showed the European model with highest chance of being in the gulf before turning to the north.

But I'm would much rather that you be right.

It's been one year since a SpaceX Falcon 9 static fire test on the SLC-40 launch pad was reclassified as a Catastrophic Anomaly Test (CAT). Repairs on the launch pad are scheduled to be finished right about now. They won't get to use it before Irma hits.

A Falcon 9 is launching the Boeing X-37B on Thursday.

FL is so skinny that a little directional change seems big. Now, WU's "5 Day Forecast" is saying Gulf first, Category 4, while its "Ensemble Models" average is still saying Atlantic side, eventually west of Hooterville. The European model seems to be consistently more accurate, not sure why we still have a US model.

The main point to ND is to keep SD from bordering Canada. I'm not sure why y'all have Manitoba.

Looks like y'all haven't run out of booze yet.

5 Day - Straight up the middle of FL, Category 3 after landfall.
Ensemble Models - Average barely east of FL.

Even barely east is good. For that matter, right up the center is good for me. My pick of the spaghetti lines is the purple one that hooks out to sea.

Y'all remember Frances in 2004? Baltimore Village was washed away, and we had the highest water ever here.
If we get a repeat, it will be even worse, because of all the impermeable surface added since then.

All the local kennels are filling up with 4 legged evacuees from Florida. If Irma hits Charleston, there will be no room at the inn.

I'm obsessing over this, yet there's nothing to do but wait and see.

Was reading a thread on a camping subreddit and a poster made a good point. He was watching people buy tons of shitty food like Pop tarts and other processed stuff and generators to keep their fridges running. He mentioned how going backpacking has taught him some basics that are useful in situations where power will be out for extended periods of time and none of it is rocket science, just stuff the average person might not be aware of. And nothing wrong with that, really. It is what it is.

Dry rice/beans/qunoi/couscous doesn't need refridgeration. Spice it up or make meals in advance. Canned stuff works too - tuna, chicken, etc. Hell, freeze dried chicken is another.

Sawyer squeeze water filter for potable water, provided you're not grabbing it from water that's been contaminated with chemicals.

Little mini camping stove for cooking food and even making water potable.

Of course it's just easier to buy a bunch of bottled water or fill some jugs up yourself.

But I guess if you camp and backpack, you're already a tad bit more prepared than the average Joe in some cases.

Hell, I've got like four pounds left out of a ten pound bag of qunoia. It's qunoia for breakfast, lunch, and dinner fellas.
You aren't doing it wrong if no one knows what you are doing.

Sitting in the sun covered by wet towels does pretty good. Besides, it's not like Bud Light tastes good to start with.

Lotta time for variations, but at the moment - Miami, back to sea to maintain or regain strength, Charleston, up the GA border, WNC, dip into TN, then severe dogleg back into WNC! Party at the O Really's RV in Moab, everyone invited!
