You're not in Florida? ...
JTA lives in Greenville, SC. Boatrocker is somewhere in SC, too.
billy.pilgrim lives in N. FL. O Really parks in S. FL part time, but he's now in UT.
Oliver! lives in S. FL, upstate SC (2 places) and Mills River, NC all at the same time. So, he will really get drenched. Must be God's will.

They're now saying that Irma will pass over Atlanta, but we'll still get a continuous dumping from the first pass and dogleg.

Cat 2 Hurricane Katia will strike tonight north of the area just blasted by an 8.1 earthquake, but Mexican relief efforts for both will now be much more difficult. :(

Question. When evacuating, especially in dire conditions like south Florida, what about prisons? I'm talking maximum security down to county jails. What happens to them?
Usually they don't move them. Prisons and even local jails can resist hurricanes and they aren't usually in flood areas. There was a picture from Katrina, though, of prisoners up to their waists in water inside the jail. The prisons have generators and most have systems to lock down if the power fails. I'm guessing, however, that Barney would probably just let Otis out.

billy.pilgrim, let us know that you're okay as soon as you can after it's over, please. The latest track is right on top of him. Otoh, weaker for us since staying on land, now TD rather than TS.

Well, I guess the St. Petersburg threw me off. Am I missing something?

I thought we were reasonably safe with the westward movement of the forecast track. Andrew was supposed to pound us, but stayed over in Tennessee. Then I saw a comparison. We might get pounded yet.

The current models show the white line average track on FL's eastern coast, but at Category 5 all of FL still gets devastated. Could even be worse for you since it'll retain strength by not being on land. Then, it makes landfall again at Charleston, SC and eventually goes straight through my Hendersonville, NC.
Weather channel this morning showed the European model with highest chance of being in the gulf before turning to the north.

But I'm would much rather that you be right....
I'm sorry, and back to Cat 5 before hitting. Good luck.

She's not moving very far between 2pm Tuesday and 2pm Wednesday. For us, it all depends on how far out she flings those rain bands.

Billy.pilgrim, keep us apprised if possible. Most important, be safe.

I'm way west of all the estimated tracks I've seen, but this right turn before the hot gulf water makes this thing bigger is beginning to look like a fantasy

Ah, I couldn't remember if you are out on the panhandle or just N. FL. Glad for you that it's the former.

Seems some prisoners do get evacuated.
OK. I know, as a weather junkie, I am obsessed, and I spend way too much time following storms.

Our Medicare fraud governor is still freaking out about storm surge. I see it in the Keys and even to Lauderdale, but the west coast will have offshore winds.

I worry more and more that they don't have a clue when this thing is going to turn and the gulf is currently at record high temps.

until the storm passes, then the southwest wind pushes the water onshore.

I've been reading all the weather geeks' comments at Weather Underground. It's a minute by minute report.
"It's turned."
"No, that's a wobble."

"Look how she's grown!"
"Yep. The Gulf is her energy drink."
