Federal (appeals) court orders new NC legislative elections in 2017

North Carolina lawmakers must redraw their legislative districts by March 15 and hold new elections by the end of next year, a federal court ruled Tuesday.

That order follows up on a ruling from this summer that found lawmakers had unconstitutionally relied on race when they drew 28 state House and Senate districts.

Although lawmakers had told the court they should be given more time to redraw their districts and should not have to hold elections until 2018, a three-judge panel disagreed.

"This gives the State a total of seven months from the time the districts were held to be unconstitutional, which is longer than it took the 2011 legislature to redistrict the entire state," read the order....
Yep, the racist, Constitution-hating NC GOP threw away a bunch of our money, again.

This, along with McCrory apparently being on the cusp of officially crushed, is definitely good news in a month of misery. I wonder what havoc the worthless scumbags will try to get by with before having to run for office again. More attempts at voter suppression, I'd guess.

Oh yes - that should be a big help, too. And unless the Republislugs really do try to pack the Supreme Court, we'll have a leg up there, too.

I'm pretty sure there remain some significant differences. NC is under occupation of a hostile force, and large numbers of the populace are joining the resistance. Those other states are generally happy just to wallow in their own mud.

Agreed, but a statewide re-do of the election is a pretty big deal.

France's Macron appears set for Elysee in runoff with Le Pen

Centrist Emmanuel Macron took a big step towards the French presidency on Sunday by winning the first round of voting and qualifying for the May 7 runoff alongside far-right leader Marine Le Pen.

Though Macron, 39, is a comparative political novice who has never held elected office, new opinion polls on Sunday had him easily winning the final clash against the 48-year-old Le Pen....

Conceding defeat even before figures from the count came in, rival conservative and Socialist candidates urged their supporters now to put their energies into backing Macron and stopping any chance of a second-round victory by Le Pen, whose anti-immigration and anti-Europe policies they said spelled disaster for France....

A new Harris survey saw Macron winning the runoff by 64 percent to 36, and an Ipsos/Sopra Steria poll gave a similar result....
Pre-Trump election Brexit was a shocker to many. Since then, Holland and now France have rejected rightwing nationalistic populism. I think Germany is up next while the UK will soon reaffirm the current government.

Macron wins French presidency by emphatic margin: projections

... Three projections, issued within minutes of polling stations closing at 8 p.m. (2 p.m. ET), showed Macron beating Le Pen by around 65 percent to 35 - a gap wider than the 20 or so percentage points that pre-election surveys had pointed to....

I'm not following it closely, but I think the cons are doing well there. What are you referring to? Could say more about the weakness of the left than the strength of the cons, though. Anyhow, their cons are well left of our cons.

Ouch, and the special election is today. Maybe it'll inspire some otherwise nonvoters. I guess we'll see.
