President* Trump

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Besides the obvious though perhaps dubious appeal of the Kennedy name, I suspect that the Dems fear further alienating the whiny white males they lost in 2016.

I hope people don't think it's Carrot Top or Shaun White. ;)

The Spanish response will be given by State Delegate Elizabeth Guzmán, one of three first ever Hispanic women elected to the Virginia House in 2017.

Brand new POTUSes don't give SOTU speeches, but the Dem response to President* Trump's February 2017 speech to a joint session of Congress was an old white male, Steve Beshear, broadcast from a diner in Lexington, Kentucky. I remember it being panned for being lame and for the visual being bizarre. The Spanish response was be given by activist Astrid Silva of Nevada.
... Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont (an independent who caucuses with the Democrats in the Senate) responded to the speech in a 14-minute video posted to Facebook, in which he criticized Trump for failing to make any mention of income inequality, criminal justice reform, or climate change. Sanders also stated: "President Trump once again made it clear he plans on working with Republicans in Congress who want to repeal the Affordable Care Act, throw 20 million Americans off of health insurance, privatize Medicare, make massive cuts in Medicaid, raise the cost of prescription drugs to seniors, eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood, while at the same time, he wants to give another massive tax break to the wealthiest Americans."

According to the Democratic think-tank Center for American Progress, Trump made 51 false or manipulative statements during his speech.

Others:

Trump's State of the Union will be answered by a cacophony of resistance voices

The night before Trump speaks to Congress and the nation, an array of celebrities
a protest along Trump’s State of the Union motorcade route
Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif.
Jimmy Kimmel ... will interview porn star and alleged former Trump mistress Stormy Daniels :D
#StateOfTheDream to show their support for the young immigrants covered by DACA
A grassroots group of activists will live-stream a collection of responses to the president

Um, is this satire?

Washington Post: Names of campaign donors to be flashed during live-stream of Trump’s State of the Union speech
President Trump is seeking to parlay his first State of the Union address Tuesday into cash for his reelection campaign by offering supporters a chance to see their name flashed on the campaign's website during the speech.
[...]
As of late Tuesday afternoon, the pitch had generated $1 million in contributions...
I mean, it can't possibly be true, even in this administration. But the Post doesn't seem to be treating it as satire.

Anyone notice the awkwardly long, drawn out, applause? Does that annoy you guys as much as it does me?

Edit: Nevermind, looks like that's precisely what the above image is referencing haha.

Also, another point in the State of the Union that caught my attention: Trump made a comment about illegal aliens coming here as children and joining gangs like MS-13, making reference to one such instance where some citizens were murdered. I got the impression this was a (not so) subtle attack on DACA.

I didn't watch, but it's SOP for SOTU regardless of party. I've always hated it.

Could be, I thought it was about him applauding himself, which is odd.

With these people, there's always going to be an enemy and a potential catastrophe always the cusp of welling up.

This is why I can never support these people. I don't think constructive conservativism is a thing nowadays. It's purely reactionary against the made up narrative of a vast conspiracy of "marxists" or whatever. Modern day conservatism would wither away without an enemy. I have a feeling that they'll always have someone or something to direct their outrage towards.

It must be exhausting.

Maybe your regular Joe the plumbers might fall for whatever enemy of the day these conservatives are coming up with, but from the point of view of the congress critters themselves, they're not worked up, they're clearly (to me) just using it as a tool to work things less crazy through because they seem sane compared to the insane things they're coming up with. Who's nuclear button is the biggest anyone?!

Bring back moderate conservatives!!!! Oh wait, those are democrats now.

It makes less sense than, why does Beauregard still have his law license after lying to Congress

Will we see Muller pull a Patrick Fitzgerald. Nothing to see here, move along.

Remove Nunes from the House Intelligence Committee

Image

The petition to House Speaker Paul Ryan and House Republican leadership reads:

"The independence of Rep. Devin Nunes as chair of the House Intelligence Committee is compromised. You must immediately remove him from the Committee, and help ensure an independent and transparent investigation of all credible allegations concerning the relationship between Donald Trump and the Russian government."

I have a bunch of similar military parade photos from Moscow 30 years ago. Maybe I'll scan some in.

This week Trump declared that not clapping for him is treasonous. Really.

He should put someone in charge of ensuring that people clap. I suggest Jeb Bush.
