Can't make this (stuff) up

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

BBC: Housing Secretary Ben Carson calls poverty a 'state of mind'
US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson has sparked outrage after describing poverty as a "state of mind".
...
The interview was recorded as the White House touted its 2018 budget, which proposes cutting more than $6bn (£4.6bn) from the Housing and Urban Development department.
...
In March, he called African-American slaves "immigrants" and in 2013 he said Obamacare was the "worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery".

Hi,

Re: 11 Years Old, a Mom, and Pushed to Marry Her Rapist in Florida
https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/05/26/o ... he-us.html

This is horrifying and obscene. With NC's efforts to move away from
automatically treating teens accused of crimes as adults, we should also
stop treating 14-year-old (almost always) girls as fodder for twisted and
predatory adult men. Our girls belong in school, not forced into marriages
when they can't yet comprehend what that really means to their lives.
Please work to raise the legal marriage age in NC, especially when there's
a significant age discrepancy between partners.

I await your reply.

Sincerely,

Could have been in the fla thread if only about the poor little girl, but this seems to be more of a national problem.

Or a religion problem

Or "War on Women", or "Wingnutties out of control". Lots of disgusting overlap with something like this.

Probably to avoid jail more than bad press.

Not many people know this because it's a cryptic rule that only lawyers and cops know about, but if you call the cops on yourself for doing something illegal you automatically get off with no consequences, since the good deed of catching the perpetrator and turning them in cancels out the bad deed of committing an illegal act. Closing the loop, so to speak. This is similar to the act of Hitler being responsible for stopping and putting an end to the reign of the most heinous, evil, despicable man in human history. By putting a bullet in his head, Hitler killed Hitler. And for this we thank and remember him with graciousness.

I started to write, to take advantage of the "good guy" card, she probably should have parked somewhere other than "in the middle of 100 W Parkwood Ave." But it turns out "100 W Parkwood" is a shopping center, so she could have been parked in the lot. Cops should have just taken them home. I'm guessing, though, that the same mindset that gets a cop to shoot a 12-year old with a bb gun within less than a minute of arrival on scene probably doesn't allow for just helping the drunk girls out. So is anyone else around there now going to be willing to call the cops for help when drunk? Don't think so.

Might be better to get out of the car, lock it, then call the cops for help when drunk. Or, call a cab.

That would have been best. Apparently the cops would have dinged them for "public drunkenness" even if they'd been out of the car, based on what they did with the friend. Now I understand why the police departments no longer use the "Protect and Serve" motto on their cars.

Because the tables have been turned. They now have to protect and serve themselves.

Woman's Body Found In Walmart Bathroom 3 Days After She Went Inside

... It's a sad story that became shocking after Sand Springs Police Capt. Todd Enzbrenner revealed that video shows Caraway entering the room at about 6 p.m. Friday.

The 29-year-old never emerged, and somehow the locked bathroom was overlooked by staff.

At some point over the weekend, authorities say store employees placed a sign on the door saying it was out of order, KOKI reports.

Enzbrenner says store employees assumed that because the door was locked, something in the bathroom needed to be fixed.

While the cause of death remains undetermined, officials say it is not believed to be suspicious....
Comments:
I think being in a Walmart bathroom is probably the cause of death.
The real price for all those savings.
Walmart bathrooms normally stink and are gross.. but after three days, the employees walking by outside were thinking: "I get paid minimum wage, whatever is going on in the women's bathroom is totally not my problem.."
I wonder how many people walked past, smelled the nasty smell and said "smells like somebody died in there."
They clearly need to add a column for body removal on that cleaning checklist they post on the bathroom wall.

Seriously? Like they have people just normally go into restrooms to die in Tulsa?
Oh wait - maybe they do.

IV opiate OD is my guess, partly because she chose a lockable single occupancy family bathroom. It's not "suspicious" if the works are still sticking in her arm.

I know cops have their own jargon, but does "suspicious" only mean homicide? It can't mean suicide accidental or intentionally?

Speaking of cop jargon, I love it when the news people report that a guy was found hanging upside down on a deer stand with two shots in the head and "police believe foul play may have been involved."
