The Global Warming thread.

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

The petition to Gap, Disney and Pepsi reads:

"Your company acknowledges that climate change is a threat to the planet, yet your membership in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce helps fund an extreme, climate-denying agenda. Withdraw your membership and stop funding the Chamber of Commerce immediately."

He hasn't paid Obama the $5 million he pledged for anyone who could product Obama's birth certificate.

Seriously, why would he care what anyone thinks?

This is the admin of me first.
Pruitt probably wouldn't, but maybe there is occasionally a fight he doesn't want. Sometimes, my signature is just to call an asshole an asshole. Anyhow, this one's going to Congress, too.

Tell Trump’s EPA: I support the Clean Power Plan!

Drone Video Shows Wildfire Devastation in NorCal

I was living in Oakland during the Oakland firestorm of 1991 and watched the fire approach to within a mile of my home. I was concerned, but not too much since there was a big topography change. I sat on my roof and watched with the phone by my side in case I was called in to work. I wasn't, people either died or were okay. I think this is much worse.

Aside: I was living in San Francisco and at work during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the "World Series earthquake". Older parts of my hospital suffered significant damage, but not much to patient care areas and all that happened to my home is that a couple of knick-knacks fell over.

I was nervous for my town, a different one, in October 1993, but nothing happened.

This sucks. This administration is doing everything possible to thwart the scientific community.

Commentary from Bob Henson and Dr. Jeff Masters: The big picture

... Myers declined to affirm the anthropogenic (human-caused) foundation of recent global climate change, which has been established through exhaustive research. “I agree that I think we need a reallocation between climate and weather resources,” Myers said. “I don’t know if I can ascribe reasons as to why we have an imbalance the way we do, and so I am not interested in weighing into a maybe quasi-political debate on climate change and the causes of it.”

Similarly, AccuWeather’s position statement on global climate change (scroll down the linked page to find the statement) has steered clear of discussing the anthropogenic basis for climate change. As of October 11, 2017, the statement omitted any mention of human-produced greenhouse gases. It did not acknowledge the global-scale warming that’s been observed and is projected to increase, nor such well-established impacts as hydrologic extremes, sea ice loss, and intensified heat waves.

We agree wholeheartedly with Myers on the importance of shared weather data, world-leading models, and unparalleled severe weather warnings. There is room for improvement in all of these high-priority areas, and Myers could do much to advance them. We believe there are additional priorities as well—most crucially, understanding human-driven changes to our atmosphere and informing society about them. NOAA plays a unique and vital role in this profound endeavor, and if Myers is to lead the agency, it behooves him to convince us, and the U.S. Senate, that he will fight to defend that role. As former AMS president Marshall Shepherd (University of Georgia) said in a May interview, “The head of NOAA has to be a voice for climate change and climate science in an era where it feels like it is under attack.”

"Jane Lubchenco’s long tenure as a biology professor proved helpful in ways she might not have expected during her four years as the head of the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.

The returning member of the Oregon State University faculty told Think Out Loud host David Miller Thursday how she found herself teaching a member of Congress where TV weather forecasters get their weather forecasts."

“He was absolutely serious,” she continued. “I thought, ‘Uh, oh."
"Whenever injustices have been remedied, wars halted, women and Blacks and Native Americans given their due, it has been because “unimportant” people spoke up, organized, protested, and brought democracy alive." H. Zinn

Last month, we squared off against the World Bank – a massive public institution that provides BILLIONS of dollars in fossil fuel finance each year. Thanks to the messages you sent to the World Bank’s President, we won an important victory!

World Bank President Jim Yong Kim publicly announced plans to track and report greenhouse gas emissions for all World Bank projects.

This step, though small, unlocks a key tool in our work to hold the World Bank accountable for its fossil fuel projects, and will increase pressure on the Bank to deliver more support for clean energy.

The climate movement has been demanding that the World Bank report its emissions for over a decade. They finally made this public commitment thanks to your emails and advocacy. Reporting emissions, however, is only a first step to reducing them. Now we’re working out what comes next, and we want to be sure you’re included....
