The Global Warming thread.

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

You'd think "Breitbart article" would be enough to make the point. At least to a sensible person.

President Obama: Step up for climate justice -- before the climate denier takes office!

Donald Trump plans to do everything he can to reverse progress on climate change. His policies threaten disaster for people and the planet.

But there’s one thing President Obama can do before he leaves office that Trump cannot undo.

The U.S. has promised to pay $3 billion into a fund that will help people in Global South countries dealing with climate change disasters right now. If Obama releases the remaining $2.5 billion of that money before he leaves office, it will have a huge impact on the lives of billions of people around the world -- and Trump won’t be able to touch it.

Donald Trump has made clear he plans to end funding for climate progress. But Obama can release the money the U.S. has pledged right now -- and send a strong message to the rest of the world that progress on climate change must continue, no matter who is in the White House.

Add your name to tell Obama: Money is a critical component of securing global climate justice. Make good on your pledge before the climate denier takes the White House!

2016 marks three consecutive years of record warmth for the globe

With a boost from El Nino, 2016 began with a bang. For eight consecutive months, January to August, the globe experienced record warm heat. With this as a catalyst, the 2016 globally averaged surface temperature ended as the highest since record keeping began in 1880, according to scientists from NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).

The average temperature across global land and ocean surfaces in 2016 was 58.69 degrees F or 1.69 degrees F above the 20th century average. This surpassed last year’s record by 0.07 degrees F. Since the start of the 21st century, the annual global temperature record has been broken five times (2005, 2010, 2014, 2015, and 2016).

Despite the cooling influence of a weak La Nina in the latter part of the year, the year ended with the third warmest December on record for the globe, with an average temperature 1.42 degrees F above the 20th century average.

In a separate analysis of global temperature data released at the same time, scientists from NASA also found 2016 to be the warmest year on record.

More noteworthy findings from 2016:

The globally averaged sea surface temperature was the highest on record, 1.35 degree F above average.

The globally averaged land surface temperature was the highest on record, 2.57 degrees F above average.

North America had its warmest year on record; South America and Africa had their second; Asia and Europe had their third; and Australia had its fifth.

The average Arctic sea ice extent for the year was 3.92 million square miles, the smallest annual average since record-keeping began in 1979.

The average Antarctic sea ice extent for the year was 4.31 million square miles, the second smallest annual average since record-keeping began in 1979.

Something is very, very wrong with the Arctic climate

This Arctic winter has startled even the most even-keeled scientists, with records set for low sea ice extent, high temperatures and other indicators of a climate gone awry....

This comes on the heels of a year in which sea ice extent hit its second-lowest level on record at the end of the summer melt season in September....

Image
Animation of global temperatures including the record warm year of 2016.

This is 100,000 square miles, or slightly larger than the state of Oregon, below the previous lowest January extent in January 2016.

To put it in a longer-term perspective, sea ice extent during January was 487,000 square miles below the January 1981 to 2010 long-term average. This means the Arctic was missing an area of sea ice about the size of South Africa. Keep in mind that this is the middle of winter, when much of the high Arctic is still shrouded in darkness....

I'm sure the alternative facts from Koch-funded " climate scientists" show something different. NO worries- God has it all under control!

Was 78 here on Sunday, beating the previous record for the date by 5 degrees. Greenville, SC was 81, also a record . . . for any day in February ever. We've had just one snowfall and essentially only a week of winter.

It's the far right that keeps claiming that "the government will kill us off." That includes the "chemtrails" conspiracy fantasies.

The claim is one of the *less* paranoid claims coming out of the firehose of wingnuttery called InfoWars. From 9/11 conspiracies to moon landing hoaxes to "North American Union" warnings to claims that the Newtown Massacre - and every other crisis - was a "false flag" operation, nothing is to too insane and stupid for Alex Jones's InfoWars.

Nor for Donald Trump, who appears on their show, tweets links to them and endorses them.
"It is surreal to talk about issues here on air, and then word-for-word hear Trump say it," Alex Jones confessed.

What do 80-degree days in February say about Charlotte’s climate?

... It’s been balmy: The average temperature in Charlotte in January was 7.5 degrees warmer than normal, and 16 straight days were above freezing. Charlotte has already had nine days at or above 70 degrees this year, all at least 15 degrees above normal, including a record 80 on Sunday.

And it’s getting warmer: Annual average temperatures in the Southeast have increased by about 2 degrees since 1970. Extreme winter warmth in the region has been more common than extreme cold over the past decade.

Here’s why, scientists say: Researchers can now calculate the probability of whether climate change influenced past weather events. They found evidence, for instance, that man-made climate change was largely responsible for the globally warm 2015, the hottest on record until 2016 surpassed it. It's too early to say how much this winter's weather has been influenced by climate change.

... What to expect: Warmer than normal weather in the Carolinas through February.
Feb. forecast:

I see my little corner of the world down toward the end of Florida is marked white for "normal." Nice to know, even if the beaches are getting smaller. But for most of January and February, temps have been consistently above normal, if only by maybe 5 degrees instead of 15, but still.

Plus, one has to know "normal" compared to what. I don't know about the above map but when we hear above or below normal on the TV news it's usually relative to the 10 year average, an average that's already well above "normal" compared to 25, 50 or 100 years ago.
