The Global Warming thread.

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Climate Threatens Far-Flung US Military Bases

Contradicting the Trump administration’s bogus denial that climate change is underway, the Pentagon reported in late January that extreme weather events brought on by rising global temperatures is affecting half of the 3,500 US military sites around the world with floods, droughts, and wildfires. It found that almost 800 US bases were affected by drought, 350 by extreme heat, 225 by flooding during storm surges, and over 200 by wildfires....

Summer Nights Are Getting Hotter. Here's Why That’s a Health and Wildfire Risk.
Higher nighttime temperatures as the climate changes can leave homes and humans little chance to cool off. It’s affecting agriculture and wildfire activity, too.

Well after dinner time in Southern California on Friday, the thermometers read 100 degrees. In Santa Barbara County, fires lit up the skies and destroyed homes.

At breakfast time on Saturday in San Bernardino County, the temperature was "ridiculously above 100 degrees," as the National Weather Service put it. People fled blazes there, too.

Not only is it unusually hot all over the world, to a remarkable degree, the heat lingers overnight. With a changing climate, overnight low temperatures are going up even faster than daytime highs. The diurnal anomaly, as scientists call it, is posing big risks to public health, safety, ecosystems and agriculture.

Just last month, a city in Oman went well over 24 hours without the temperature ever dropping below 108 degrees. That was the highest daily minimum temperature ever recorded anywhere on the planet—a new milestone of global warming....

Wildfires rage in Arctic Circle as Sweden calls for help
Sweden worst hit as hot, dry summer sparks unusual number of fires, with at least 11 in the far north

... The Copernicus Earth observation programme, which gives daily updates of fires in Europe, shows more than 60 fires burning across Sweden, with sites also ablaze in Norway, Finland and Russia, including in the Arctic Circle....

“This is definitely the worst year in recent times for forest fires. Whilst we get them every year, 2018 is shaping up to be excessive,” said Mike Peacock, a university researcher and local resident.

There have been huge fires in the past in Sweden, but not over such a wide area. This appears to be a trend as more and bigger blazes are reported in other far northern regions like Greenland, Alaska, Siberia and Canada.

The sparks come from a variety of sources: BBQs, cigarettes and increasingly lightning, which is becoming more frequent as the planet warms.

Swedish authorities say the risk of more fires in the days ahead is “extremely high” due to temperatures forecast in excess of 30C. Much of the northern hemisphere has sweltered in unusually hot weather in recent weeks, breaking records from Algeria to California and causing fires from Siberia to Yorkshire. Ukraine has been hit especially hard by wildfires....

EU officials said many of this year’s fires are outside the traditional European fire zone of the Mediterranean, and are increasingly taking place at unexpected times of year. 2017 was the worst fire year in Europe’s history, causing destruction to thousands of hectares of forest and cropland in Portugal, Spain and Italy, as late as November. “There are clear trends of longer fire seasons and frequent critical periods in Europe that are leading to dangerous fire situations,” said a European commission official.

Climate scientists said the Arctic and other areas that were once relatively fire-free are likely to become more vulnerable.

“What we’re seeing with this global heatwave is that these areas of fire susceptibility are now broadening, with the moors in north-west England and now these Swedish fires a consequence of that,” said Vincent Gauci, professor of global change ecology at the Open University.

“Both these areas are typically mild and wet which allows forests and peatlands to develop quite large carbon stores,” he added. “When such carbon-dense ecosystems experience aridity and heat and there is a source of ignition – lightning or people – fires will happen.”

US interior secretary's school friend blocking climate research, scientists say
Trump administration forces some scientific funding to be reviewed by adviser who was high-school football teammate of Ryan Zinke

... The US interior department administers over $5.5bn in funding to external organizations, mostly for research, conservation and land acquisition. At the beginning of 2018, interior secretary Ryan Zinke instated a new requirement that scientific funding above $50,000 must undergo an additional review to ensure expenditures “better align with the administration’s priorities”.

Zinke has signaled that climate change is not one of those priorities: this week, he told Breitbart News that “environmental terrorist groups” were responsible for the ongoing wildfires in northern California and, ignoring scientific research on the issue, dismissed the role of climate change.

Steve Howke, one of Zinke’s high-school football teammates, oversees this review. Howke’s highest degree is a bachelor’s in business administration. Until Zinke appointed him as an interior department senior adviser to the acting assistant secretary of policy, management and budget, Howke had spent his entire career working in credit unions....

It's not as though scientists disagree with them.

(Assuming of course, that they ban scientists from disagreeing with them on climate change like they did for sea level rise.)

It's a wonder they don't solve the problem of coal ash pollution in rivers by simply denying that it exists.

Wait.... Have they?

You may remember when a new law in North Carolina banned scientific predictions of sea-level rise. There were similar bans in Florida and Texas.

And now, largely to improve the chances of passing a bill approving the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline:

House Republicans just passed a bill forbidding scientists from advising the EPA on their own research

Well, that solves THAT problem.
I know we discussed NC's stupidity, but these are the earliest references I found. I think the Leg. must have acted in 2012 before this forum was started in 9/2012 or this topic was started in 11/2012. I'm glad that HuffPost remembers.
6 Years Ago, North Carolina Chose To Ignore Rising Sea Levels. This Week It Braces For Disaster.

... McElraft introduced the bill in April 2011, and it passed the legislature in the summer of 2012....
I also found this:

2012:

New Law in North Carolina Bans Latest Scientific Predictions of Sea-Level Rise

That's apparently changed:

NC DEQ: Sea Level Rise

I'm not sure if the change was this year under our new Dem Gov. or if the stupidity was erased longer ago.
HuffPost doesn't mention the policy change.

"A damning new U.N. report revealed that we could suffer some of the most severe effects of climate change very soon — unless we accelerate phasing out fossil fuels, drastically reducing our carbon emissions, and transitioning to cleaner, smarter energy right now."

Your link cites heat rise. I believe the Bible says the Earth will be destroyed by fire. Well, I'll be damned!

We all are concerned with changes in the Earth's climate, but I wonder where the ingredients for the mechanisms needed to produce "cleaner, smarter energy" will come from; and how will they be obtained? Everything on this Earth comes from the Earth. Let that sink in a moment...

We already have most of the tech we need, but fossil fuels and nukes get massive direct and indirect subsidies.

"fire" is pretty goddamned vague, could cover anything from actual fires to warfare, red giant sun and a meteor strike. AGW being "fire" is a stretch compared to these.

What we need and what's available is two different things. Perhaps you'd rather do without heat or electricity?

Let's look at ONE example of the machinery needed to produce alternative sources of heat and electricity; "machinery" being the magic word:
What type of fuel will it take to heat the iron ore to a temperature high enough to melt it down making it capable of being poured into a mold to form machine parts? (take all the time you need) Also this, (just for shitz & giggles): the machines needed to dig out the iron ore aren't made of plastic (oops, that a fossil fuel by-product!)

  "The Earth will be destroyed by fire" -- That's about as "pretty goddamned vague" as you can get, huh? Using your examples, ya ever hear of 'spontaneous combustion'? (Spontaneous combustion or spontaneous ignition is a type of combustion which occurs by self-heating (increase in temperature due to exothermic internal reactions), followed by thermal runaway (self heating which rapidly accelerates to high temperatures) and finally, auto-ignition.) Hope this helps. Your welcome, OK.
