Gun Legislation

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I'm shocked.
Everyone knows that a person who owns a car is less likely to drive it in traveling, and that a person carrying around a fifth is less likely to be a drinker, and a person with a passport and a pile of cash is less likely to be a flight risk. Why wouldn't the same logic work for guns?

Jan. 22: NET Charter High School in New Orleans, Louisiana
An unidentified person pulled up in a truck and shot into a group of students standing outside the school during lunch time. One teenager was sent to the hospital with a superficial injury.

Jan. 20: Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina
A North Carolina football player from Winston-Salem State University was shot to death while at an event at Wake Forest University.

Jan. 15: Wiley College in Marshall, Texas
Police believe two suspects in a car exchanged gunfire with a person in a dormitory parking lot. No injuries were reported, but a bullet entered a dorm room during the incident.

Jan. 10: Grayson College in Denison, Texas
A criminal justice student fired a bullet through a wall after mistaking the firearm for training gun. No one was injured.

I would like to think that if the Dems get Congressional majorities and a President, they'll grow some backbone and pass some fundamental improvements, but I find that increasingly unlikely as practically no one is making an issue of gun laws anymore. Everytime a politician brings it up in any manner, they're just shouted down or ridiculed sufficiently by the NRA-fundies to the point that it appears trivial to the public - even if that same public actually supports the idea. I've given up on any legislative solution, and think the only solution will be social/cultural, like what happened to tobacco. Legal restrictions helped, but mostly it was the idea of smoking becoming socially unacceptable and smokers banished to alleys that cut the percentage of adult smokers down from around 50% to just over 10%. Same with the old "2 martini lunch." It's still legal to have a beer or wine at lunch during the business day, but when was the last time you saw anybody actually doing it? Or drunk driving - sure, it's illegal, and they cut down the level for "DWI" down to .8 from .10, but it was social change that made the difference. Remember hearing Sinatra "So, make it one for my baby and one more for the road"? Heard any new songs with references to heading out onto the road at 3 in the morning after closing the bar?

I'm offering my "thoughts and prayers" for stronger gun laws, but I recognize that with the constant tragedies it will always be "too soon for politics". :(

Last night, Trump spoke for eighty minutes. Zero of them were dedicated to gun violence prevention. Despite the tens of thousands of Americans who died from gun violence during his first year in office, Trump's first State of the Union made it clear that gun violence prevention is not a priority -- or even a consideration -- for his administration.

At the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV), we know 38,000 gun-related deaths in a single year is unacceptable. We know gun violence is an area which requires attention....

MYTH: Promoting gun violence prevention a purely political maneuver by congressional Democrats to take away everyone's guns.
FACT: Congressional Democrats don’t know how to devise political maneuvers.

Kimmel Writer Calls Out GOP In Blistering Replies To 'Prayers' After Florida Shooting

Lawmakers sending “thoughts and prayers” in the wake of Wednesday’s deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida, are getting slammed for their financial ties to the gun lobby.

Bess Kalb, a writer for “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” is responding to each lawmaker tweeting condolences over the murders by listing how much they’ve taken from the National Rifle Association, which has consistently fought any move to tighten gun control laws.

Here are some of those tweets and Kalb’s replies:

Idk, but I'm guessing that it was just a glitch given that she re-posted his pic and the article that lists him as #1. It would be really dumb to do it for some McCain-protecting reason while also posting the McCain condemnation.

Maybe she felt bad pointing at him because of his cancer, but wasn't he the one who explained his recent vote by saying, why should other people have insurance, look at me, I've good the best health care in the world and it can't save me.

Florida school shooting: Many dead, many more injured.

Whenever a tragedy befalls our country, I like to take a stroll to certain segments of the web to gain some insights into how others assess the situation before additional information has been revealed.

First reaction: He's a Democrat! He's a member of antifa! A DACA recipient! Etc. Despite most if not all of these not being case at all.

Anyway, what I'm getting at is it's very telling when someone's very first reaction is to scour the web for "proof" that's only found on very obviously fake websites, immediately taking this info as fact because it confirms what someone wants to be real.

I reckon we're pretty screwed.
You aren't doing it wrong if no one knows what you are doing.
