Gun Legislation

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

... Dennis Alexander was teaching a course about gun safety for his Administration of Justice class when his gun went off at 1:20 p.m.

Alexander was pointing his gun at the ceiling when it fired. Pieces of the ceiling fell to the ground.

A news release from the Seaside Police Department said no one suffered "serious injuries." One 17-year-old boy suffered moderate injuries when fragments from the bullet ricocheted off the ceiling and lodged into his neck, the student's father, Fermin Gonzales, told KSBW.

The teacher had just told the class that he wanted to make sure his gun wasn't loaded, when the gun fired ...

But no one at the school checked to make sure that all of the students were uninjured, Gonzales said. The school day resumed as normal, and Seaside Police Department officers launched an investigation.

The 17-year-old boy's parents were shocked when he returned home with blood on his shirt and bullet fragments in his neck. The student's parents rushed him to a hospital for X-rays.

"He's shaken up, but he's going to be OK," Gonzales told KSBW. "I'm just pretty upset that no one told us anything and we had to call the police ourselves to report it." ...
I count at least 6 distinct screw ups.

How teens organizing March for Our Lives are helping each other find housing

Nearly 300 students who will be among the thousands traveling to Washington, D.C., this weekend to rally for gun control do not have to worry about finding a hotel room in the nation’s capital thanks to a group of teenagers.

Students from Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, Maryland, have organized a home-share network that has placed hundreds of students in the homes of their classmates’ families for free....

I'm WaPo restricted, and I can't make it go away by clearing cookies. I'm pretty sure this is the same thing:

This school district’s plan to stop shooters: Arming students with a bucket of rocks

It's sad that schools have to discuss such things, but it's not as crazy as it sounds. A bucket of rocks in the closet is unlikely to increase the danger to students and staff the way an armed teacher does. Every active shooter training has 3 components:

Run, if you can.
Hide, if you can't run, including barricading.
Fight, if you have to, using whatever tools are available. I've heard books and cans of food mentioned as throw-able weapons. A classroom full of rock throwing students would be pretty formidable for a shooter.

Here's a short video. At about 3:50 they start discussing the Fight option.

Tell Congress: Stop taking the NRA’s money

The petition to Congress reads:

“The NRA is a dangerous extremist group. Its ‘guns everywhere’ agenda threatens public safety and makes it almost impossible to pass gun control legislation at the federal or state levels. No elected official should take its money.”

SPLC:
... The Washington Post released a powerful report this week finding that, since Columbine, more than 187,000 students have been on campuses during a shooting at their school. The majority are children of color.

Black students are three times as likely — and Hispanic students, nearly twice as likely — as white students to experience gun violence at school.

They are also more likely to attend a school with on-campus police. That does not make them safer.

School resource officers were present during four of the five worst school shootings. The shootings happened anyway. Only one time before this month had a school resource officer ever gunned down an active shooter.

But if on-campus police rarely deter school shootings, they do reinforce the school-to-prison pipeline — the same pipeline that excludes black children across the country from school at three times the rate of their white peers, despite research showing that children of all races misbehave at similar rates....

The NRA response to the Parkland Massacre: They went silent for four days. Then they came back with a vengeance, with quadruple the ad budget.

Chicago Tribune: New data show the NRA increased online ad spending aggressively after Parkland shooting
The NRA didn’t change its message after the Parkland shooting, the message was just pushed much harder.
At least this answers one question: When they say "Now is not the time to talk about this", they believe that four days later is the proper time.

And they've taken notice of all the young people protesting guns! The article documents how NRA is advertising to kids on YouTube toy video channels and elsewhere.

Really? They couldn't include one black kid? The Parkland kids have been going out of their way to do so and to call out media racism. I've expressed my disappointment to Time.

CBC: Bushmaster AR-15 gun maker Remington files for bankruptcy
...after years of falling sales and lawsuits tied to the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.
Oh, BS. Remington was killed by a classic case of leveraged buy-out and asset stripping by vulture capitalists. From this thread in 2014:

Reality check:

Successful and money-making companies often go under regardless. They get bought out by some hedge fund, which then puts them deep in debt to pay their investors a dividend. They sell off the company's properties for a quick profit, leaving it in more debt for rent. And then they walk away.

This is what's happening with Red Lobster and Olive Garden:
Starboard Value previously pulled the stunt with Red Lobster, selling the real-estate out from under 500 restaurants to a "real estate investment trust," freeing $1.5B for dividends to investors like Starboard, leaving Red Lobster limping along paying rent in the locations it had previously owned, profits cut in half -- after Starboard had milked it for its giant, one-time payout.

This is a common hedge-fund scam: it's what killed Mervyn's, costing 30,000 jobs after the business's hedge-fund owner sold the stores' property out from under it, breaking the business's back on rent payments for property that it had once owned (the hedge fund cleaned up from the real-estate sale).
As your New York Post story says, Remington was bought by Cerberus Capital Management a few years ago. Cerberus gets a mention in the Rolling Stone's Greed and Debt: The True Story of Mitt Romney and Bain Capital:

[...]

Cerberus bought Remington Arms for $370 million - a price which include $252 million in assumed debt. As your New York Post story says, when someone wanted to buy the company off Cerberus, "Remington passed and ended up borrowing more money to pay investors a dividend, raising its debt load to more than $1 billion." Now it's likely unsellable.

It's only a matter of time until you hear about lib'ruls, gun control and Obama being responsible for the company's demise.
I was wrong about the timing. But no doubt they'll still blame lib'ruls.

Here's another article:

U.S. gunmaker Remington files for bankruptcy

It discusses what you do, but also says, "Remington's sales fell significantly in the year before its bankruptcy".

In part, it was the lib'ruls and Obama's fault. Hillary was nominated, POSPOTUS won, Obama left - bad for gun sales to terrified pansy ammosexuals.

Other problems with the narrative:
The “good guy with a gun” meme generally applies to civilians, not cops.
Cops are different from the teachers and staff that some want to arm.
SROs are a fact of life now, there just isn't that much active opposition to them.
The shooter had several minutes and many other potential targets, but he only shot the girl. This is highly suggestive that there never were going to be other victims.
