Immigration

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

That is a brilliant correction of the metaphor, billy.pilgrim.
heard it from my grandfather, as he splashed the scum from the milk bucket onto a flat rock for the barn cats, some 40 or so years ago

he never forgave the republicons for the Depression. Unlike then, this time the dems bailed the banks out. Although I would have hated the consequences of another Depression, I can't see how it would have been worse than trump and not being able to hold them accountable for destroying the economy.

those who say that the cream rises to the top never milked. sitting right on top before the cream even begins to separate is a layer of scum that farmers scrape off and throw to the barn cats. in the marines - they promote it
Have you seen the Tom Hanks movie Charlie Wilson's War?

It also stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as CIA operative Gust Avrakotos, masterminding the support of the Afghan mujahideen during the Soviet–Afghan War.

One thing that was inaccurate about the film: A scene at the end with Wilson and Avrakotos celebrating the end of the war. In reality Avrakotos was forced out by then. For calling Oliver North and Bud McFarlane (both Marine Lieutenant Colonels who went into White House politics) a "lunatic fringe" whose Iran arms-for-hostages plan a "was a disaster in the making."

I never watched it. figured it to be more bs that would miss the point that it was us teaching and sponsoring terrorism against the soviets that lead directly to 9.11 and pretty much all that has happened in the ME since

Isn't pretty much everything we did in Afghanistan terrorism?

I did almost watch because Hanks is in it. Am I wrong?

It's worth watching. Especially for Avrakotos's brutal honesty.

The lesson was a bit different: Once the Russians pulled out, Wilson and Avrakotos were unable to stop the US government from abandoning the Afghans. (There was an interesting mention of how there was only a tiny percentage of the male population still alive over the age of 14. And with little chance of getting an education.) "These things happened. They were glorious and they changed the world... and then we fucked up the endgame."

Some quotes:

Gust Avrakotos: Until the phone rang this morning Charlie, I did not know I never heard of you.
Charlie Wilson: Well, ask around.
Gust Avrakotos: I did.
Charlie Wilson: What'd you find out?
Gust Avrakotos: That your greatest legislative achievement in six terms, is getting reelected five times.
Charlie Wilson: Anything else?
Gust Avrakotos: That you hold more IOU's than any member of the House.

---
Joanne Herring: Why is Congress saying one thing and doing nothing?
Charlie Wilson: Well, tradition mostly.

---
Charlie Wilson: You're no James Bond.
Gust Avrakotos: You're no Thomas Jefferson, either. Let's call it even.

---
Charlie Wilson: You know you've reached rock bottom when you're told you have character flaws by a man who hanged his predecessor in a military coup.

---
Joanne Herring: May I ask what it is that I've done to make you dislike me, Mr. Avrakotos?
Gust Avrakotos: I like you just fine, Mrs. Herring, it's just been my experience that when people with money and too much free time get involved in politics, pretty soon, I forget who it is I'm supposed to be shooting at.

---
Zvi (Israeli intelligence agent, whom Avrakotos is trying to convince to cooperate with Saudi Arabia): ...everyone who has ever tried to kill me or my family has been trained in Saudi Arabia!
Gust Avrakotos: That's not true, Zvi. Some of them were trained by us.
(Zvi's eyes bug out)

---
Charlie's Angel #4: The Washington Post wants to know what you thought of your time in rehab.
Charlie Wilson: And what did you tell them?
Charlie's Angel #4: That the Congressman didn't go to rehab because they don't serve whiskey there.

---
Charlie Wilson: What's the gift for?
Gust Avrakotos: It's from the Afghan desk for doubling the budget for the Mujahadeen.
Charlie Wilson: Well, thank you.
Gust Avrakotos: It was nothing.
Charlie Wilson: It's a nice bottle of scotch. Must have been hard to get.
Gust Avrakotos: No, doubling the budget was nothing. Ten million dollars for covert ops against the Russian army is meaningless. What are you, an infant?

---
Charlie Wilson: First off, I'd appreciate it if you didn't throw my name around quite so much, because from time to time I use it myself, and I need it in good condition.

---
Charlie Wilson: I stood in Harold Holt's office in Islamabad, and I offered him the keys to the safe. I said to him, "What do you need?" And I was apparently annoying him.
Gust Avrakotos: Well, that's because Harold Holt is a tool. He's a cake-eater, he's a clown, he's a bad station chief, and I don't like to cast aspersions on a guy, but he's going to get us all killed.

---
Charlie Wilson: This thing is going to get done by the CIA and it's going to get done quietly.
President Zia: You have authority to do this?
Charlie Wilson: [shrugging] None what so ever.

---
President Zia: Do you have the authority to do this?
Charlie Wilson: No, I'm actually in danger of breaking the Logan Act.
President Zia: ...I don't know what that is.

---
Gust Avrakotos: As long as the press sees sex and drugs behind the left hand, you can park a battle carrier behind the right hand and no one's gonna fucking notice.

10-Year-Old Immigrant Is Detained After Agents Stop Her on Way to Surgery

... Border Patrol agents stopped the ambulance she was riding in, her family said. The agents allowed her to continue to Driscoll Children’s Hospital, the family said, but followed the ambulance the rest of the way there, then waited outside her room until she was released from the hospital.

By Wednesday evening, according to family members and advocates involved in her case, immigration agents had taken her to a facility in San Antonio where migrant children who arrive alone in the United States from Central America are usually held, even though her parents, who both lack legal status, live 150 miles away in Laredo.

... it is rare, if not unheard-of, for a child already living in the United States to be arrested — particularly one with a serious medical condition.

... The entire time Rosamaria was in surgery and then in recovery, several armed Border Patrol agents stood outside her hospital room, the family said....

Rosamaria’s doctors have recommended that she be released to a relative because of her illness ...

Representative Henry Cuellar, a Democrat who represents the Laredo area in Congress, called on Wednesday for the girl to be released back to her family.

“I understand that C.B.P. has a tremendous duty to protect our nation,” he said in a statement, referring to Customs and Border Protection, “but we should be devoting our resources and focus on bigger threats.”

... “The fact that they spent so much time and resources to follow this girl, to treat her like she was the highest-priority criminal that ever walked on this earth — the way they’re treating her is just beyond what a 10-year-old special needs child should be treated,” said Priscila Martinez, an immigration activist at the Workers Defense Action Fund, which is helping to plan rallies for Rosamaria in Laredo and Corpus Christi....
Had I been there I might just have gotten myself arrested and fired trying to prevent her discharge to anyone other than her family.

But then, there is this

https://www.truthdig.com/articles/new-y ... ghanistan/

"In the spring of 1983, we had invited Roger Fisher, director of the Harvard Negotiation Project, to return with us to Kabul to unwrap the riddle of why the United Nations negotiations were getting nowhere. Contracted to ABC’s “Nightline,” Fisher met with the Kremlin’s chief Afghan specialist, who had flown down from Moscow and told him point blank, “We want to get out. Give us six months to save face, and we’ll leave the Afghans to solve their own problems.” Upon his return, Fisher expected his discovery would be greeted with relief. Instead he found that “negotiated settlement” was only a fig leaf for escalating the war. The mainstream media were just beginning to ramp up a propaganda campaign, which would become known as Charlie Wilson’s War, to drive support for keeping the Soviets pinned down in their own Vietnam while bleeding Wali’s Afghanistan to death."

Fighting a Co-Worker's Deportation at Our Hospital

When our hospital bargaining team learned that our co-worker Maria Mendoza Sanchez and her family were to be deported in less than a week, we were shocked. Though we knew it might be too late to act, we decided we had to do something.

In the end we weren’t able to stop Mendoza Sanchez’s deportation. But through collective action we were able to soften the blow, negotiating an agreement that allows union members to donate their own vacation time to support Mendoza Sanchez and her family after her own leave time runs out. And we learned how quickly we could mobilize wide support in a case like this.

Until her deportation in August, Mendoza Sanchez was a nurse in the telemetry/oncology unit at Highland Hospital in Oakland, California. Highland is a typical public hospital—a place where people can go for care if they don’t have insurance, a last resort in a health care system designed to generate profit....
I worked at Highland and was an SEIU member there. I'm proud to read about both in this context.

Paul Ryan says American women need to have more babies
"I did my part, but we need to have higher birth rates in this country," said the father of three.

During a news conference on Thursday, House Speaker Paul Ryan urged American women to have more babies, saying their lack of procreation was stunting economic growth....

While it is true that birth rates in the U.S. have been declining, that’s not necessarily bad news — for instance, birth rates for teenagers hit a record low last year. Ryan’s comments also overlook the possibility that people may not share his belief that economic growth is a goal to be pursued at any and all costs.

Furthermore, there’s an obvious solution to the problem that Ryan completely ignores — allowing more immigrants into the country to fill the jobs being vacated by retiring baby boomers. But instead of using his position as House Speaker to pursue immigration reform, Ryan has instead indicated he’s on board with Trump’s hardline anti-immigration positions, including the president’s insistence on spending billions of dollars on a border wall....
Dems take heat over failure to secure DACA fix this year

Democratic leaders in Congress are facing criticism from progressive groups for failing to secure legislative protections for young immigrants brought to the country illegally in the year-end stopgap spending bill.

Left-leaning groups like Credo Mobile and Democracy For America (DFA) laid blame squarely at the feet of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) after a short-term spending bill passed the House and Senate on Thursday without the protections.

“This is a monumental failure of leadership on the part of Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi,” Credo political director Murshed Zaheed said in a statement hammering party leaders over the issue and also noting children's health insurance.

“For months, Democratic leaders insisted they would use their leverage in year-end spending bill negotiations to protect Dreamers and reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program, but at the end of the day they let us down and refused to even put up a fight." ...

News flash - 30 minutes ago

Crazy trumpette woman 2 doors down started a fire while smoking in the garage under her on piling house. When running up stairs for a phone, she tripped, fell and was knocked unconscious.

Thanks to the illegal immigrant concrete workers across the street who made the decision to be blocked in our little cul-de-sac by fire trucks and ambulances and to face all manner of authorities after rescuing the woman, her children and her pets.

Bet she will continue to support trump to build the wall.
