Deploying troops to defend against a “caravan” of migrants was an election stunt all along. Now we know just how much America paid for it.

Trump’s deployment of more than 5,000 American troops to the southern border – a mission that cannot in good conscience be called quixotic only because at least Don Quixote actually believed the windmills at which he was tilting were real monsters – will cost American taxpayers at least $72 million, the Pentagon said on Tuesday.

I never knew that "quixotic" came from Don Quixote.

The real number is higher still, because it includes Trump’s activation earlier in the year of the National Guard to the border, which cost a further $138 million. That means that it is now possible to put a price-tag on one of the most bare-faced and cynical election stunts in American history: $210 million.

Trump only talked about the so-called “migrant caravan” – which he framed as an invading army, playing to the fears of White Nationalists by describing them almost lasciviously as “young strong men” many of whom could be “Middle Eastern” – in order to activate his base in border states such as Texas.

Thanks, POSPOTUS and other bigots.

The so-called caravan is an annual event, and is actually a group of asylum-seekers from parts of Central America whose lives are threatened and who are traveling together for reasons of safety. The ultimate irony, of course, is that the violence from which many of them are fleeing is the result of decades of American foreign policy, especially the drug war, which has turned much of the region over to the control of powerful drug cartels....

When @hoarsewisperer and I started this campaign, neither of us ever expected it to take off the way it did. We are truly humbled by the outpouring of humanity from folks across the country (and the world) for refugees and immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border.

We still think the wall is a ridiculous idea borne out of the tragic fear inherent in white supremacy, and we all must do what we can to demand the United States be a society that doesn't turn away any human being fleeing violence and persecution.

An Alabama sheriff personally kept $1.5 million that was supposed to feed ICE detainees

Sheriff Todd Entrekin of Etowah County, Alabama, lost his re-election bid this year after he was found to have personally pocketed $750,000 allotted for feeding inmates in county lockup and using it to buy himself a beach house. Ethical questions aside, Entrekin's taking was legal under Alabama law

— but a further $1.5 million he took home from funds for feeding federal immigration detainees may not be....

"There's pretty much no way that the federal government is okay with this," George Washington University law professor Randall Eliason told AL.com. "Regardless of what he argues about the Alabama law, if it comes to light that he's taking these federal funds that are supposed to be used to feed and house federal prisoners, and instead is putting [hundreds of thousands of] dollars in his pocket, that would be of great interest to federal prosecutors." ...
