Greetings to all from the "immigrants" O Really into Canada, eh? It's a beautiful night in Montreal, except that on the local news we couldn't avoid some Trump coverage. And little Ford. Maybe tomorrow we'll watch the french channels.

did you go over or under their wall?
I knew the days were long gone where you cruised by, wave a drivers' license and off you go. And they've changed some rules since the last time we crossed the border in a motorcoach, but even then they came into the coach and took a somewhat cursory look in the fridge and food storage. So we were prepared to spend a bit of time getting through. Preparation helps - gave them our papers, and an itemized list of food on board, told them we had no firearms, and got waved straight through. Probably have more trouble getting back in than we did leaving. No chance regularly summering around here, though. I love Ottawa and Toronto, but Montreal not so much.

I may be wrong, but I don't think I've ever had more trouble getting into a country than I have getting back into the US. And it's not like I'm on a 'watch list or anything . . . although maybe I should be.

Why Is Bank of America Asking Clients About Their Citizenship?
Lenders discriminate against immigrants—and often, it’s perfectly legal.
Image

Why is Bank of America forcing customers to verify their citizenship status?

Proof of citizenship is not required to open an account or conduct business with a bank in the United States. But that hasn't stopped Bank of America from penalizing customers who refuse to confirm whether they are U.S. citizens. That is unacceptable.

History will remember which banks stood by immigrants and which ones helped Donald Trump attack them. Speak out now to demand that Bank of America does the right thing and stops forcing customers to reveal their immigration status....

Bank of America was founded in San Francisco in 1904 as the Bank of Italy to serve the needs of many immigrants settling in the United States. Speak out now to demand that the bank honor its history, protect immigrants' civil rights and stop collecting information about the citizenship status of its customers.

Tell Bank of America: Stop asking customers about their citizenship status.

The petition to Bank of America reads:

"Honor your history. Protect immigrants' civil rights and stop asking customers about their citizenship status."

Court allows claims to move forward against private prison company that profits from forced labor of detained immigrants

A federal court has ruled that a private prison company can be held liable for forcing detained immigrants to work for as little as $1 a day to clean, cook, and maintain an immigration prison it operates in Georgia.

The ruling follows a class action lawsuit the SPLC filed in April against CoreCivic, Inc., which runs the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia. CoreCivic is under contract with Stewart County, Georgia, to house people detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The ruling allows the plaintiffs’ claims against CoreCivic to move forward because the company can now be held liable for violating anti-trafficking laws and reaping unjust economic gains by doing so....
:---P Liberal judge? Nope, just sane and honorable.

Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia Clay D. Land

Clay Land, what were his parents thinking?
Education and law practice

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Land received a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Georgia in 1982 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Georgia Law School in 1985. He was in private practice in Columbus, Georgia, from 1985 to 2001.

Political career

Land served as a member of the Columbus City Council from 1993 - 1994. In 1994 he was elected to the Georgia State Senate as a Republican. He served three terms (6 years) representing District 16 ...
Southern GOP through and through.
District court service

On September 21, 2001, President George W. Bush nominated Land to a seat on the United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia vacated by J. Robert Elliot. Land was confirmed by the United States Senate on December 13, 2001, and received his commission on December 21, 2001. He has served as Chief Judge since October 1, 2014.
Thanks Shrub! (not sarcasm)
Notable case

Land was in the spotlight in late 2009 when he tried the case Rhodes v. Macdonald, in which Army physician Connie Rhodes attempted to secure a restraining order against her being deployed to Iraq on the argument that President Barack Obama was not born in the United States and was ineligible to serve as President. Land rejected the argument as frivolous. Within hours of Land's decision, the physician's attorney, Orly Taitz, told the news site Talking Points Memo that she felt Land's refusal to hear her case was an act of treason. Two days later, she filed a motion to stay Rhodes' deployment pending rehearing of the dismissal order. She repeated her treason allegations against Land and made several other intemperate statements, including claims that Land was aiding and abetting purported aspirations of "dictatorship" by Obama. Land rejected the motion as frivolous and ordered her to show cause why she should not be fined $10,000 for abuse of judicial process.

After Rhodes asked for Taitz to be removed as her attorney, on October 13, 2009, Judge Land issued a scathing 40-page ruling sanctioning Taitz and imposed a monetary penalty of $20,000 under Rule 11 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure....

Al Otro Lado v. Kelly

Al Otro Lado, Inc., et al. v. John F. Kelly, et al., is a class action lawsuit against officials at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in a federal district court in California challenging CBP’s unlawful practice of depriving asylum seekers access to the U.S. asylum process. The plaintiffs allege that CBP and DHS are systematically violating U.S. and international law by denying individuals even the opportunity to apply for asylum; instead the government is consistently turning away individuals facing persecution, forcing them to return to countries where they face grave violence and risk of death....

Current Status

On August 20, 2018, the court denied in part and granted in part the government’s motion to dismiss, allowing the majority of plaintiffs’ claims to go forward.

Is Barack Obama appointee, United States District Court for the Southern District of California Judge Cynthia Ann Bashant, some liberal lightweight ignorant of border realities?
... Bashant served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of California from 1989 to 2000. She served as deputy chief of narcotics from 1995 to 1997 and chief of border crimes from 1997 to 1998. In these positions, Bashant prosecuted crimes involving Mexican drug cartels and methamphetamine labs.

From 2000 until 2014, when she joined the federal bench, Bashant has served as a judge of the Superior Court of California, San Diego County, handling both criminal and juvenile matters. From 2009 to 2012, she was the presiding judge for the juvenile dependency and delinquency courts....

Immigrants and people of color are under attack by ICE and CBP. We can not continue to fund these agencies. Instead, you must cut funding for the detention and deportation machine in the final funding bill for next year and take immediate action to stop the funding increase for detention in the short-term continuing resolution.

What you need to know – the Administration’s decision on refugee admissions

... The Presidential Determination on Refugee Admissions is the ceiling on the number of refugees the U.S. can resettle in the coming federal fiscal year. The administration is required to consult with Congress in advance of their final decision, which is made by the end of each September.

The 1980 Refugee Act established the modern framework for refugee resettlement, including the setting of the annual refugee admissions ceiling and a system for resettling refugees based on need....

The 1980 Refugee Act was met with bipartisan support, passed unanimously, and signed into law by President Jimmy Carter. Since its passage, more than 3 million refugees have successfully rebuilt their lives in communities around the U.S.

The refugee admissions ceiling is determined through consideration of global humanitarian need, capacity of the resettlement program, and U.S. strategic interests. The 1980 Refugee Act stipulates that the administration must address these factors in a Report to Congress as part of the required consultations process. As stated by law, the refugee admissions ceiling must be “justified by humanitarian concern or otherwise in national interest.”

In Fiscal Year 2018, the administration set a refugee admissions ceiling of 45,000 refugees. This is the lowest refugee admissions ceiling in the history of the modern U.S. resettlement program. What’s even more concerning is the likelihood that less than half of this number of refugees will actually be resettled in our communities, significantly weakening America’s longstanding commitment to the world’s most vulnerable people. In the first nine months of FY18, just over 16,000 refugees were resettled — less than one-third of the way toward meeting the refugee admissions level.

Image

In the world today, 68.5 million people have been forced to flee war, persecution or conflict—25.6 million are refugees, meaning that they were forced to flee across international borders. We are facing the largest refugee crisis since WWII.

The Syrian civil war (partial US responsibility) alone has driven 13.5 million people from their homes since 2011. In Myanmar last year, deadly violence forced 671,000 Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh. And in other conflict zones around the world, including Yemen (partial US responsibility), South Sudan and Central America (partial US responsibility), families are fleeing for their lives every single day.
