The Music Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Yes, and he did one of the best renditions of "Malaguena" ever.

Also excellent. Thanks.

I have a project. There will be an attempted conversion therapy at brd.

I have been a bluegrass and old time county fan for pretty much forever. It ain't what you hear on the radio, other than a few npr programs.

Bluegrass isn't all filled with god and county bullshit, it's the daily life Old Time Country music by a bunch of poor 19th century English, Irish and Scottish immigrant settlers struggling to live in isolated Appalachia (with a little moonshine energy thrown in) mixed with some modern blues and jazz.

Take a look at this guy. plenty on YouTube if you want to listen - from pure bluegrass to his work with Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer

You are so good that your conversion therapy project succeeded with me 45 years ago. ;)

Hashish and moonshine are a nice combo.

We went to Union Grove 69 through 73(?). Great early on but too many biker types the last couple of years.

What do you think of Thile or his Punch Brothers bluegrass?

Galax was still half hillbillies and half hippies when I was going. Excellent combo, I thought.

Got a favorite example?

I've never been to the Galax Fiddlers Convention, but one year way back in the day we tried. Maybe started our own party a little early, got lost, missed Galax and ended up somehow in Independence, VA. Turns out they were having bluegrass that weekend, too. We saw a lot of authentic mountain music out of bands that will never make a living at it. One group were coal miners that had worked their shift then come down to play. Poured rain, everybody was wet, muddy, and generally stoned. Had to sleep in the car. Not the event we expected, but a great time anyway.

Early 70s Union Grove was like a pop festival but cold. I have no idea why the biker gangs came.

Try any of this

Not real Bluegrass, but Bluegrass-derived - Russian band "Bering Strait"
Now defunct, too bad - they were really good musicians and put on a great concert.

Their tour with Leaning Gay was really good. ;)

Bering Strait was a country music band from Russia whose style was sometimes called "redgrass". :D

Check out David Grisman; not exactly bluegrass but it's all acoustic, very well played and very well recorded. The David Grisman Quintet album has photos of the instruments on the cover instead of the artists. Some of them are over 100 years old (the instruments, not the guys).

He does bluegrass and old time. A lot of his work with Jerry tended toward Old Time.

Yeah, I've got one of the Jerry Garcia / David Grisman records; it has a version of "Friend of the Devil" that's much better than the old Dead version. About ten years or so ago, I got to see Grisman at the Orange Peel in Asheville.
