The car thread ...

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Wrong St. Petersburg :(
"Wrong"? There's no St. Petersburg in SC or NJ, is there?

Maybe wrong poster? billy.pilgrim lives in FL.

I think it's because I have st Petersburg listed in my profile.

There's one in russia. I was born there and adopted by a rich progressive African American couple here in the states that jumped upon the trend of buying up cheap foreign babies as a fashion statement of one's acceptance diversity.

I once visited St. Petersburg for a few days.

At the time it was called Leningrad.

That settlement covers 2.0 litre engines only.

But US authorities have been notified of cheats in VW, Audi and Porsche's 3.0 litre engines. The engines would shut down emissions control systems after about 22 minutes. Methods to measure emissions usually last about 20 minutes.

So, look for a second settlement. Plus similar settlements in other countries.
Apparently that first settlement has the electric car industry worried.

The US settlement (so far) dictates that the automaker has to invest $2 Billion in projects "that will encourage Americans to expand use of zero emission vehicles in the future." Meaning not just electric vehicles but electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

And since that charging infrastructure isn't standardized yet, for $2 Billion plus their own new lines of electric cars, Volkswagen could dictate terms to everyone else.

I don't know, but is $2 Billion worth a little dictation? Is anyone else committing that kind of money?

Tesla certainly is.

Alas, the other electric car makers are using incompatible charging stations.

Much the same as with other new technology: Either get everyone to agree on a standard, or everyone throws money at competing standards until one wins.

DVDs for example. There were two prominent competing standards, but the issue was settled (with a surfing competition) before they went to market.

Or HDTV: A collection of standards duct-taped together before going to market. Three different resolutions. Each in interlaced format for backward compatibility and non-interlaced format for quality. With HDCP DRM added later making the first few years of HD devices obsolete.

HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray didn't get settled before going to market. Apparently because both sides were in a rush to get established, because there were even better technologies coming down the pipeline.

Best guess: The Volkswagen situation may encourage those already producing charging stations to duct-tape their standards together. All chargers working with both Teslas and non-Teslas, with adapters at the charger itself.

That plus $2 Billion may be a good thing, I hope.

If gasoline can be standardized everywhere, you'd think that charging stations could be, too. Federal or hemispheric intervention needed?

Carma:
Quad Bike Safety?

Thinking of buying a quad bike to explore the backcountry? Think twice. Australian lawyer William Ray was killed on May 22 when he was thrown from his all-terrain quad bike in rural Victoria state and pinned underneath. Ray had made a name for himself in 2005 by representing Honda, the maker of the quad bike, when they fought the introduction of mandatory installation of anti-roll bars on quad bikes.

Most nature lovers had already decided to forgo a motorized vehicle for back country exploration, with the possible exception of snowmobilers when deep snowfall hinders hiking. Kind of hard to really experience the world with all your senses when an engine’s roaring in your ears. Or when you’re dead.

Techdirt: Volkswagen Created A 'Backdoor' To Basically All Its Cars... And Now Hackers Can Open All Of Them
In other words, VW created a backdoor, and assumed that it would remain hidden. But it did not.
[...]
On a related note, the article points out that the researchers who found this vulnerability are the same ones who also found another vulnerability a few years ago that allowed them to start the ignition of a bunch of VW vehicles. And VW's response... was to sue them and try to keep the vulnerability secret for nearly two years.
One more time, kids: A backdoor for the good guys is a backdoor that the bad guys will find every time, and they will use it. Banks and others are now being attacked by botnets of infected home routers, because half the home routers on the market had backdoors that only the good guys were supposed to know about.

Add another $.12 Billion in payments to dealers for the reduction in value of VW dealerships and additional payments for vehicles that could not be sold.

And like the payout to customers, expect eventual payouts to dealers in other countries.

VW says 300-mile range EV will charge in 15 minutes and cost less than gas version

... Engadget reported that charging a battery sufficient for 300 miles of driving in 15-minutes would require 800-volt charging technology. As a comparison point, Tesla’s Model S gains 58 miles of range per hour of 240-volt charging. So if VW is going to deliver on the 300-mile range with 15 minutes of charging promise, charging technology development will need to make a big leap pretty fast. And then the chargers will have to be widely available if owners are going to use the EVs for longer trips....
If true, wow.
