Sigh, 2-0 Brasil. 7th straight WC that Brasil has advanced to the Quarterfinals, 7th straight WC that Mexico has been knocked out in the Round of 16.

I'm 0-3-2 in Knockout Stage games. Good thing I'm not gambling this year.

Changed my mind, nothing against Belgium but I'd like to see Asia stay represented. Go Japan. Then, I'll probably root for the Belgium-Japan winner vs. Brasil, but without much expectation.

Tomorrow:
Go Sweden vs. Switzerland.
Colombia vs. England, no preference.

Crap, heavy underdog Japan went up 2-0, but Belgium came back to win 3-2 with the last goal coming with seconds left in the game.

I'm 0-4-2 in Knockout Stage games.

Colombia scored late in stoppage time, another 1-1 game, another scoreless extra time, another PK shootout - first time ever to have 3 in the Round of 16, England goalie blocks 2!, England wins PKs 4-3.

I don't know that the ref was biased, I saw him issue a yellow card to Colombia that wasn't warranted and not call a PK against Colombia that he should have. However:

England scored its lone goal on a PK;
Fouls Committed: 23 Colombia, 13 England;
Cautions/Yellow Cards: 6 Colombia, 2 England.

Maybe he should get a bodyguard for 3 1/2 years or so.

Oh my, the ref is American.

Colombia player accuses controversial U.S. referee of bias toward England after World Cup loss

Maradona takes aim at Harry Kane and England as he claims Colombia were victims of theft

I did not watch enough of the game close enough to say that there was bias, but I'm not surprised by the accusations.

Uruguay beats Portugal, 2-1. The group leaders win the day, South America and Europe are balanced. Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo lose on the same day, that probably doesn't happen often. (France's Kylian) Mbappé has stated that growing up he idolized Cristiano Ronaldo. Ouch. :D

Uruguay plays France in a week, go Uruguay.
France 2, Uruguay 0. :( France's goalie was brilliant, not so much Uruguay's. Huge flub at 1:10 -

Belgium went up 2-0, barely held on to win 2-1. I think I heard that this will be the 1st WC Semis without Brasil since 1930!

I'm 1-1 in Quarterfinals games.

England 2, Sweden 0. Oh well, I don't hate England, I will root for it over either Croatia or Russia. 1st time in the Semis since 1990, 1966 before that. Every 2-3 decades seems to be the pattern.

I'm 1-2 in Quarterfinals games.

Spain dominated almost every offensive category:
Shots 25-7
Shots on Goal 9-1
Fouls Committed 5-19
Ball Possession 75%-25%!

However, Russia's defense hung tough, it scored both regular time goals - one for Russia, one for Spain - it kept extra time scoreless, and it won the penalty kick shootout. Crap.

1-1 tie again, penalty kicks again, the Danish keeper stopped an impressive 2 tries, this after a PK save late in extra time, the Croatian keeper stopped an unheard of 3 tries, crap again.

I'm 0-2-2 in Knockout Stage games.

Go Croatia vs. Russia.
Russia - worst team in the WC, ranked #70, wouldn't have had a slot if the field was twice as big  , only in by virtue of being host. Played heavy defense again, conceded all offensive stats including ball possession 35%-65%, but it works for them. No one expected them in the Quarter finals.

1-1 tie in regular time again, ut-oh. But, Croatia scored in the 1st extra time period, yes. Then, Russia scored in the 2nd extra time period, 2-2 penalty kicks again, ut-oh. But, Croatia won 4-3 on PKs, cool. Only the 2nd time that a team has won two consecutive PK shootouts in the WC. Argentina in 1990 was the other one.

I'm 2-2 in Quarterfinals games, 3-6-3 in Knockout Stage games.

France is the only remaining traditional powerhouse. An all European final four sucks.

I want:
Belgium > France
England > Croatia
Belgium > England
If necessary:
England > France
or
France > Croatia

This is interesting:
Ranking World Cup semifinalists

... We should basically call this the 2018 European Championships....

4. Croatia ...

3. England ...

2. France ...

1. Belgium ...
My preferences above are just that, not based on who I think are the better teams. However, they exactly match this article's ranking except for my picking England > France if that's the final.

SEMIFINALS

Tuesday, July 10: France vs. Belgium – St Petersburg 2pm
Wednesday, July 11: Croatia vs. England – Moscow (Luzhniki) 2pm

THIRD-PLACE MATCH

Saturday, July 14: St Petersburg 10am

FINAL

Sunday, July 15: Moscow (Luzhniki) 11am

France topped Argentina, 4-3, arguably the most exciting game of the WC so far. The star was Kylian Mbappe, scored 2 and played an important role in another French goal.

He scored a goal against Peru at the 2018 World Cup and became the youngest French goalscorer at the World Cup at age 19.

19! He's the son of immigrants, a father from Cameroon and an Algerian mother. I hope the French are throwing that in the face of Marine Le Pen and other reichwing bigots.

Croatia wins 2-1 on a 2nd extra time period goal, sigh. 1st team to win 3 straight extra time games, with just 4 million people 2nd smallest nation to ever make the finals .

I'm 0-2 in Semifinals games, 3-8-3 in Knockout Stage games. Really good thing that I didn't gamble this year. A lot of my picks were even favorites, so I definitely wouldn't have changed those if gambling.

Go France on Sunday.
Go Belgium > England for 3rd on Saturday.

Belgium was guaranteed its best finish ever before the game started. England won it all in 1966.

Belgium dominated the first half, scored early. England dominated the second half, Belgium scored late, 2-0. 4-8-3 in Knockout Stage games.

I'm having second thoughts about the Final. I kinda like underdogs. I think France will win, Croatia has dodged the bullet too many times. However, maybe I'll just root for a good game or will decide who I favor after it starts.

He makes $20.5 million per year! By comparison:
Kevin Durant

... As a professional, he has won two NBA championships, an NBA Most Valuable Player Award, two Finals MVP Awards, the NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award, four NBA scoring titles, the NBA Rookie of the Year Award, and two Olympic gold medals. Durant has also been selected to eight All-NBA teams and nine NBA All-Star teams.

Off the court, Durant is one of the highest-earning basketball players in the world ...
He makes $4 million per year, not counting endorsements.

4-8-4 in games after Group Play, maaaybe 5-8-3 since I said that "I think France will win".

Netherlands 3-1 > Cameroon
Canada 2-0 > New Zealand
Both qualify for last 16, with the 20 June Canada-Netherlands game deciding the seeding. Cool, I like Cameroon and New Zealand, too, but no one was betting on them. I'll be rooting for both Canada and Netherlands deep into the tourney, if not all the way.

England has also qualified for last 16, not sure about other group leaders like France, Germany and Italy.

Go Chile > USA 16 Jun, unlikely, then Sweden > USA 20 Jun, possible.

Sweden 5-1 > Thailand
USA 3-0 > Chile
The Chilean goalie is one of the best I've ever seen - Christiane Endler, Player of the Match.

Both qualify for last 16, with the 20 June Sweden-USA game deciding the seeding. If they draw, USA will be the group winner based on a goal differential that it still would have won if it only beat Thailand 4-0 instead of by an obscene 13-0. The players and fans excusing the ugly American team because of goal differential are lying.

Japan, England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Canada have a qualified with a game to spare.

Still alive. Too complicated for me to figure out which 4 non 1st or 2nd in their group teams can still qualify. Could be that all 6 of these teams get in plus just 1 other. -0-?
Group A
Norway
Nigeria
Go Nigeria! Nothing against Norway, but there are enough Europeans already and Nigeria is Africa's last hope.
Group B
Spain
China PR
Sigh, I like Spain a lot more, but a China win would be good for the sport. No preference.
Group C
Brazil
Australia
Go Australia, more likely, Oceania represent! But, nothing awful about Latin America having a sole rep.

China PR 0-0 vs Spain. Hah, sorta what I wished for.
Spain (1-1-1) is in by virtue of a 1 goal differential advantage. China PR (1-1-1) may still advance with its 4 points.
