Some competitive games this week.

Go:

#8 Washington St. -14 @ California Ugh
Pittsburgh +12 vs #20 N.C. State Arrrgh, Pitt had the spread beat by 1 with 2 minutes left, knew that NCSU would run, allowed a 40 yard TD scamper.
West Virginia -3.5 vs #24 Texas Tech, knock it out of the rankings WV came back late from 18 down to win by 11, cool.
Kansas St. +6 vs #6 TCU, knock it out of the top 10 Nope
#17 Michigan -7 @Indiana, climb back up there Push
LSU +7 vs #10 Auburn Auburn is the 3rd top 10 team to go down. LSU ranked now?
Texas +7.5 vs #12 Oklahoma TX hangs on to beat the spread by 2.5, good enough.
Memphis -3 vs #25 Navy, knock it out of the rankings Push, Navy will be unranked.
#21 Michigan St. -4 @Minnesota Push
Utah +13 @ #13 USC UT loses by 1 on a daring 2 point try with 40 seconds left. Meh, I’ll take the spread win.
#19 S. Diego St. -7.5 vs Boise St. Nope
#5 Washington -17.5 @Arizona St. Awful weekend for the state of Washington.
#23 Stanford -10.5 vs Oregon, the Ducks ain't swimming this year The Ducks were able to tackle a wascally wabbit, tackle Cardinals not so much.

I'm unsure about #11 Miami (FL) -5.5 vs Georgia Tech, advice? Miami wins on a chip shot walk-off (essentially) FG after a spectacular catch, but misses the spread. You were correct, bastard.
I'm in the middle of the pack. The five 1900 hour games ALL suck, the smallest spread is 24.
8-12 yuck

Losers: #s 2, 5, 8, 10, 19, 24 and 25. Do 4 top 10s ever lose at the same time? Whole new rankings later today.

Tiger is the mascot, always has been.
The story is that a student woke on a Civil War battlefield and found a young eagle chick that he raised. After returning to finish his degree, he stayed as a teacher. The eagle became known around campus as War Eagle. He was startled after a touchdown by crowd noise and as he flew the crowd pointed and screamed War Eagle.

Or

I also know why Clemson has a tiger mascot and why their colors look like what Auburn's orange and blue would fade to.

And why Auburn students roll the trees at Toomers

That's interesting - UNC has a similar situation in that the nickname is "Tarheels" but the mascot is a ram ("Rameses"). There is a Rams Club, a Ramshead tavern, and rams faces on decals and stuff. But they're still the "Heels."

On a related topic, my votes for all-time best college mascots would be FSU's Chief Osceola, followed by (a long way back) Colorado's Ralphie, Oklahoma's Sooner wagon, and West Virginia's Mountaineer. The live War Eagle flying would be up there, too.

So what's the story on Alabama's elephant?

Again, the eagle is not our mascot. Aubie, our mascot, puts on a good show.

Understood, but IMNVHO I'd rather watch a soaring eagle than a guy in a tiger suit. Now if you had a real tiger...

Turns out LSU does have a real tiger, and has since 1930-something. And apparently a "world class" tiger habitat. Actually, I was joking originally. I didn't think it would be legal for one reason or another to keep a live tiger.

They brought him to the games until last year. The new mike does have some digs. The last Mike died last fall of cancer. It was a big deal. I believe that the past couple of Mikes have been part of a rescue.

I think that all of Auburn's eagles are rescues unable to return to the wild. I don't keep up, but have heard that the Raptor Center is mostly about rescue.

UAt has no live mascot that I am aware of

AU's eagles and LSU's tigers seem to have a much longer liver than the more acceptable mascot - the UGA bulldog - 1 or 2 years tops then they die of cancer or cardiac disease.

but before that, they had a good one

True for Mike VI, which does make a difference, not exactly for the current Mike VII. PETA opposes the practice. The facility does sound nice, and it's good that they ended the display at games.

Not the current one.

unable to return to the wild.

That could be, they don't really say.

They used to. Their own in the 1940s, rentals at least through the 1950s. Wiki isn't clear on when the practice ended, but it may have been in the early 1960s when they started with the human mascot.

Go:

#5 Wisconsin -24.5 vs Maryland. Yeah, I'm a traitor, but have you seen who the top 4 are?
Texas -7 vs #10 Oklahoma St. Hook 'em out of the top 10.
N. Carolina +21 @ #14 Virginia Tech
#18 Michigan St. -7 vs Indiana
#20 UCF -7.5 @ Navy. Sink 'em.
Kansas St. +14 vs #9 Oklahoma. Get 'em out of the top ten Sooner rather than later.
#19 Michigan +9.5 @ #2 Penn St. Get 'em out of the top ten, the win I most want to see.
Arkansas +15.5 vs #21 Auburn. NOWDE.
#13 Notre Dame -3.5 vs #11 USC . Best game of the day?
#15 Washington St. -10.5 vs Colorado. Do Cougars eat Buffalo?

I'm not sure about #24 LSU -7 @ Mississippi. Advice?

Meanwhile 7-0 North Carolina A&T is ranked # 11 or 12 and 5-2 Western Carolina is ranked #19 or 21 in the FCS, and 6-0 Wofford (boo) is ranked #5.

C'mon, you're 1-1, you gotta at least break the tie. You've got 45 minutes.

LOL, WI tries and gets an utterly meaningless FG with 36 seconds left . . . to beat the spread by 0.5!

Texas -7 vs #10 Oklahoma St. Hook 'em out of the top 10.

So close. TX loses but beats the spread by 4 in OT, nice.

I do acknowledge and attest that SEC officials have in fact just moments ago imposed a holding penalty on Alabama.
