NL West: Rockies-Dodgers (4:09 ET, ESPN): IF Colorado wins: Rockies are NL West champs, host NLDS vs. ATL starting Thursday. Dodgers visit CHC/MIL loser for NL wild-card game. Baseball needs tiebreaker rules:
One would assume that tiebreakers would be based on:
Head to head;
Division record;
League record;
But not necessarily in that order. After that, things like run differentials would be the next step.

League record: Chi Cubs and Milwaukee both have 82 wins. :D
Division record: Chi Cubs 41 - 35, Milwaukee 39 - 37. :thumbup:
Head to head: :?:

http://scores.nbcsports.com/mlb/standings.asp

That said, no matter how rational it seems a tie breaker means forsaking the revenue from an extra playoff game. Might be a tough sell.

Or, they could just have the tied teams play a best of 5 or best of 7 for all the marbles.

Misery loves company:

Dodgers, Rockies both win, forcing NL West tiebreaker

Loser hits the road for the wild card game.

Go Cubs!

Go As! (Wed., October 3 vs NY Yankees)

Go Rockies.

Ut-oh.
Would the Cubs or the Rockies be the 1st team to win a play-in game and the WS?

Technically not a play in game as playoff spots were clinched. The extra games were to decide the division champs vs the wild cards.

I mean this next game, not the games they just lost. There's really only one wild card, and it will play a series vs. the Brewers. I could have looked myself, though. This says: St. Louis in 2011, Boston in 2004, Florida in 2003, Anaheim in 2002, Florida in 1997. That 2002-04 streak is impressive.

:D I guess you would.

I partially flubbed :oops: . The Cubs and Rockies are both called wild cards, but they do have just one play-in game - tonight, 2005 ET in Chicago - to determine who is the wild card that goes to Milwaukee Thursday.

Yeah, I think they changed the format from a single wild card team to a one game playoff between two wild card teams around 2010 or so....

Not just because of the eventual winner. I can appreciate great pitching as much as anyone, but I'd rather see a 12-11 score after 5! hours of baseball. How many ways are there to say, "He caught the corner with that one," or "That was really just outside," anyhow?

The hug was funny.

The ump was pretty awful, his strike zone (though it was consistent for both teams) had to have been two inches off on the plate. So many swinging strike threes came from the hitters expanding their zone from called strike twos. Hitters didn't have a chance.
