Idiot box thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

“I was wrong. I wouldn’t bring him on my NFL team. He’s got problems,” Smith said on Tuesday’s episode of “First Take” on ESPN. “And I want to let everybody know, you do understand, if you listened to that video — not just watched it — the police officers showed incredible restraint. He was calling them the ‘B’ word. He was calling them the ‘N’ word. He was yelling at them. They turned their backs. They walked away. All they did was take the young lady and the kids into the cop car, and they drove them off. They did not respond to him. They did not antagonize him. They did nothing. He was screaming at them and calling them all kinds of names. “I want everyone out there to understand that the police officers at any given moment could have turned around and arrested him. You don’t get to talk to police officers like that. You don’t get to berate them and think that that’s not a crime. You can actually get arrested for that. They could have arrested him. They did no such thing. They all walked away, they got into their cop cars and they drove off. And he was screaming all kinds of obscenities at them. He seemed completely out of control.”

Yelling profanities in front of his young children. This idiot has some serious problems.

So Hank Azaria, one of the best voice actors ever in the business, isn't going to do Apu on the Simpsons anymore. OK, fine - it's a cartoon series and voice actors can be changed. But for those complaining that a white guy shouldn't be doing Apu's voice, I'd challenge them to go into the 7-11 of their choice and try to say Apu isn't accurate.

And they probably don't know that Nancy Cartwright isn't really a 10-year old boy.

Not an important issue for me, but I think that "Apu perpetuates racial stereotypes" bothers folks more than "voiced by a white actor." If The Simpsons originated in India, would the Homer character be racist?

I don't mind that either Nancy, Bart or both are trans, either.

C'mon, they earned those stereotypes. Do the 7-11 test. Or call for tech help from most any company.

Tech: "Good -um- morning. My name is Malcomb. How may I service you today?"
Me: "Malcomb my ass, you're Habib, and you're going to read from a patterned diagnostic chart and not pay the least bit of attention to my problem."
(not really - only in my imagination)

Characters usually get played to a stereotype to some degree - that's how the audience knows what the character is. And there are a lot more awful accents/dialect out there than Apu. Highly exaggerated Chicago accent on one of the "Chicago Fire" characters; Horrid New Orleans accent on the (mercifully deceased) character on NCIS New Orleans. Hardly anyone gets any southern accent right except for the deep south non-rhotic version that hardly anybody uses for real. But at least there seem to no longer be any "Tontos" saying "Ugh-me go to get beer."

Even better, I've been to India a couple of times, and have sailed with Indian crew.

Plus, Apu isn't a particularly negative stereotype. He's got a heavy accent, but otherwise has shown up for work for 30 years and is saner than many in The Simpsons universe. He "holds a Ph.D. in computer science," but enjoys his grad school Kwik-E-Mart "job and the friends he had made." He's a family man with octuplets, a vegan and a devout Hindu.

I daresay he would fit into our real world better than most of the cast.

Federal agents have arrested a Rancho Cordova nurse in what they describe as a scheme to run an online pharmacy that sold more than 20,000 opioid prescription pills to customers nationwide using dark web internet accounts.

How was Episode 1? I don't have CBS All Access. Seems to be a good reception so far:

Austin lawyer known as ‘DWI Dude’
https://www.dallasnews.com/news/crime/2 ... an-narcos/

Jamie Balagia was found guilty of wire fraud, obstruction and other charges after a two-week trial in connection with his representation of Colombian drug traffickers.

Balagia ran in 2014 for Texas attorney general on a Libertarian platform of legalizing marijuana. He called himself the “DWI Dude” for his expertise and once arrived for a hearing in Plano with a Winnebago decorated with his image and the advertising slogan, “Busted? Call the Dude!”

Really good. Just enough nostalgia to remind you of where it came from, interesting developments alluded to over the last twenty years, promising new characters and of course, Patrick Stewart as a 90ish Picard sucked me right in.

Only one episode, but I have higher hopes for this over Discovery (hate the recent movies in the Kelvin timeline, all cheese, no smarts).

Sounds like Biden's leftist campaign tour bus.

I would not say I have cheese hatred to the extent of the old Monty Python skit with Spam, but it's close. I mean, I will be as likely to have cheese on pie or cereal as Spam on pie or cereal. Fuck that noise.

That's pretty standard as far as social media insanity goes. That's the reality a huge chunk of Americans live in. Memes are the perfect format for brainwashing the intellectually lazy.

Conceptually not much different from editorial cartoons, but now anybody can do it. And instead of a distribution limited to the subscribers of a newspaper or magazine, the stupidity can be read by millions in seconds. And there's no arbiter of taste or truthfulness.
