Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Misogynists and other RWers, even their "scientists", just lie and lie and lie. They can't help themselves.
Researchers Behind Abortion Pill Studies Land In Hot Water With Science Journal
The studies raised questions about the safety of the drug mifepristone, the most common method of ending a pregnancy.

Two studies used to justify a crackdown on mifepristone access were retracted Monday by the scientific publisher Sage over undeclared conflicts of interest with anti-abortion groups and a “lack of scientific rigor” used in the research.

Both of the studies have been used by anti-abortion plaintiffs and conservative federal judges in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA to cast doubt on the Food and Drug Administration’s longstanding approval of the drug, which is used in the most common method of abortion in the United States.

The case is scheduled to go before the U.S. Supreme Court next month.

The academic publisher said in a statement that it took a closer look at the studies in response to a reader’s concerns.

“Sage confirmed that all but one of the article’s authors had an affiliation with one or more of Charlotte Lozier Institute, Elliot Institute, and American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, all pro-life advocacy organizations, despite having declared they had no conflicts of interest when they submitted the article for publication or in the article itself,” the publisher said.

“As a result of Sage’s inquiry into the authors’ conflicts of interest, Sage became aware that a peer reviewer who evaluated the article for initial publication also was affiliated with Charlotte Lozier Institute at the time of the review.”
:---P Busted.
Researchers James Studnicki and Tessa Longbons said in a statement to States Newsroom that the retractions constituted a “baseless ideological attack on our scientific research and experts.”
 Who does that sound like?
Studnicki is also the vice president of the anti-abortion Charlotte Lozier Institute.
Opps.
... U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk cited the “Longitudinal” and “Post Hoc” research in his April opinion that would have revoked the FDA’s decision in 2000 to approve mifepristone....
Opps. Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk was appointed by ex-PINO.
Kacsmaryk was born in 1977 in Gainesville, Florida. His mother, Dorothy, was a microbiologist; ... (who) chose to stay home with her children and was passionate about anti-abortion issues. He graduated from Abilene Christian University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude. He then attended the University of Texas School of Law, where he was an executive editor of the conservative Texas Review of Law & Politics....

From 2014 to 2019, he worked for First Liberty Institute, where he held the position of deputy general counsel. Reuters described Kacsmaryk as a "one-time Christian activist", noting that First Liberty Institute is "a Christian conservative legal group that pursues religious-liberty cases". While working for First Liberty Institute in 2015, he submitted an amicus brief for a lawsuit in the Supreme Court, and argued against a Washington law mandating that pharmacies are required to provide contraceptives.

Kacsmaryk has been a member of the Fort Worth chapter of the Federalist Society since 2012....

He has worked on cases opposing certain LGBT protections in housing, employment, and health care. He has referred to homosexuality as "disordered", and to being transgender as a "delusion" and a "mental disorder". He opposed the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling that had legalized abortion in the United States....

Conservative groups have strategically chosen to file lawsuits challenging many Biden administration policies in Kacsmaryk's division.... Legal experts have cited the practice as an example of "forum shopping" or "judge shopping."
:puke-left:
... In 2021, Kacsmaryk ordered the reinstatement of the "Remain in Mexico" policy, a Trump administration policy that required asylum seekers to wait outside U.S. territory while their claims are processed. In his order, he said that the Biden administration had ended the policy without fully considering the consequences. His decision was overturned by the Supreme Court of the United States on June 30, 2022.
Opps, shot down by even this SCOTUS. How embarrassing!
In November 2022, Kacsmaryk ruled that the Biden administration violated the Administrative Procedure Act by interpreting the Affordable Care Act to enforce the prohibition of discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity within "on the basis of sex".

Also in 2022, Kacsmaryk vacated protections for transgender workers enacted by the Biden administration, citing Bostock v. Clayton County saying that Title VII "prohibits employers from discriminating against employees for being gay or transgender, "but not necessarily [in the case of] all correlated conduct."
He's on an unpatriotic christofascist crusade :obscene-birdiered:
Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA

... On April 7, 2023, Kacsmaryk issued a preliminary ruling suspending the FDA's approval of mifepristone. Within an hour, another federal district judge—Thomas O. Rice of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington—issued a diametrically opposite ruling in a separate lawsuit, ordering the FDA to refrain from any actions to reduce the availability of mifepristone in 17 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.... Anti-abortion advocates praised his ruling, while abortion rights advocates denounced Kacsmaryk by accusing him of twisting laws.

Observers argued that in the written opinion, Kacsmaryk repeatedly used terminology employed by anti-abortion movements. He insisted on using the terms "unborn human" or "unborn child" in place of 'fetus', asserting: "Jurists often use the word 'fetus' to inaccurately identify unborn humans in unscientific ways." He further wrote that mifepristone is used to "to kill the unborn human" and "starves the unborn human until death". Kacsmaryk also called doctors who provide abortions "abortionists," and medication abortion "chemical abortion."
As I said, misogynists just lie and lie and lie. I think it's safe to assume that Kacsmaryk won't retract his citations of "science" now shown to be dishonest and sloppy.
... On April 21, 2023, a majority of the Supreme Court of the United States, without comment, voted to indefinitely implement an emergency stay all the restrictions against mifepristone while the lawsuit continued in the lower courts.
Phew, for now.

Happy Women's History Month!

This was made 2 years ago to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX:

4 episode series and I just watched Episode 4.
Chronicles the hard-fought battle to gain equal rights in education and athletics, examining issues women in sports still face today.
37 Words
Educational

The inspiring story of Title IX, the hard-fought battle to push for equal rights in education and athletics; charting spectacular transformation that 37 words have inspired in American culture and the lives of women.
Very well made and inspiring. I'll track down the other episodes.

Allowing for some lag in the start of implementation there are girls my exact age that were among the first to benefit.

She should send the AL Supreme Court a thank you basket.
... The special election was called after David Cole, a Republican who defeated Lands in 2022 by 7 percentage points, pleaded guilty to a voter fraud charge last year and resigned....
Sweet revenge.
Alabama legislator agrees to plead guilty to voter fraud
Republican Rep. David Cole of Huntsville will plead guilty to a charge of voting in an unauthorized location. He will resign when he enters his guilty plea.

An Alabama legislator has agreed to plead guilty to a felony voter fraud charge that he used a fraudulent address to run for office in a district where he did not live, according to an agreement filed Thursday.

Republican Rep. David Cole of Huntsville will plead guilty to a charge of voting in an unauthorized location, according to a plea agreement filed in state court. He will resign from office on the day he enters his guilty plea....

According to the plea agreement, Cole will serve 60 days in the Madison County Jail and the remainder of a three-year sentence on unsupervised probation....
If I understand the article correctly, he was not charged with using a fraudulent address to run for office. That would have just gotten him disqualified from office. Rather, the felony is then voting at that fraudulent address. Moron.

Ever since I was a teenager I've operated on this concept: never underestimate the stupidity of those in authority. But generally it's not the stupdity that dooms them; it's the arrogance that sprouts almost automatically when you're in some minor position of "power." This effect increases exponentially relative to the advancement toward ever increasing positions of authority or power. As a footnote, it's hilarious that all the right wing hysteria over voter fraud is because they themselves are doing it. If an AI setup looked at this, it would recomment they just kill themselves.

Huge for FL women, though it getting the 60% required is not certain. MSNBC pundits were skeptical whether it'll be enough to make up the partisan gap there in other elections -0-?

According to MSNBC the Biden camp very tentatively thinks Florida might be in play. billy.pilgrim can expect the ad deluge I'm getting. In case Florida's pro-choice voters have any doubts:

Donald Trump Supports FL's Six Week Abortion Ban
Trump's position on the issue comes at a critical time for voters

billy.pilgrim also gets a recreational weed use vote:

Florida Supreme Court Allows Abortion & Marijuana Initiatives To Remain On The Ballot
This will turn out a significant number of voters in 2024

Stoner Sluts for Joe!

A definite battleground state:
Pro-Choice Advocates in Arizona Get Enough Signatures for November Ballot Initiative: Report
Reproductive freedom on the ballot in Arizona in November is good news for Democrats

... With more than three months to go until the July 3rd deadline to submit ballot petitions to Arizona’s Secretary of State, Arizona for Abortion Access, a coalition of reproductive rights organizations, announced Tuesday it had gathered 506,892 petition signatures as of this past weekend; well above the 383,923 signature threshold to put an initiative on the ballot....

Arizona has been operating under a pre-statehood 19th century total abortion ban that went into effect immediately upon the overturning of Roe v. Wade, but successive courts have allowed abortions to continue in Arizona while a challenge to that law is heard on appeal.

A separate law banning abortions after 15 weeks that was signed by the former Republican Governor prior to Roe being overturned is also on hold pending the appeals process.

So lots of people, repugs included, think the AZ supremes made a bad decision. Seems to be, whether you look at it politically, logically, or legally. But couldn't the AZ legislature fix the problem in a half hour? Pass a law repealing the pre-statehood law and reinstate their overly strict 15-week limit. Is there something special about the old law that prevents its repeal or amendment?

Both sides may see the "overly strict 15-week limit" as an unacceptable compromise. Could be nothing will get done until the voters decide in favor of women and liberty.

I guess the lesson is to not trust the permanence of court rulings. Get rid of objectionable laws when you have the chance, even if the courts have put them on hold.

Fwiw, archaic AZ law also mandates male participation in posses and bans the sale of booze to Indians.

With no knowledge except a scintilla of common sense, how can a pre constitutional law override a law enacted after the constitution?

Yeah, I don't understand how a law that existed prior to statehood has any effect at all until or unless it was incorporated as state law. Like, maybe they passed something that says "the state of Arizona carries forth all existing territorial laws" which they may have done but seems unlikely.

Edit: Ok, so now I understand it but it's still bullshit. The 1864 law was apparently enforced up until 1971 and Roe V. Wade, and the 15-week law did not, and specifically did not repeal it or any other relevant laws. Prior to Roe v. Wade, there was a Planned Parenthood lawsuit contesting the 1864 law, which itself was put on hold due to Roe v. Wade. The argument, as it were, is that the 15 week law is supposed to be an exception to the 1864 law, meaning that the villagers can't bring their pitchforks and torches to haul out a doctor for an abortion done prior to 15 weeks, but they can after that. They also can't burn the witch who has an abortion until after the 15 weeks. But it could in fact all be fixed in one legislative afternoon - at least from a clarity standpoint. But yeah, the vote on amendment will end up being the determining factor. In the meantime, it's unlikely any doctors will be tarred and feathered or any witches burned, although apparently some county prosecutors will try.

Sidebar: some years ago we played with the idea of living in Arizona, and decided not to for reasons unrelated to politics. Nevertheless, I'm highly grateful for the good luck of not going there because they clearly have more than their share of village idiots.

Barbarism is the new normal.

Sadly, 'tis true. Or maybe it's always been normal among people we never had to associate with. I'm happy to blame Trump and Faux for a lot of the world's misery, but it's hard to believe they actually created so many evil people. I have to think they've been there all along out of view and were waiting to be turned loose and empowered by the Prince of Darkness or whoever.
