Adding More Memory

Unread post by Mr.B »

My PC is a small space-saver emachines with Windows7 Home Premium. For what I use it for, it's worked pretty decently for the last -/+4 years.
I did an AVG PC Tune-up recently and got this message:
Addition of Extra Memory:
Currently you have 1.8 GB of main memory installed on your system.
However, the operating system installed (Windows7), needs at least 2GB of main memory to guarantee optimal operation.

Our Recommendation:
Equip your system with at least 2GB of main memory.
As a rule, installing additional memory noticeably increases system performance, because fewer (slow) disk accesses are needed.

If you don't know whether additional memory can be installed on your computer, we recommend you consult an expert.
The specs on this system says it has 2GB of memory, and 500GB of hard drive, also I should be able to add up to 4GB of memory.
Not being a techie by any means, any ideas on how this would be accomplished? I can only find 2GB memory cards on the internet;
therefore do I just add another 2GB memory card?

Thanks in advance.

The reason it's reporting 1.8 instead of 2.0 gigabytes is *probably* because it's using approx. .2 gigabytes for it's integrated graphics card.

It would be my opinion that it's not worth upgrading to 4gb's considering it's age. If you're just using it for web browsing and occasional printing I seriously doubt you'll notice a difference going from 2 to 4. However if your porn browsing habits are exceptional, you may want to throw that beast away and get something with 8 or 16gb. Gay porn I heard takes close to 32gb, because god hates fags. (You could always get homerphobe to demonstrate his... )

If your dead set on doing it, I can link you to some software you can run to determine what kind of RAM you need to buy, however you'll be opening your PC up to install it. Unless you enjoy that kind of thing, you might be better off letting someone else handle it.

Thanks.....that what I wanted to know; if it was worth it. (I did find the memory board online.)

I could install the part myself, even repair the pc-boards due to my prior work experience...I'm just a geek when it comes to overall computer knowledge.

Inasmuch as porn browsing is not my bag, I guess this "beast" will be around for quite some time.
If my memory serves me well, seems I recall your having to replace your computer recently......32gb much?

No offense Mr. B., but if its an eMachine, you've got a bigger problem than memory. I didn't see whether it's 32 or 64 bit, so if its the former, its not going to read the full 4GB anyway. You'd probably be better off cleaning up your startup, services and junkware that clutters up most end users' computers. That would be the best bang for the buck.

Thanks. No offense taken.
Inasmuch as I do not use the computer for serious doings, such as banking or any other financial doings, I find this to be just right for my needs.
It's a small and compact desktop, made by Acer and is a 64 bit unit.

I did a factory reset back in December that wiped out all the accumulated junk and useless files and registries and so far it's been doing it's hickey pretty well.
The only thing that really slows it's boot-up time is the adblock and Google toolbar, but I can handle the inconvenience because of what they do for me.

I was only concerned about the memory thingy because of the notice I received from AVG, so I really wondered if that was a necessary move; Banni and yourself addressed the issue. (despite Banni's jab re his personal past-time). Thanks again, y'all. :D

Truth be told, if you disabled the module of AVG that reports low memory, it would probably speed the computer up too.
