Nice one. Where did you catch that one? I caught a nice string of those not long ago at Jocassee. Good eating, but a bit gamey tasting.JTA wrote:This is the best I got so far this year:
If this photo is the waterfall at the NC state line, which I believe it is, I was about 300 yards south of that.
I would love to snag something as big as that grouper!

I caught it at Camp Croft in Spartanburg. Lake Craig I think it's called.Seth Milner wrote:Nice one. Where did you catch that one? I caught a nice string of those not long ago at Jocassee. Good eating, but a bit gamey tasting.JTA wrote:This is the best I got so far this year:

I plan on taking my kayak out to Jocassee sometime and paddling around. Real pretty lake.
I really want to try to catch a gar. I saw some swimming around in Hartwell a while back and ever since I've wanted to try to catch one. Don't know if Jocassee has them but I'm sure it does.

Lake Greenwood has it's share of garfish; mean, dangerous, and nasty-looking critters. They are a predatory kill-for-fun-type trash fish. I've caught my share; they put up a good fight and those teeth will hurt you...big time!

I want to catch one so bad. How do you go about doing that? I heard you can't really use traditional fishing hooks because they have a bony snout, so you need to make your own lures out of rope so they get their teeth tangled up.Mr.B wrote:Lake Greenwood has it's share of garfish; mean, dangerous, and nasty-looking critters. Re: The Fishing Thread
I've never set out to intentionally catch 'em, but I imagine that would work. I've always caught the cuss-ed things with a traditional hook and line, usually before heir teeth cut the line.JTA wrote: "I want to catch one so bad. How do you go about doing that? You have to kill 'em to get your tackle back....just don't throw the dead fish back in the water; they'll float for days. I put my foot on his snout and cut his head off; bury 'em when I got back to shore. That is legal since they're considered a nuisance and volatile predator.
Here's a LINK on how some people catch them.
I have heard of people eating them, but to me that would be like eating a carp or a dog. Cleaning the thing would be a major job; their scales are like quarters or fifty-cent pieces, depending on their size. Good luck in your endeavors!

Re: The Fishing Thread
JTA .... if you really wanna catch something with teeth ....
(hint ... wear a chastity belt .... )
It's called a Pacu fish
In 2013, a pacu specimen was found by a fisherman in Denmark. This led to media reports mistakenly warning that the fish would attack male testicles.
The reports were based on a joke that was not meant to be taken seriously.

I do too. I just don't think to look north.

Same here. Went across the state line fishing in the Whitewater River. I think I've still got a lot to learn about trout fishing.
