Tree Hugger Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Maybe nobody has any control over the weather, but it's pretty easy to demonstrate that what happens on on Earth, including some things humans might do, do affect the weather.

So it is historically demonstrable that volcano eruptions affect weather. A recent example , Mount Pinatubo in the Phillipines, erupted in 1991, within a few weeks Mount Hudson in Chile also erupted. Data collected after these eruptions show that "mean world temperatures decreased by about 1°C over the subsequent two years."

But sure, volcanos affect weather, but they aren't exactly caused by people. But nuclear blasts are.

"The nuclear explosions would send massive clouds of dust high into the stratosphere, blocking so much sunlight that a nuclear winter would result. Global temperatures would plunge 20°C to 40°C for several months, and remain 2 - 6°C lower for 1-3 years. Up to 70% of the Earth's protective stratospheric ozone layer would be destroyed, allowing huge doses of ultraviolet light to reach the surface. This UV light would kill much of the marine life that forms the basis of the food chain, resulting in the collapse many fisheries and the starvation of the people and animals that depend it. The UV light would also blind huge numbers of animals, who would then wander sightlessly and starve. The cold and dust would create widespread crop failures and global famine, killing billions of people who did not die in the nuclear explosions" And subsequent studies find that to be an optimistic view.

So if weather can be affected by those things, what argument is there that other effects would occur with smaller causes. Throw up enough smoke from anything, say, a few skyscrapers burning, or a few million cars with bad exhausts. Keep throwing up smoke and gases constantly over a long period of time and what idiot would say there's no effect?

He does certainly prefer to play that role very convincingly.

As long as fuckin' idiots post here, I'm fittin' right in, aren't I? It's great to mingle with one's own kind. Oh, and this. I can take anything I dish out, unlike a certain pansy ass who claims he's ignoring my posts because he's afraid something I say will hurt his witty bitty feewings.

It doesn't matter. It's like inviting Eminem to provide live commentary on football. The comedy may not be intentional, but it's real.

HUGE NEWS! The Obama administration just announced it is canceling auctions for new oil and gas drilling in the Arctic waters off the coast of Alaska for 2016 and 2017. This is a victory for everyone that has fought to protect these waters and stop the fossil fuel dependence that’s driving global climate change. Thank you! Now it is time to take Arctic and Atlantic waters off the table to oil and gas drilling for good!

Dear Rep. McGrady & Sen. Apodaca,

Re: NC League of Conservation Voters 2015 Legislative Scorecard
http://nclcv.org/images/NCLCV_2015_Legi ... recard.pdf

I am disappointed by Rep. McGrady and disgusted by Sen. Apodaca. NC is too beautiful and its environment is too critical to our people to treat this way.

Sincerely,

From Apodaca no, he's possibly the worst rep I've ever had at any level of government, but McGrady once headed the NC Sierra Club. It's a shame, one could count on him to be green even more than any of the other issues he was somewhat sane and independent on. The more Leg longevity and power he's accrued, the more he sounds and acts like any other Republican.

How are your reps doing according to the NCLCV?

Tree Hugger victories in 2015:

More than 200 of our nation's 523 coal-fired power plants are now slated for retirement, albeit due in large part to fracked natural gas.
Shell gives up on Arctic Ocean drilling.
Congress designated 275,000 acres in the Boulder White Clouds area of Idaho as wilderness. Coupled with President Obama designating six new national monuments, more than one million acres of land are now protected for wildlife.
Keystone XL pipeline rejected.
Ongong rapid expansion of wind and solar.
A global AGW pact, we'll see about implementation.
