Anderson Cooper was right - Trump could indeed take a dump on the Oval Office desk, tweet it, and people would defend him. I think there are far more in the US than just Trump who have lost their grip.

A generation of boys/girls raised on the internet became adults. "Irony" became their modus operandi, and all of Trump's gaffes are laughed at as "trolling" liberals, who "take things too seriously".
