Fight back: Demand Congress lower prescription drug prices!

Target: All Members of Congress

Today, Donald Trump delivered an address on an issue that is important to millions of Americans: skyrocketing prescription drug prices. In that speech, he made it 100% clear that he is putting Big Pharma’s profits ahead of the American people. Trump ran on a promise to let Medicare negotiate aggressively, which would lower prices for everyone. Today, he’s abandoned that promise.

Donald Trump’s cowardice in blocking Medicare from negotiating lower drug prices is more proof that he works for the drug industry not the people.
He talked a big game on the campaign trail, but when it came time to take on the drug corporations he completely folded.

By putting pharmaceutical executives and drug corporations in charge of his administration, we are going to get more crushingly high prices. Even knowing full well that pharma owns this town, this is a new low of industry control of government.

Stand with Social Security Works and demand immediate action by Congress to address the national crisis of skyrocketing drug prices. The president’s empty rhetoric is not enough. Sign the petition today!

Following SPLC lawsuit, judge blocks Kentucky Medicaid waiver scheme

A federal judge today blocked the Trump administration’s approval of Kentucky’s Medicaid waiver plan, stating that the government acted in an “arbitrary and capricious" manner in approving the plan.

The plan included numerous illegal obstacles to accessing Medicaid health care services, such as requiring Kentucky residents to work in order to receive medical benefits....

Kentucky’s waiver plan, called “Kentucky HEALTH,” was set to take effect on July 1. But U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg’s decision sends the plan back to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to reconsider it in accordance with the Medicaid Act.

Because of the judge’s ruling, Kentuckians will continue to be able to access health care services through Medicaid....

Trump quietly shuts down HIV cure research to appease the religious right

... A scientist who was supposed to supply mice that have been modified with human fetal tissue for an HIV study emailed researchers that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) “has directed me to discontinue procuring fetal tissue.”

“This effectively stops all of our research to discover a cure for HIV,” he wrote.

A “pause” on research that uses aborted fetal tissue, something Christian conservatives strongly oppose, was announced by the Trump administration this past September. The move will affect numerous biomedical research programs.

Congressional Republicans have tried to ban all fetal tissue research for years to appease the religious right. 85 Republican House members wrote a letter to the head of the FDA asking for a ban on fetal tissue research shortly before the “pause” was announced.

The ban has long been a goal of the anti-abortion industry and has been part of the most recent attacks on Planned Parenthood. The group was falsely accused of selling aborted fetuses earlier this year....

The study would have relied on fetal tissue donated by women who have had legal abortions in order to produce “humanized mice,” mice that have human-like immune systems, according to Science. The mice have been used for years for research in infectious diseases, including HIV.

Mice are one of the few non-human animals that can be infected with HIV, which makes them key to testing HIV medication....

Yep, this is funny, but then so is randi. He did tell graduating seniors that lying and tricking classmates to study the wrong lessons got him ahead in college when test grades were scaled and after college he started his very own professional organization so his business cards would impress people who fall for fake shit.

Obit blaming Trump for hastening woman's death should have published

When Frances Irene Finley Williams took her last breath on Nov. 21, her family wanted it known that, while Donald Trump didn’t kill her, he certainly accelerated her demise.

An 87-year-old spitfire of a lady who had a voracious appetite for news and strong opinions about the direction of the country, she told her daughter about six months before her death, “If I die soon, all this Trump stuff has had an effect.”

... And just before the time and date of the visitation to be held near the end of December and the fact that if you were planning to wear blue jeans, shorts, flip-flops or tennis shoes to the service, Frances Irene Finley Williams didn’t want you to show up at all, Duff wrote it.

“Her passing was hastened by her continued frustration with the Trump administration.”

Art Williams said his mother would have appreciated the line....

A couple of days before the obituary was to appear in the print edition of the Courier Journal, he learned it had been rejected. He was told it could run, however, if the family removed the line about Trump.

An email from a Gannett office in Wisconsin that handles obituaries said, “we are not able to publish the obituary as is, due to the negative content within the obituary text.”

The family dutifully struck the sentence about Trump from the obit. Family members and friends attended the visitation and memorial service — none of them wearing blue jeans, shorts, flip-flops or tennis shoes.

But it still bothered Williams.

Williams, the former head of Louisville's Air Pollution Control District, noted that the Courier Journal exists “by reason of freedom of speech."

“My mom would have been offended — and I hope you are too,” he wrote.

People were. Nearly 80 people commented on his (Facebook) post. More than 100 replied with emojis....

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that politics are making their way into obituaries these days....

And when a Virginia woman died in May of 2016, her obit in the Richmond Times-Dispatch said, “Faced with the prospect of voting for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, Mary Anne Noland chose, instead, to pass into the eternal love of God.”

As we head into the 2020 election season, this ain’t going to get any better. We might as well get used to it.

Even if people can’t vote from the grave — unless they live in certain Eastern Kentucky counties — some of them are going to want to speak from it. And people should be able to say what they want about politics in obituaries they pay for, no matter who they support or oppose.

The family of Frances Irene Finley Williams thinks you should know she thought Trump was “crass, vulgar, racist, sexist, dishonest, corrupt and unintelligent.”

And you should.
Whether one thinks it appropriate for an obit or not, the hilarious irony is that we NEVER would have heard of it if some Trumpette at the Gannett office in Wisconsin hadn't decided to be a censor.

What hypocrisy!

Last night President Trump said it was a “major priority” for him to lower the cost of health care and to “protect patients with pre-existing conditions.”

We wish it were true.

In reality, Trump has been doing the exact opposite. He’s done everything he can to dismantle the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which already protects patients with pre-existing conditions.

And he’s done nothing whatsoever to lower health care costs, even though he claimed during the campaign that “[w]e’re going to have insurance for everybody” and that the “government’s gonna pay for it.”

Trump also promised repeatedly during the campaign that he would not cut Medicaid, the crucial health care safety net that was greatly expanded by President Obama under ACA.

Again, the reality is quite different.

The Trump administration has, in fact, concocted a cruel scheme to strip Medicaid coverage from the most vulnerable Americans under the guise of “work” requirements. Hundreds of thousands of people could lose the coverage they desperately need.

With your help, we’re fighting back.

Our lawsuit blocked this illegal plan in Kentucky last summer, and we went back to federal court last month to stop it again after the administration approved virtually the same scheme, which a judge called “arbitrary and capricious.”

We also sued the administration in December on behalf of Medicaid recipients in Arkansas, where some 17,000 people have already lost coverage.

The president is simply not telling the truth about what he’s doing.

But we will. And we won’t stop exposing the lies and cruelty that are hallmarks of this administration. Thanks for supporting this important work.

Sincerely,

Your friends at the SPLC

This way my stock portfolio goes up, I don't drag down the Medicare system or Social Security with a whole bunch of Life stuff and I can pass on to the kids and grandkids a little something to help them barely keep up with inflation.
