Education thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Should schools be required to teach all of the major religions? In addition to the ghost of some dead hippie type, and what about the Muslims (they liked the hippie guy too), and the Hindus, and the FSMs, and the Buddhists, and the Cargo Cult Guys (this one explains All in simple easy to understand terms), and Raelist, and the Subuds, and the L.Rons (sorry Tom but you and yours are fucking bat shit crazy), and the Universe People, and the Aghori (don't go here but further explains what happens when Cargo Cult gets to big), and the Pana Wave people, and the Nuwaubian Nation would have to have a place, and the most serious Discordians too, and the Aetherius Society probably don't even need school, and the Church of Euthanasians wouldn't require any schools anywhere for anybody, and the jedismists, and all the Zoroasters, and the Frisbeetarianists, and even the crazy Baptists deserve a place in our schools, after all we do send our kids to schools.

I think a comparative religion course, or survey of world religions, current and historical, has a much relevance as other cultural/history courses. Of course, the evangelicals and muslims will scream blasphemy since their own religion will not be presented as the "only true". There have been so many that some are bound to be missed, probably including the Church of Body Modification, but those could be covered in a section of "there are many others, and number of the adherents isn't the determinant of "real."
FSM studies can be covered in Home Ec, no need for a new class.

I think teachers should be valued, and thus paid, more than they are in a lot of places. The average salary of new university grads in 2016 was around $50,500 (which is really shocking, considering how long it took me to get up to $50K). Education majors got $34.8. So if we're comparing teacher pay to, as in the article, others at comparable education and experience level, and we find a "wage penalty", then what should we do about the generic engineers, who at a $64.9 salary get a 28% "wage reward"? Or about the petroleum engineers, who get $80.6 their first year, or a 59.6% "wage reward".

Point being, how the labor market values jobs isn't always fair, nor even reasonable, but it's the main determinant. Teaching used to be low value because it was "womens' work" and like secretaries and sewing machine operators was low wage. Whether that's still a major factor or not may be unclear, but it's part of it. And the constant bashing by Republicans has continued to devalue the profession. And the weakening of their unions (by themselves as well as by Republican leglislatures) hasn't helped. But action like in Oklahoma, for example, does help.

'If God existed, I'd have gotten into Penn': Meet the Trump official working on higher education policy

Odd, in an article focused on Eli Nachmany's dismal lack of credentials you would think that the reporter would state "graduating with distinction from NYU" in what? It's Sports Management, further making the case that this kid should NOT be making education policy.

Eli is a good buddy of Jared; they probably play high definition video games together. Jared heads, and possibly created, the office that Eli is assigned to, and he reports to Jared. Nobody knows what Eli will report or when he will do so. It's tragic that Eli didn't make it into Penn, but I'd say if god exists, he'was the guy who turned down Eli's application.

He didn't even go to the "real" NYU. Up until relatively recently, the "School of Professional Studies" was the equivalent of night school or extension education. NTTAWWT, but that degree isn't going to get him into Harvard Law. Wonder, oh I wonder how that happened?

(NC) Senate education budget is a dereliction of duty

Lots of sad and shocking data in the article.

Subject: Schools

Dear Rep. McGrady,

I am saddened that state funding per pupil for public elementary and secondary schools is below 2008 levels by about 8 percent.
‘Lost Decade’ Casts a Post-Recession Shadow on State Finances

You were in an education leadership position much or all of this time.

I am appalled that:
"If legislative leaders actually wanted to address schools’ needs, they could. Tax cuts since 2013 now drain $3.6 billion per year from state coffers, largely to the benefit of corporations and the wealthy. The Senate budget proposes a further windfall to corporations by reducing franchise taxes by $108 million in year FY 19-20, rising to $255 million in FY 20-21. And the budget writers leave another $1 billion unspent over the biennium. We could afford to do good things if legislative leaders wanted to do good things."

I am distressed that we're throwing more money at militarizing our schools when it doesn't enhance safety.
Do more cops in schools make them safer? New study looking at NC schools says no.
https://www.newsobserver.com/news/polit ... 62265.html

"It is disappointing news that on Thursday, the State Board of Education approved 10 new charter schools to open during the 2020-21 school year, including three in Wake County. This will bring the state's count to 206 charter schools. It is time to bring back the cap!"
-- Public Schools First NC

I am disgusted by this ongoing support or charters and vouchers when we now know that they fail at almost every supposed goal except creating legal racial and class segregation.

With this being your last Leg, is harming a generation of kids really the legacy you want to leave in your wake?

Sincerely,

The Striking Outlier: The Persistent, Painful, and Problematic Practice of Corporal Punishment in Schools

... Where corporal punishment is used in schools, black students and students with disabilities are more likely to be struck by an educator. The analysis in this report takes a close look at the data among schools that administer corporal punishment. It finds that black boys are about twice as likely to receive corporal punishment as white boys, and black girls are three times as likely as white girls. In more than half of the schools that practice corporal punishment, educators hit students with disabilities at a higher rate than those without disabilities. Four states – Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas – account for more than 70 percent of all students receiving corporal punishment in our nation’s public schools.

This data should shock our conscience – not only because studies show that students of color do not misbehave any more than their white peers, but because the impact of corporal punishment can be devastating on a student’s ability to learn and succeed.

There are much more effective ways to promote positive behavior, ways that keep students safe and in the classroom. Every child deserves the opportunity to attend school free from harm and free to learn. The minority of states that still allow corporal punishment in our schools should join the rest of the country in prohibiting this dangerous and discriminatory practice....
