Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Trial revives debate: When does border humanitarian aid become a crime?

When being humane is outlawed, only outlaws will be humane.

Opps, I was a few days behind the news. Continuing on the theme of Repugs trying to repress effective protest:
Felony Trial of No More Deaths Volunteer Scott Warren Ends in Mistrial

... Eight jurors believed Warren was innocent on all counts. Four believed he was guilty....

I can defend this much more easily than giving corporations that actually paid NO tax hundreds of millions in "refunds" and Jim Jordan should be able to as well, but he won't see it that way. He prefers handing out those millions instead of giving someone who works a low paying job a few hundred bucks after they actually pay into the system; I think the maximum EIC is about $1,800 but am not sure. It sure as hell isn't millions.

Undocumented immigrants pay in hundreds of billions in taxes for social security, Medicare/Medicaid, etc. that they will never be able to benefit from.

Aghast Twitter Foes Slam DOJ Lawyer Who Argued Against Soap, Beds For Migrant Kids

... Some Twitter users defended Fabian — slightly — saying she is just the face of a cruel Trump administration — and that many others are just as responsible for denying basic items to children that are routinely provided to serial killers in American prisons.

But for the most part, angry critics piled on her, and even provided her phone number for anyone who wanted to make a personal complaint (her voice mailbox was full Saturday, one caller reported)....

      Dear Sarah Fabian

I understand attorneys must sometimes advocate for things they don’t agree with.

But I can’t imagine that you took your job with the hope that you’d be asking the courts to approve rules that actually hurt children.

You don’t have to do this.

(Boston) Wayfair employees protest alleged sale of furniture for border detention facility
“We believe it is our business to sell to any customer who is acting within the laws of the countries within which we operate,” the company’s CEO responded in a statement.

Many employees at the home goods retailer Wayfair staged a walkout Wednesday after discovering what they believe is a large order of bedroom furniture the company fulfilled for a contractor that works with facilities detaining children near the US-Mexico border.

According to a letter signed by almost 550 employees, Wayfair has sold $200,000 worth of furniture to a nonprofit organization called BCFS. An order from BCFS was surfaced in the company’s Slack (a group chat platform) last week, and concerns began circulating when employees looked into the organization’s mission....

The furniture, according to the employee letter, was sent to a facility opening in Carrizo Springs, Texas, that will be “outfitted to detain up to 3,000 migrant children.” These kinds of facilities have come under increasing scrutiny and condemnation as reports about appalling conditions emerge....

      Thanks.

Interesting backstory, personal to Nash: Immigration Man.
David Crosby and Dave Mason on electric guitar, can't beat that.

It was released as a single in 1972.
Trevor Dodd posted it to YT 2008. I presume that the excellent "animated editorial by Andrew Thomas" was produced about the same time, no earlier than 2006 (2:00).
Both the song and video could have been made yesterday, sigh. I was already thinking this when I saw the first comment:
Either way you slice it, it's a timeless song.

Not that many years ago much of the country was horrified to learn that we'd become a direct torture state, covertly abusing scores of mostly adult enemy combatants and innocents. We lamented how far our nation had sunk into evil immorality. Then, we probably stopped the direct barbarity and reverted to our decades old practice of fostering client torture states, instead, while choosing not to prosecute any of our American torturers. Not great by any means, but it did feel like we'd pulled back from the abyss.

Now, we openly kidnap and abuse thousands of children, and neither they nor their parents are even enemies.

      We suck.

More events will certainly be added between now and Tuesday.

Below the Surface of ICE: The Corporations Profiting From Immigrant Detention
Activists are targeting the companies that make ICE run.

      JPMorgan Chase
"the private-prison duopoly of Geo Group (Boca Raton, Florida) and CoreCivic (Nashville, Tennessee), which operate most U.S. migrant detention centers."
      nonprofit Southwest Key
      defense contractor MVM Inc
      Cayuga Centers
Nakamoto Group (Rockville, MD, my boyhood home and even the same road my mom worked on for decades  )
      General Dynamics
      CSI Aviation
      Consulting firm Deloitte
      Salesforce
      Microsoft
      Pen-Link
"Palantir, a Silicon Valley data-mining firm owned by libertarian Trump supporter Peter Thiel"
      Amazon
      Bank of America
      BNP Paribas
      SunTrust
      U.S. Bancorp
      Wells Fargo
      Management & Training Corporation
      Northeastern University
      Comcast
      Correct Care Solutions (Nashville, Tennessee)
      Republican politicians
      Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee

      Victories:
"Consulting firm McKinsey terminated its contract with ICE"
"New York state directed all its pension funds to divest from Geo Group and CoreCivic, following New York City and Philadelphia."
"At least 10 members of Congress have rejected Geo Group donations, along with state Democratic parties in California and Florida."
... Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney revoked ICE’s access to a city law enforcement database, a huge win for local organizing groups. Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms prevented city jails from accepting new ICE detainees. And at least six cities and counties have canceled ICE contracts to use detention centers in their areas.

Bob Libal, executive director of Grassroots Leadership, recounts the organization’s victory in suburban Williamson County, Texas. The county voted in June to end its contract in January 2019 for the T. Don Hutto Detention Center, a CoreCivic-run women’s facility long accused of rampant abuse, though ICE could scramble to try and renegotiate. Grassroots Leadership used the testimony of 40 Hutto detainees separated from their families to sway county commissioners. “We had people going to the county every week to read letters of women detained there,” Libal says. “It was really the powerful experience that won.” ...
      Lancaster County, Penn.
