"And? We live next to a country with a "gun in every school locker" policy. When someone is killed by a gun in Canada, the gun is inevitably traced back to the US having been smuggled into Canada." My post wasn't intended to be flippant; rather than to express surprise that an act such as this occurred in Canada, a country that has made no bones about welcoming those of the Islamic faith. True that nuts abound everywhere.

Charles Koch first likened candidate Donald Trump's plan to ban Muslim immigrants to something Adolf Hitler would have done in Nazi Germany.
Trump critics were easy to find at the California desert resort this weekend, where attendance at a semi-annual conference was limited to the 550 people who donate at least $100,000 each year to the various conservative political and policy groups backed by Charles and David Koch.
The critics included Charles Koch himself, although the conservative patriarch did not mention Trump by name Sunday as he warned that the nation is facing a moment of "tremendous danger." He said the nation could "go the authoritarian route ... or we can move toward a free and open society. So this is our opportunity." ...
"The travel ban is the wrong approach and will likely be counterproductive," network co-chair Brian Hooks said Sunday.
"Our country has benefited tremendously from a history of welcoming people from all cultures and backgrounds," he said. "This is a hallmark of free and open societies."

Vrede too wrote:... while anti-Muslim terrorism seems likely in today's mosque attack, I haven't seen it confirmed yet. Could possibly be something else.
The two men arrested following the deadly shooting at a Quebec City mosque Sunday night are Alexandre Bissonnette and Mohamed Khadir, Radio-Canada has learned....
Police refuse to reveal any information about the men other than the fact they are in their late 20s or early 30s.
Police also said it's too early to know the motive, what charges may be laid or when they will appear in court....
A French name and a Muslim name, hmmm. Still anti-Muslim, Sunni vs. Shia, radical vs. moderate, personal beef? We'll see.

Just some perspective: Trump's travel ban would not have prevented 9/11.
The masterminds were Bin Laden (Saudi) and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (Pakistani). The ringleader of the hijackers was Egyptian. Of the hijackers, their nationalities were:
Saudi Arabia: 15
United Arab Emirates: 2
Egypt: 1
Lebanon: 1
Yemen: 1
The one Yemen would have been affected. But another could easily have been substituted.
Only one of two individuals apprehended in the Quebec City mosque shooting is now being considered a suspect, Quebec provincial police say. The second is being treated as a witness. No word on which is which.

Police: Alexandre Bissonnette has been identified as the sole gunman.
"Our government has a responsibility to defend our borders, but we must do so in a way that makes us safer and upholds all that is decent and exceptional about our nation.
"It is clear from the confusion at our airports across the nation that President Trump's executive order was not properly vetted. We are particularly concerned by reports that this order went into effect with little to no consultation with the Departments of State, Defense, Justice, and Homeland Security.
"Such a hasty process risks harmful results. We should not stop green-card holders from returning to the country they call home. We should not stop those who have served as interpreters for our military and diplomats from seeking refuge in the country they risked their lives to help. And we should not turn our backs on those refugees who have been shown through extensive vetting to pose no demonstrable threat to our nation, and who have suffered unspeakable horrors, most of them women and children.
"Ultimately, we fear this executive order will become a self-inflicted wound in the fight against terrorism. At this very moment, American troops are fighting side-by-side with our Iraqi partners to defeat ISIL. But this executive order bans Iraqi pilots from coming to military bases in Arizona to fight our common enemies. Our most important allies in the fight against ISIL are the vast majority of Muslims who reject its apocalyptic ideology of hatred. This executive order sends a signal, intended or not, that America does not want Muslims coming into our country. That is why we fear this executive order may do more to help terrorist recruitment than improve our security."

any truth to fake news claiming the shooter is a muslim
Trump: “We had the safest border in the history of our country - or at least recorded history. I guess maybe a thousand years ago it was even better.”

Early unconfirmed reports named two suspects: Alexandre Bissonnette and Mohamed Khadir. That second name obviously sounds Muslim. But it turns out he's a witness, not a suspect.
No word yet on Alexandre Bissonnette's motives or religion.
