Actually, Groucho denies having said it, and in any case there's no record of it making it to the air. But - it is such a classic "Groucho" line that it has continued to be attributed to him regardless. Certainly if he didn't say it, he could/should have.

Yeah, I remember reading that he denied saying it, but you're right it's the sort of thing one would expect him to say, if only in private. I remember watching "You Bet Your Life" with him as the emcee back in the day. I can't say I understood all of it, since I was only about 4 to 8 years old during its run, that I remember. But I remember my parents enjoying it. And of course the birdie caught my attention.
