Education thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Part of the issue may be that apparently not everywhere was included. Couldn't find UNC in any list good, bad, even "best campus." But they're still on US News and World Report top university list, at #29 - a drop from several years ago, but still.

"Most Liberal" and "best" are often quite different, but both lists are certainly subjective....

School quality lists can include objective factors like selectivity, faculty-student ratio, test scores, Rhodes scholars, graduation rates, etc. However, "Most Liberal" and "Most Conservative" were bound to be subjective no matter who the judges are.

Which is why Hillsdale (they probably have a class on lying to the media, ranked as less conservative. Hell, their reason for existence is to be the most conservative in everything.

If your 2nd sentence is true, which I think it is, why would the students lie to the media about it? I think it's more likely that the home schooled/xtian madrassa student body is clueless about how extreme they are.

Agreed. Christofascist Hillsdale is in the business of indoctrination and lying. I just don't see them hiding their conservatism. It's the niche they mine for influence and fat cat donations.

Top court stops North Carolina school's skirt dress code for girls

The US Supreme Court has left in place a lower court decision ruling that a North Carolina school cannot require its female students to wear skirts.

A US federal court found last year that the school had violated the constitutional rights of its female pupils with its uniform rules.

The Charter Day school, in the city of Leland, appealed against the ruling all the way to the country's top court.
Leland is on the SE coast, hundreds of miles from me. It's 80% White and Brunswick County is 62% RepuQ.
The justices declined without comment to hear the appeal.

The school's dress code has already been changed to allow girls to wear trousers.

According to court documents, Baker Mitchell, the school's founder, had argued the skirts were intended to maintain "chivalry", describing the word as "a code of conduct where women are regarded as a fragile vessel that men are supposed to take care of and honour".

He added that the policy would ensure female students were treated "courteously and more gently than boys".
:puke-left:
But a group of parents challenged the policy, saying it put their daughters at a disadvantage compared to their male counterparts.

The 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals agreed, finding in June 2022 that the dress code violated the equal protection clause of the Constitution's 14th Amendment, which prevents arbitrarily discriminatory laws from being enacted.

Writing the majority opinion, Senior Circuit Judge Barbara Milano Keenan said Charter Day's dress code could perpetuate "stereotypes with potentially devastating consequences for young girls".

Funded by taxpayers but independently managed, charter schools make up a small fraction of the US school system.
:---P If you want misogynist policy create a private school, slackers. Don't leech off the taxpayers.

 Another boost to UNC's rating, IMO:
UNC to offer free tuition to some students following Supreme Court affirmative action ruling

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will offer free tuition to some in-state students after the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action in admissions, the school announced Friday.

In-state students whose families make less than $80,000 per year will receive free tuition starting with the 2024 incoming class; the average price of tuition at UNC is about $9,000 per year for in-state students.

“We want to make sure students know financial constraints should not stand in the way of their dreams,” Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz said in a statement to students....

“Our responsibility to comply with the law does not mean we will abandon our fundamental values as a university,” he added. “We are and will remain passionately public, and we will ensure that every student who earns admission to Carolina can come here and thrive,” Guskiewicz said.
:happy-cheerleaderkid: That was fast. UNC must have anticipated the ruling and planned for its reaction.
... The rulings were harshly criticized by the academic community and advocates for the Black community; the Congressional Black Caucus called the rulings a “backlash to progress.”

“By delivering a decision on affirmative action so radical as to deny young people seeking an education equal opportunity in our education system, the Supreme Court has thrown into question its own legitimacy,” the group’s statement reads.

Yes, affirmative action was always and is more of a crude tool than a precision instrument, but opponents have offered nothing as a workable replacement. Thus we can only conclude that they either don't care that minority groups get a fair chance or actively want to prevent that. I'll take "actively want to prevent" for $500, Alex.

I think most of the opponents of AA refuse to acknowledge that for a school like UNC that has a 20% selection rate (and even more so for Stanford), that everybody who applies has high SATs, good grades, extracurriculars, yada. So if a white guy/asian guy/hispanic guy gets rejected it isn't necessarily that their spot went to affirmative action Garontee that if all they did was run a lottery of all qualified applicants they'd never have noticeable diversity.

Behind Clay was Martin County, in southeastern Florida, which had 98 books removed.
