Education thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Great minds . . . I almost posted this infuriating story.
Nonbinary teacher at Florida school fired for using 'Mx.' as courtesy title
A Florida state law that went into effect in July 2023 prevents public school teachers from using pronouns that do not align with their sex assigned at birth.

... Vary's termination came as a lawsuit challenging Florida's "Don't Say Gay" law sits in an appeals court and districts struggle to fill vacant teaching positions.

... Vary also recommended "professor," "teacher" and "coach" as alternatives. The school did not permit those either.

... Public schools around the country have struggled to hire teachers, with science being a subject area that has been difficult to staff. In Florida, general science and physical science constituted two of the eight areas with "high demand teacher needs" for the 2023-2024 schoolyear.

Vary said that science classes at FLVS were already waitlisted when they were terminated.
Don’t say "teacher", even though there aren't enough of them. :angry-banghead:
Vary said they felt that school leaders tried to remain neutral in the weeks leading up to their termination. But their final call became heated and Vary said the school hung up on them.

"I recognize that FLVS is in a tough position. They have to uphold Florida State law. At the same time, they're committed to upholding the U.S. Constitution," Vary said. "Right now, those two things are mutually exclusive." ...

32 telephone solicitors today

It just occurred to me that this works right into the plan to end public schools and destroy any education unions. Intentional or not, it’s another shot at teachers. As qualified teachers reject Florida, school performance drops, parents pull students from low performing schools and the Charters come in, many with their minimum wage, high school graduate, “teachers” filling this ever growing void until poof just like Medicare will become private Advantage insurance, so too will our public schools dissolve Charter and Hom sculls. USA, USA, USA!

I've got a 305 Florida mobile and I basically never get solicitation calls and when I rarely get one the phone proclaims it spam. Lady O got on some Repugs list for a while, who kept sending mail to her as "Robert." She kept blocking the numbers and eventually they stopped.

“ PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Pennsylvania school board that banned books, Pride flags and transgender athletes slipped a last-minute item into their final meeting before leaving office, hastily awarding a $700,000 exit package to the superintendent who supported their agenda.”

https://apnews.com/article/moms-for-lib ... c76c769f17

“The district, with about 17,000 students in 23 schools, has spent $1.5 million on legal and public relations fees amid competing lawsuits, discrimination complaints and investigations in the past two years, including a pending suit over its suspension of a middle school teacher who supported LGBTQ and other marginalized students.“

“ Neither Lucabaugh, who skipped the final meeting, nor outgoing board president Dana Hunter returned calls for comment. School board solicitor Jeffrey P. Garton said he was not involved in the severance agreement.

“I didn’t prepare it and gave no legal advice concerning its content,” Garton said in an email.

Some of the incoming Democrats tried to warn the outgoing board that the payout violates a 2012 state law designed to curtail golden parachutes bestowed on school superintendents”

Some said they heard superintendent exclaim, “da law, what, me worry?” I’m a republican.

On the positive side:
But the Democratic majority that swept the conservative Moms For Liberty slate out of office hopes to block the unusual — they say illegal — payout and bring calm to the Central Bucks School District, whose affluent suburbs and bucolic farms near Philadelphia have been roiled by infighting since the 2020 pandemic.

“People are really sick of the embarrassing meetings, the vitriol, they’re tired of our district being in the news for all the wrong reasons. And … the students are aware of what’s been going on, particularly our LGBTQ students and their friends and allies,” said Karen Smith, a Democrat who won a third term on the board....

Only SOME of them will, nttawwt ;)

Speaking of comprehensive education:

Convicted prostitute, current escort removed from Godley ISD groups, including council overseeing Sex-Ed

"Godley", Texas
A woman tasked with helping decide sexual education curriculum in Godley ISD has been removed from multiple positions within the district because she's a convicted prostitute.

A FOX 4 investigation also found she is advertising herself online as an escort....

"We had no idea what was going on in her personal life. She was always very friendly and personable," said Godley ISD School Board trustee Kayla Lain.

A convicted prostitute, actively advertising as an escort, was serving on a council that recommends "appropriate grade levels and methods for human sexuality instruction within Godley ISD."
 She's not even doing the teaching. I think she's highly qualified to advocate for honest and useful instruction.
... SHACs recommend to school boards a wide range of health education protocols for students, including "appropriate grade levels and curriculum for instruction regarding […] sex trafficking."
Point proven. Who would know better?
The spokesperson says Ketcherside's family entered the district this year.

Ketcherside was also selected by Superintendent Rich Dear to the Long Range Facility Planning Committee.

She was a volunteer on the Family and Community Engagement Committee, Parent Teacher Organization and Godley Athletic Booster Club.

Ketcherside also leads a "local cheerleading group," according to Godley ISD.
Excellent, a very involved parent with a flexible <ahem> schedule.
... A LexisNexis public records search reveals one of her email addresses matches the same email address on escort sites for "Lola Brea." ...

Image

Lola Brea's images are found on public websites, some images are too risque to use in our report.
Image
More
... In a statement, Godley ISD tells FOX 4:

"We notified the parent that they will no longer be able to serve on district committees or in other volunteer capacities effective immediately." Godley ISD
 Discrimination against "working" moms :ateeth:
... Her husband, Michael Ketcherside, serves on the Athletic Booster Club and Watch Dogs, a group of fathers who volunteer throughout the school day, according to Godley ISD.

One 2016 court document obtained by FOX 4 claims Michael Ketcherside "is very supportive of her profession."
Probably safer than some of the fathers who volunteer :o
"If that parent feels like I don’t care if my child is around her. We like Mrs. Ketcherside. We like Mr. Ketcherside. We welcome them to our community. That is their choice, but they do need to know this has been a documented part of her life," Lowe (Mary, Families Engaged for Effective Education) said....
That's almost a progressive attitude, almost.

"Godley", Texas  Is that adjacent to Cleanley, Texas?

Johnson County is 3 to 1 RepuQ  :D

The rest of the story:

Mysterious woman tells school board that Scholastic book sparked porn addiction

Summary:
This alleged porn addiction was caused by a book that included "a single kiss." Lanah Burkhardt was 11, her parents never kissed?
She wants a different book published by Scholastic, Drama, restricted because it "includes this image of two people kissing:"
Image

:o HORRORS!
It is unclear how an 11-year-old Burkhardt obtained the Scholastic book that allegedly caused her porn addiction. It appears she was home-schooled.
Opps.
Burkhardt's gambit has already had an impact. The Conroe school board, after listening to her story, voted to restrict access to Drama, the Scholastic book featuring a kiss, from all students in the 8th grade and below. One of the school board members, Melissa Dungan, suggested replacing Scholastic with SkyTree Book Fairs. "All glory to God," Burkhardt posted in response to the news.
 :puke-left:

Turns out that Burkhardt is an employee of Brave Books, a competing RW xtian publisher. Surprise, surprise. Her god loves corrupt dishonesty.

Anyhow, if Burkhardt is so easily turned on and has been that way since she was a tween, I have just one question - Is she single?

My father was a sociology prof and author. I doubt he ever expected to be a victim of RW cancel culture, and he definitely would have objected. It gets worse:

Florida Censors William Shakespeare In Classrooms For Being Too Gay

Not really "Gay", but sexually suggestive.
... Because of Florida's “don’t say gay” law prohibiting sexually explicit classroom materials or topics in schools, students in a Florida district will only read excerpts from Shakespeare’s plays instead of the complete works. This is just one example of the consequences of the law on the state's education curriculum....

In the classic Romeo and Julie, Shakespeare suggests premarital sex between the underage couple, and many other Shakespeare plays use titillating puns and innuendo....
Oh noooes, titillating puns and innuendo :o :angry-banghead:

In further news, it's being proposed that the 'spear' in his name implies a phallus and should be removed. However, 'Shakee' hints at jiggling and twerking. So, he will just be referred to as 'Bill from England'.
