Idiot box thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Investigative journalism at its finest:

Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller

Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller is an original documentary series that explores the complex and dangerous inner-workings of the global underworld, black and informal markets. Each adventure follows Mariana on a mission to follow the chain of custody of trafficked goods, understand how to obtain the contraband, or see the 360-degree view of the trafficking world from the point of view of the smugglers, law enforcement and those caught in the crossfire.
Wiki:
Mariana van Zeller (born May 7, 1976) is a Portuguese journalist and correspondent for National Geographic Channel. She was the chief correspondent for Fusion (until the channel ceased its operations in December 2021), and is a former correspondent for the Vanguard documentary series on the former Current TV. She's a recipient of the Peabody Award.
:-|| Trafficked is an amazing series. Mariana is fearless and somehow gains access to criminals around the world. Her reports are unfailingly captivating, thorough, informative and well-produced. I just finished watching:
S2E10 Fish Pirates
As much as 30% of our seafood has been caught illegally. Mariana searches for the fish pirates who make billions each year while destroying our oceans.
Paraphrase: As bad as illegal fishing is, the real threat to our oceans is legal fishing.

Other topics include:
L.A. Gangs
Terrorist Oil
Tigers and tiger parts

And much more. Episodes are streaming and are broadcast on NatGeo and Vice.

Yeah, I did too, but as a fluke of luck we found it. We also watch "Miss Scarlet and the Duke" that started its season right before.

There’s a new character. He should be fun.

Spoiler:

I figured his character was wrapped up with a bow by his new job/home at the farm. IMDb says just "1 episode", but we'll see.

Aside: Great deal for the farmer, but who's going to help out great g'ma now?
EDIT: Aha, she can move from the slum to the farm and cook and mend for the guys. I'll contact the writers ;)

I didn’t check imbd, but he would make a good replacement for Tristan.

It's been so long since I read the books (all of them) that I don't recall whether Tristan survives the war and returns to the practice or not. No one tell me if you do remember, please.

I hope y’all are watching the new season of Fargo. It t may be the best yet

a bit of music from episode 8

https://youtu.be/JTI8rxAhcsg
It's stunning. Just 2 episodes left :(
Spoiler:

Most predictable would be for Dot to kill the Sheriff. So, what unpredictable thing do you think may happen?
How about the sheriff in a live performance for the Linda’s?
Vrede too wrote:

 That's a good one.
Spoiler:

But I'm still not sure whether the Lindas were real or were just Dot's coma dream. In this last episode original Linda is shown sitting next to Dot in a moving car and then she just disappears :headscratch: Plus, original ( :D , great "debate"!) Sheriff Tillman admitted burying her.

I'm wondering how Minnesota Police Deputy Indira Olmstead, North Dakota Deputy Witt Farr, Deputy Gator Tillman (if even still alive), creepy Ole Munch, the FBI duo and Jennifer Jason Leigh all fit into the finality. One big gunfight? Nah, it'll be more clever than that.
 Maybe even bigger than I imagined. Episode 9 spoilers in the article:

Fargo recap: "The Useless Hand" sets up season 5's violent crescendo
War is on the horizon in a fast-paced penultimate episode

The comments, including some debate, are also illuminating. Episode 10 should be a doozy.
Spoiler:

Dot leaving the rifle behind rankled me, too. It was so glaring that I was distracted.

Season 3 starts on 8/8. First two seasons were great. Season 3 adds Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd.

"They’ve faced serial killers, grave robbers, and personal demons aplenty, but our brave and bold true crime podcasters are up against their biggest problem yet in Only Murders in the Building Season 3. Starring Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short, the Hulu original series returns"

No one?
Still no one?

I noticed that it’s now playing on ABC.
It’s great, if for no other reason than you’ll find yourself liking Martin Short.

Mariska Hargitay Recalls Being Raped By A Friend In Emotional Essay
“I did what I had to do to survive,” the “Law & Order: SVU” star said of her experience.

For the first time, actor Mariska Hargitay is opening up about having been raped in her 30s by a former male friend.
She began 25 years with SVU when she was 34.
... In 2004, Hargitay founded the Joyful Heart Foundation, a New York-based advocacy group for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. Speaking to People in 2020, she said investigating sex crimes as “SVU” character Detective Olivia Benson had endeared her to real-life survivors. “People used to call me the accidental activist,” she told the magazine.

As the public face of the organization, however, the Golden Globe winner recalled giving several speeches in which she denied being a sexual assault survivor herself ― just one example, she noted in her essay this week, of her efforts to minimize the trauma she experienced....

By coming forward about her experience, Hargitay ― who turns 60 this month ― is hoping to encourage fellow rape survivors to “be able to talk about sexual assault the same way they now talk about cancer.”

“Tell someone you’ve survived cancer, and you’re celebrated,” she wrote. “I want the same response for sexual assault survivors. I want no shame with the victim.” ...
I'll leave it to those more qualified to unpack her courageous revelation, but SVU must have been a constant reminder while her experience also empowered her performance.

Billie Sue and I have discussed that her authenticity comes from somewhere.

note: Billie Sue approves of the her new name.
