Local news tonight had a fun feature on the "Ax Thro Co" a venue for engaging in the sport of ax throwing. The owner emphasized that it was a family-friendly place and "kids are welcome." Kids throwing axes - what could go wrong?
https://axethroco.com/

Anyway, turns out that place is just the latest. There are at least three other ax throwing venues in the area. Who knew? Maybe Lady O and I will go try it - definitely if they'll put Trump's face on the target.

Update: At least six places. Organized tournaments, leagues. Like bowling except with axes. The "Battle Axe" is next door to a brewery.

:D Bring you're own, but they've probably got the local PD and Secret Service on speed dial ;) .

If I owned one I would name it Lizzy Borden's  .

We had one open in Pensacola a couple of months ago.

Who knows what I'll get thrown in ads for looking for "buy throwing axe", but this is interesting. Apparently these things are precision made for balance and weight and come in a lot of styles by a lot of manufacturers. And there is a difference in an "axe", a "hatchet" and a "tomahawk." I keep running into things that make me ask "how did I not know about this?"

Speaking of which, how could one live in Florida for decades and not know about the Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park?

My ex-wife's parents would go there in the 40s. It was a popular cooling off spot for students before air-conditioning. They, and probably a lot of UF students, had a bunch of huge sharks teeth and other artifacts they collected, before we knew not to pick up everything.

I've always intended to go, but never made it.

Yeah, I knew about that one, but never went to it. What's so surprising to me when I run across something like that one in Gainesville is that for years we did our camping in a pop-up style camper and went almost exclusively to state parks. So we looked at a lot of "Florida State Parks" websites, got the newsletters, yada, and not to mention having been to Gainesville and surrounding areas many times and never saw even a sign about this place. It's a big world, but still...

It's too bad that so many sites were plundered for treasure and knickknacks. I have boxes of pottery and arrowheads. Some of which should have been left alone or reported - for damn sure that 6 inch spear point I dug out of Jackson's dirt fortification at the battle site of Horseshoe Bend. I was 10 and the scoutmaster was letting us pick stuff up.

Edit
I meant to say, my ex in laws have a huge sharks tooth from the Gainesville site.

Maybe should be in "Can't make this up" but anyway - When you go into the locker room area in the gym we go to, there is a separate section for showers and the toilets. So I go into the toilet section for a whiz and there's this semi-obese guy with shark-white skin covered with back hair standing at the sink. I figure he's one of the "January people" who show up at all gyms right after the holidays, spend a few weeks sweating all over the equipment while they look at their phones, leave their weights all over everywhere and disappear before Valentines. . So I just go on past, do my business and start back out. He's still standing there 'effing shaving and - this is the "can't make it up" part - standing there on the toilet side of the locker room barefooted! Ewwww. I just shook my head, went "Duuuude" and headed back out.

There was a feature on local TV about these people - hangliding with trained falcons. You too can go along for $450 or so.
https://www.flywithabird.com/

We're going to pass on that, but will probably go to the "ground experience" where you get to be a falcon landing strip.

Tonight, 60 Minutes:
South African miners are going ever deeper to find gold, digging some of the world's deepest mines. Scott Pelley goes to the steppes of Mongolia to profile falconer Lauren McGough, an American who has mastered the ancient art of hunting with eagles.
I've seen a different report on her, pretty interesting.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmonton_ ... f_the_name
... In part because they do not use any native imagery in their team identity, the Eskimos are rarely mentioned with regard to the Native American mascot controversy. A notable Inuk who openly supported the team name was Kiviaq, also known as Dave Ward, who was briefly a member of the team but was injured before playing in a regular-season game. However Natan Obed, the President of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, Canada's national Inuit organization, has stated that "Eskimo is not only outdated, it is now largely considered a derogatory term" and is a "relic of colonial power". Former Eskimos player Andre Talbot stated: "Sports organizations need to be community building organizations. And if we're isolating and offending part of that community, then our particular organization or league is not doing its job." After Inuit singer Tanya Tagaq suggested that a name change would show respect, Paula Simons of the Edmonton Journal wrote an editorial pointing out that "Eskimo is a name that never properly belonged to Edmonton at all, a borrowed, appropriated name that disrespects not just the Inuit people, but also the other First Nations who actually did call this territory home". However, in 2017 CBC News reported that other Inuit had no objection to the use of Eskimos in the team's name. The editorial board of the Toronto Star sees a name change as the inevitable result of social evolution.

... Nanook (a polar bear) and Punter (an anthropomorphic football) are the mascots for the Edmonton Eskimos. They were introduced in 1997 and 2004, respectively.

When they're finished with the Eskimos, they'll come after the Redblacks and then the Canucks. Eventually, everyone will have a name like Banana Slugs or Geoducks, and then PETA can take over the offence offensive.

Have you ever considered that this is how certain animals get their bad reputations. Many children develop deep seated fears of animals after suffering through nightmares of 80,000 rabid fans yelling WWWWAAAARRR EAGLE!!!, doing Gator chomps and of buckeyes roasting on an open fire.

Sports would be much better if we simply drew random numbers each season. Problem solved.

It's still the CFL team name. It's the Edmonton Eskimos ice hockey and baseball clubs that folded in the 1920s.

I don't think that PETA cares unless live Banana Slugs or Geoducks are being used as mascots, or are being served at the concessions ;) .

I always thought that "Canuck" was a bit distasteful, but apparently it's "mostly affectionate".

The "Redblacks" got named in 2013 and there's no racial implication. Makes me think of Sandinistas.

Viva.

There was one ethnic controversy with the Redblacks, Big Joe (mascot), but that was a French-English thing and being Canadian they fixed it.
