Single hurricane thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

He may never find the boat.

They're sheltering in the second floor of a neighbors house.

Water is up to their roof.
On the plus side his looters drowned.
Found a new use for his flat screen.

!7 hours for the eye to traverse FL :wtf: . Add the many hours of storm that preceded the eye and the fact that it's still very much battering the NE of the state. :(

Looks like it will pass mostly east of Greenville and Hooterville, almost as far as Charlotte. It'll still be a TS (sustained 39-73 mph) for east of Greenville, TD for east of Hooterville.

First DeSantis, then Ian. At least the damage from Ian can be mostly repaired.

The end half of the Naples Pier is wrecked.

I can't quite verify this, but the House RepuQs were whining about the bill right after DerSantis began his first term. So, very good chance that it's true. Too bad that Floridians would be hurt by rubbing his nose in it. He'll never win in NY or NJ, but maybe the reminder would hurt him in purple PA.

Weather Channel: Six Cat 4 or 5 storms have struck the US in the last 5 years! AFAIK AGW models do not predict more frequent storms, but they do predict that storms will be stronger. Point this out to AGW deniers and they obediently regurgitate that there have always been storms.

Pretty much all of Naples is wrecked.

That shot they keep showing of the electrical fire in front of a place named "Tin City" is on the south side of downtown. Water went in all he way to the airport, the zoo, and the botanical gardens as well as all the neighborhoods all along canals and water areas. All the RV parks were flooded. If we hadn't moved out here, we'd be totally screwed for a place to spend the winter.

You would have had to throw down with all the other folks competing for the few remaining SoFL spots . . . or try Texas. :o

Nope. No Texas. No Arizona, except maybe Yuma. But the problem snowbirds now have with Florida is that there really aren't that many good places to stay for the season, and the ones there are are highway robbery expensive. Lots of nice places for a couple or so weeks at a time, except that now many if not most of those have been damaged. And of course everything was already booked up before the storm anyway. But if you were a snowbird with SW Florida reservations starting in November, for example, you're screwed. We'd have to see if billy.p would let us park in his yard, I guess.

Does he still have one after the downsizing? If so, I'm sure it's perfectly fine, but otherwise you might as well pick Mississippi. :P

My high school home is going to be gone.
Longboat Key, barrier island off of Sarasota.

A whopping three or four feet above sea level.
Ugh, Wiki says "Elevation 3 ft (1 m)", ABC above says storm surge 5-12 feet. Sorry. :(

Scenes from the aftermath of the storm on Longboat Key.
(article and gallery)
When it comes to the aftermath of Hurricane Ian on Longboat Key, most of the effects were visible mid-Key to the south. Although the north portion of the island showed less damage, downed trees and debris lined Gulf of Mexico Drive on Thursday afternoon after crews had worked all day to make sure roads were clear for returning residents.

Residents were allowed back on the island Thursday afternoon, but water and sewer remained off at that time, and much of the Key remained without power.

The signature of the storm was one of wind rather than water, with several large trees uprooted in neighborhoods, on the Key's two golf courses and along its roadways....

One of the Tiki huts from the Longboat Key Club lies in pieces on the beach in front of the club Thursday afternoon.

Oh no, not the Tiki hut!

No word on the GoCubsGo statue in front of the high school.

They skated the worst. Being as far north of the eye they didn't have surge, they had the opposite.

Sarasota and Tampa Bay actually drained.

I did hear my statue washed out to sea. You now need special skills to see me.

They lost the house (no word on the boat or flat screen).

Their plan is to rent, rebuild, sell and move to North Carolina.

Some acquaintance recently moved a little north of fort Meyers along the coast. Wonder if their house is alright. They're ok, but judging from the news their house isn't.

Not the town, but a timelapse of Ian 😮

The governor is definitely against handouts so save your money.
Hope that ppl in the car got out alright
Yeah, where were they going at the last minute?
I feel like I should introduce the Floridians to the Dutch.

2:15 EDT landfall near Georgetown, SC. Now going to pass well east of Charlotte, hitting more populous NC and largely leaving me alone. About 1" of rain anticipated, has not begun yet. That will be my Ian experience.
