Trump Administration* - Fired / Quit

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

'I wish you the best': US military adviser resigns after Trump's controversial photo op at church

A Department of Defense adviser has resigned, effective immediately, from the military's science board, citing what he believed to be a violation of conduct from Secretary of Defense Mark Esper.

In his resignation letter to Esper, which was obtained by The Washington Post, James Miller Jr., who served as the US undersecretary of defense for policy from 2012 to 2014, recalled that he swore an oath of office to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States" and "to bear true faith and allegiance to the same," similar to what the defense secretary had done before he took office.

"On Monday, June 1, 2020, I believe that you violated that oath," Miller wrote to Esper....
Law-abiding protesters just outside the White House were dispersed using tear gas and rubber bullets — not for the sake of safety, but to clear a path for a presidential photo op. You then accompanied President Trump in walking from the White House to St. John's Episcopal Church for that photo.

"You may not have been able to stop President Trump from directing this appalling use of force, but you could have chosen to oppose it. Instead, you visibly supported it.

"You must have thought long and hard about where that line should be drawn. I must now ask: If last night's blatant violations do not cross the line for you, what will?

"Unfortunately, it appears there may be few if any lines that President Trump is not willing to cross, so you will probably be faced with this terrible question again in the coming days. You may be asked to take, or to direct the men and women serving in the US military to take, actions that further undermine the Constitution and harm Americans.

"I wish you the best, in very difficult times. The sanctity of the US Constitution, and the lives of Americans, may depend on your choices."

Not worth looking up, but esper is claiming that he thought they were going to look at some damage and that he had nooooooo idea there would be a photo op.

Trump Wanted to Fire Esper Over Troops Dispute
Defense secretary’s stand against using federal troops to quell protests over George Floyd’s killing prompted president’s plan to remove him

Trump Government Departures Tracker spreadsheet - 524 so far.
It might be there somewhere, but I'm not sure who owns this and who is authorized to edit it. Seems like a good starting point or adjunct for further research.

Trump’s New Media Chief Axes Agency Heads, Installs Loyalists
PURGE

President Trump’s newly appointed chief of federally funded media operations fired the heads of at least three organizations Wednesday in a move critics fear heralds the end of independent news coverage. Michael Pack, the new CEO of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, sent out notices on Wednesday night announcing the firings. Among the heads of agencies on the chopping block were Radio Free Asia’s Bay Fang, Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe’s Jamie Fly, and Middle East Broadcasting Network’s Alberto Fernandez, according to the Associated Press. The purging of top officials has raised concerns that Pack, a conservative filmmaker, could turn the media organizations into mouthpieces for Trump, who repeatedly attacked Voice of America on Twitter before the White House bizarrely accused the news outlet of spreading Chinese propaganda in April. In announcing the reshuffling on Wednesday, Pack reportedly also stated that he had gotten rid of the current members of the agencies’ respective boards and replaced them with his own team.

Mary Elizabeth Taylor: Senior state department official resigns over Trump's response to anti-racism protests
President's actions 'cut sharply against my core values and conviction,' says first black woman to serve as assistant secretary of state for legislative affairs

... "Moments of upheaval can change you, shift the trajectory of your life, and mould your character," she wrote, The Post reports. "The President's comments and actions surrounding racial injustice and Black Americans cut sharply against my core values and convictions."

... James Miller, a member of the Defence Science Board and a previous member of Barack Obama's administration, resigned following Mr Trump's photo op in which he held a bible outside St John's Church after law enforcement fired tear gas and pepper spray at protesters to clear the president's path.

Her exit from the Trump administration on Thursday also follows the resignations of two Pentagon officials this week: foreign policy official Kathryn Wheelbarger and acting comptroller Elaine McCusker.

Prior to her White House roles, she worked in Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's office.

She aided in the confirmations of Mr Pompeo, US Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch, and CIA director Gina Hapsel.

The Post reports that Ms Taylor told her State Department staff on 3 June, days following the killing of Mr Floyd in Minneapolis, that her heart "is broken, in a way from which I've had to heal it countless times."

She said his "horrific murder and the recent deaths of other Black Americans have shaken our nation at its core. Every time we witness these heinous, murderous events, we are reminded that our country's wounds run deep and remain untreated ... For our team members who are hurting right now, please know you are not alone. You are seen, recognised, heard, and supported. I am right here with you."

Holy crap.
More info:
Geoff Berman

... When Trump and Barr sought to oust Berman, he was reportedly investigating Rudolph W. Giuliani, a Trump associate.

... On August 8, 2018, U.S. Representative Chris Collins (R-NY), his son Cameron, and the father of Cameron’s fiancée, Stephen Zarsky, were arrested by the FBI and charged with insider trading and making false statements by Berman. Following the charges, House Speaker Paul Ryan kicked Collins off of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and Collins suspended his reelection campaign. Collins subsequently plead guilty to insider trading and lying to the FBI and was sentenced to 26 months imprisonment.

... On November 26, 2018, Berman announced the indictment of former Honduran Congressman Tony Hernandez on drug trafficking and weapons charges. Tony Hernandez is the brother of Honduras President Juan Orlando Hernandez. On October 18, 2019, Tony Hernandez was convicted at trial.

... In April 2019, Berman brought the first ever drug trafficking charges against a pharmaceutical company and two of its executives, charging Rochester Drug Co-Operative and its former CEO, Laurence Doud III, with illegally conspiring to distribute oxycodone and fentanyl and conspiring to defraud the DEA. In announcing the charges, Berman said “This prosecution is the first of its kind: executives of a pharmaceutical distributor and the distributor itself have been charged with drug trafficking, trafficking the same drugs that are fueling the opioid epidemic that is ravaging our country. Our Office will do everything in its power to combat this epidemic, from street-level dealers to the executives who illegally distribute drugs from their boardrooms.”

... In July 2019, Berman charged financier Jeffrey Epstein with sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of minors. Berman said at his press conference: "The alleged behavior shocks the conscience. And while the charged conduct is from a number of years ago, it is still profoundly important to the many alleged victims, now young women. They deserve their day in court, and we are proud to stand up for them in bringing this indictment.” Berman's prosecution resurfaced then-Labor Secretary Alex Acosta's handling of Epstein's sex traffic case a decade earlier. On July 12, Acosta resigned amid pressure from the case.

On August 10, 2019, Epstein was found dead in his cell of an apparent suicide. Berman stated: "Today's events are disturbing, and we are deeply aware of their potential to present yet another hurdle to giving Epstein's many victims their day in Court. To those brave young women who have already come forward and to the many others who have yet to do so, let me reiterate that we remain committed to standing for you, and our investigation of the conduct charged in the Indictment - which included a conspiracy count - remains ongoing."

On October 9, 2019, Berman announced charges against Lev Parnas, Igor Fruman and two others for campaign violations relating to the illegal use of straw donors and foreign money. Berman said: "They sought political influence not only to advance their own financial interests but to advance the political interests of at least one foreign official - a Ukrainian government official who sought the dismissal of the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine". Berman said that the investigation is continuing.

... On April 30, 2020, Berman announced drug trafficking and weapons charges against Juan Carlos “The Tiger” Bonillo, the former head of the Honduras National Police. Berman stated that the indictment alleged that Bonillo conspired with convicted former Honduran congressman Tony Hernandez and his brother the president of Honduras.

On April 30, 2020, Berman announced a deferred prosecution agreement against Bank Hapoalim, Israel’s largest bank, for conspiring to hide assets and income in offshore accounts. Bank Hapoalim agreed to pay nearly $875 million. Berman said: “Israel’s largest bank, Bank Hapoalim, and its Swiss subsidiary have admitted not only failing to prevent but actively assisting U.S. customers to set up secret accounts, to shelter assets and income, and to evade taxes. The combined payment approaching $1 billion reflects the magnitude of the tax evasion by the Bank’s U.S. customers, the size of the fees the Bank collected to provide this illegal service, and the gravity of the illegal conduct.”

... On June 19, 2020, Attorney General William Barr announced that Berman would step down from his position. It was announced that President Trump intended to nominate Jay Clayton, the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, to take Berman's place as the Manhattan U.S. attorney and Barr said Trump, on his recommendation, appointed Craig Carpenito, the U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey, to serve as the acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York while the Senate takes up Clayton's nomination. However, Berman denies having resigned and states that he has "no intention of resigning." As Berman was appointed by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York under 28 U.S.C. Section 546(d), it is unclear whether the Attorney General can remove Berman as US Attorney without a Senate-confirmed successor.
Lots, lots more at the link, including many actions that would please cons. I just copied the things that seemed might be relevant to this disputed "resignation" or that otherwise caught my eye.

Is this about stymieing 1/21/21 prosecutions? Is there any doubt?

FU, PINO and his personal attorney, Barr.

DOJ tries to oust US attorney investigating Trump allies

... A senior Justice Department official said the department was pressing forward with its plans and will have Craig Carpenito, the U.S. attorney in New Jersey, take over the office temporarily, starting on July 3.
Could be an interesting day unless the courts have ruled.

The article mentions several things that I excerpted from Wiki. I did not include this one since I wasn't sure if it might be relevant:
... Attention refocused on the Southern District this week after news organizations, including The Associated Press, obtained copies of Bolton's tell-all book. Bolton alleges in the book that Trump sought to cut a deal to stop federal prosecutors in New York from investigating whether Halkbank violated U.S. sanctions against Iran in order to free an American pastor imprisoned in Turkey.

Six weeks after the pastor’s release, Bolton writes that on a call with the Turkish president,“Trump then told Erdoğan he would take care of things, explaining that the Southern District prosecutors were not his people, but were Obama people, a problem that would be fixed when they were replaced by his people.”
Whoa.

I don't think this is in the Wki article:
... His office subpoenaed Trump’s inaugural committee for a wide range of documents as part of an investigation into various potential crimes, including possible illegal contributions from foreigners to inaugural events....
