In Memoriam

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I can't find that we posted about it here :headscratch: , but IIRC Gavin has said that he would appoint a Black woman and that it would not be a declared candidate. This latter qualifier has pissed off Barbara Lee, but I think it's reasonable in a closely contested race. Let the voters decide without the Gov putting his thumb on the scale.

Edit:  You added the tweet while I was composing and Ron Filipkowski and I used the exact same metaphor! Great minds . . .

Who will replace Dianne Feinstein in the Senate?
It will be up to California Gov. Gavin Newsom to decide who fills Feinstein's seat.

... But as Feinstein’s retirement loomed, with the importance of Black women to the Democratic coalition as apparent as ever after the 2020 election, Newsom said in 2021 he would appoint a Black woman, should the Feinstein seat open up.

As Feinstein’s health declined over the first half of 2023, Black leaders in California made clear that they expected Newsom to make good on his promise, should the seat become available.

One obvious choice for Newsom is Rep. Lee, who is Black, but appointing her could lead to charges that Newsom is trying to influence the 2024 election by endowing her with the power of incumbency.

He has tried to resolve the problem by saying he would appoint a “caretaker” to serve out Feinstein’s term, leaving Lee, Porter and Schiff to battle for the seat next year.

Lee has criticized the plan, arguing that the Black woman chosen by Newsom would represent a “token replacement,” a placeholder with little effective power (other senators aren’t likely to take a new arrival who is already a lame duck very seriously, and influence in the chamber takes years to accrue)....

Several names have been floated, including San Francisco Mayor London Breed, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Secretary of State Shirley Weber.

I like that idea, actually. Solves a lot of issues.
Then Biden resigns and "Newson" is incumbent. With Taylor Swift as VP.

In case anyone needed a reminder of how brutal the game can be especially for past generations.
Injuries sustained during Butkus's playing career compounded with time. He had his knee replaced with a metal unit. An osteotomy left him with one leg one-and-a-half inches shorter than the other, which affected his hips, back, and neck. Around 2002, nerve damage in his spine caused him to develop foot drop. He lost strength in his hands, needing both to lift a coffee cup.[6] Still, Butkus maintained that football had a largely positive impact on his life, and that its benefits should not be overlooked.

:( As well as from the article I linked:
... Hall of Fame defensive end Deacon Jones once called Butkus a "maniac" and "well-conditioned animal." Butkus appeared to want to send a message with every tackle.

"I want to just let 'em know that they've been hit, and when they get up, they don't have to look to see who it was that hit 'em," Butkus once told NFL Films. "It shouldn't be any puzzle. When they come to, they gotta say, 'It must've been Butkus that got me.'"

In a game against the rival Green Bay Packers during the 1970 season, Butkus and teammate Willie Holman hit quarterback Bart Starr so hard that Starr lost his helmet and began walking toward the wrong bench.

Said the Chicago Tribune: Starr "looked like Oscar Bonavena after Cassius Clay had finished with him." ...

Neither a relapse or a cardio issue would be surprising.

R.I.P. Night Court star Richard Moll
Moll played bailiff Bull Shannon on all 9 seasons of the NBC hit

:(

And then there were two.
Judge Harry T. Stone, died 2018
Public defender Christine Sullivan, died 2021
Court clerk Mac Robinson, died 2021
Prosecutor Dan Fielding, 75, stars in the new series
Bailiff Roz Russell, 69, still acting, appearance in the new series

Also:
Mel Tormé, died 1999
John Astin, Harry's biological father, as well as Gomez Addams, 93!

More great cast:

I'd forgotten about some of them like Brent Spiner (Data), 74

:D Clever, they could use a writer like you.

I think it's okay and still watch if nothing else is on. The critics like it:
... William Hughes of The A.V. Club gave the series a B and said, "If you're curious about it, don't let the pilot throw you off, at least; check back in a few episodes later, once the show has actually hit its (often pretty funny) comedic stride."
Did you give it a fair shot? It was renewed for a 2nd season, so someone is watching. I wonder if old farts like us tend to like it for nostalgia's sake or tend to hate it due to comparing it with one of the funniest shows ever.

Sympathies to his family - maybe for having to put up with him over the years.
But the world will be no worse off without him.
