Failed prohibition

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

The recreational cannabis referendum is not technically binding and would have to be followed by legislation, though the Tribal Council has already signaled its support for the change.
Still has to be approved. But likely will it sounds like. Bet there's gonna be lots of police right outside the borders trying to nab people.
It's almost here, hopefully late Jan dispensing. First medical:

NC resident medical marijuana cards to be issued soon by Eastern Band of Cherokee

My liberal MD will likely play along, without even having to be dishonest. NC residents only, sorry Whack9. Recreational sales to follow, not sure if that will also be NC residents only.

I feel like legalization in other states has flooded the black market with some high quality, reasonably priced, stuff.

Still prefer it to be legal though. Way less hassle/worries.

NJ's dispensaries are ridiculously expensive though.

That's a shame. Since so much of the black market has been cornered by cartels and other shady characters, unless one knows the grower or the grower's pipeline, I won't mind paying SOME premium for legal pot. I can always lobby for decent pricing. We'll see. I also hope that I'll be able to buy an ounce or more at a time so that the trips to the Rez are rare. It won't be legal once I leave the Rez :( :ateeth:

I'm curious to see how it's going to play out with it legal in Cherokee and illegal elsewhere in the state. I wonder if state troopers are gonna be harassing people leaving the reservation.

Hopefully this will spearhead legalization in NC

With 3 season tourism and 4 season casino traffic there would be a lot of pushback to that. I have wondered if they'll monitor the dispensary, but that would piss off the tribe and would possibly be illegal.
Hopefully this will spearhead legalization in NC
Fingers crossed, but we're to the red side of purple these days :angry-banghead:

Ohio just voted to legalize recreational via ballot initiative. The citizens overwhelmingly voted to legalize.

Not so fun fact: NC and SC don't allow ballot initiatives.

It's an Xmas miracle!
Biden pardons marijuana use nationwide. Here's what that means

President Joe Biden announced Friday he's issuing a federal pardon to every American who has used marijuana in the past, including those who were never arrested or prosecuted.

The sweeping pardon applies to all U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents in possession of marijuana for their personal use and those convicted of similar federal crimes. It also forgives pot users in the District of Columbia.

It does not apply to individuals who have been jailed for selling the drug, which is illegal under federal law, or other marijuana offenses such as driving under the influence of an illegal substance.
It should, next step?
The implication of Biden's pardon promises to have significant implications, as criminal records for marijuana use and possession have imposed barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities.
Among these, the pardoned will now be able to own and work at legal dispensaries. Yippie!
However, the pardons do not apply to people who violated state law, and anyone who wants to receive proof of a pardon will have to apply through the Department of Justice.
Many many more have been busted under state law than have been by the feds :(
Image

Biden issued a similar pardon last year and promised future reforms. This year's proclamation went further in that it forgave all instances of simple marijuana use or possession under federal law, including for individuals who have never been charged. It also expands Biden's previous directive to include minor marijuana offenses committed on federal property.
Hey, the never been charged federal property offenders includes me. 8-)
The White House says thousands of people with federal and district convictions will be eligible for the pardons, which Biden announced three days before the Christmas holiday.

In a statement, Biden said Americans should not be sent to prison solely for using or possessing marijuana. He urged governors to forgive state offenses.

"Criminal records for marijuana use and possession have imposed needless barriers to employment, housing, and educational opportunities. Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana. It’s time that we right these wrongs," Biden said.

Biden also commuted the sentences of 11 people he said are "serving disproportionately long sentences for nonviolent drug offenses" and would have received lesser sentences if they were charged today.
Image
... The American Civil Liberties Union’s Cynthia W. Roseberry, director of the organization's Justice Division, said in a statement that Biden's actions "send a strong message about the power of redemption" and will help to correct past injustices.

But, she said, Congress must change the law to prevent future Justice Department from revoking Biden's directive not to pursue higher sentences for crack offenses.

... The Biden administration recommended that the DEA reschedule marijuana use to a lower offense earlier this year.

A record 70% of Americans said in an October survey conducted by Gallup that marijuana use should be legalized. It is favored by a majority of Republicans. And it is highly popular among the liberals, Democrats and young Americans whom Biden hopes to inspire to vote for his reelection.

Recreational marijuana use is legal in 24 states and the District of Columbia. Medical marijuana is now widely allowed in the U.S. It is legal in 38 states.

I've long said I feel fortunate to have lived most of my life in places where other people go on vacation, but also fortunate to have lived mostly in places where enforcement of personal pot usage laws was pretty lax. At least for white sorta-yuppie type people. But it's incredible to think that 40-50 years ago we were sure that "soon" marijuana would be legal, or at least universally de-criminalized. Personal use of small amounts turned into basically a traffic fine in several states, including North Carolina. Whoda thunk the present NC would be a leader in drug law reform? But that was long ago and efforts stalled and grass remained fundamentally illegal for decades despite the high percentage of people who used or had used (whether or not they inhaled). Nobody ever came up with the data to prove "Reefer Madness" had any basis in fact; nobody found people dying from overdose of pot; nobody found people going on violent crime sprees because they were high on pot. The vast majority of pot users did not go on to be heroin addicts. Yet despite all that, and despite the lessons that should have been learned during Prohibition, pot remained illegal. It's a strange country.

Makes one think that there were other goals like:
Support and protection for Big Pharma;
Intervention in other countries;
Shredding the Constitution;
Maintenance of the prison-industrial complex;
Racial repression.

All of these have been raging successes.

Thank you for your service honoring America and the freedoms it stands for. Ironic that Tricky Dick would so soon get caught dishonoring America and then have to resign in disgrace.

dick nixon held his National Honor America Day event to an almost totally bused-in audience of 4H Clubs and junior rotc warriors-to-be from all over the country. There were some who came on their own to hear Bob Hope as head cheerleader perform his It’s a Fun War routine and possibly an even smaller band of die hard republicans there to see their president dick. dick canceled last minute over security concerns; large scale police action against the First Annual D.C Smoke-In citizens had started at about 10 p.m. the night before.
He did appear by live video projected onto a movie screen.

I think we had the larger crowd, but that was from where I was standing and the tear gas may have affected the counting.

They were facing the Memorial, while we dirty hippies were more concentrated around the Monument and pretty much everywhere else.

I heard that it was the Jefferson Airplane who provided the truly amazing pot, but I don’t really know. It was late morning when people appeared in the trees with boxes shaped like pirate treasure chests maybe 8x12 at the base and 8 high and started throwing handfuls of joints pre-rolled in the first ever American flag papers.
In spite of the best efforts of dick and leo to ruin our party, great fun was had by all.
And
Here’s all Wikipedia had to say under Honor America Day
“Some people saw it as a political pro war rally and protested by jumping in the pool and chanting antiwar slogans.”

How dare they call us “some people”.

Here’s all that they said about the First Smoke-In
“The first YIP smoke-in was attended by 25,000 in Washington, D.C., on July 4, 1970. There was a culture clash when many of the hippie protesters strolled en masse into the nearby "Honor America Day" festivities with Billy Graham and Bob Hope.”

I’ve seen 88,000 people often enough to say without question that the dirty hippie side of the crowd was well over a hundred thousand; anyway, “25,000 “is a better mention than “some people”.

 Thank you for your service. Ethical lawbreaking is a tough job, but someone has to do it. 54 years later:

Failed prohibition
NC FREEDOM DAY!
NC’s first marijuana dispensary set to open in Cherokee. Mark your calendar for ... 420

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in western North Carolina has set an opening date for the only dispensary in the state to legally buy marijuana.

In a historic vote on Sept. 7, 2023, tribal members overwhelmingly approved adult use of marijuana on tribal land. The tribe on the 57,000-acre Qualla Boundary had already approved the use and controlled sale of medical cannabis.

The tribe plans to open the dispensary on April 20, Lee Griffin, human resources director for the tribe’s cannabis subsidiary, Qualla Enterprises LLC, told the tribal council during a council work session on Wednesday.

April 20 is recognized by marijuana users and producers as the national cannabis holiday.

Image
A hoop house is teeming with flowering cannabis plants on a farm owned and operated by Qualla Enterprises, LLC in Cherokee, NC. Cannabis plants reach the flowering stage after eight to eleven weeks. Once the plant is fully mature, it is harvested and stored in a climate controlled room to dry.

And North Carolina residents and others who want to buy products at the dispensary won’t need a cannabis card from the tribe’s Cannabis Control Board, Griffin said.

That’s because the tribe intends to open the dispensary for adult use, no longer limiting sales to buyers with medical conditions that marijuana can help treat, he said.

Where is the Cherokee dispensary?

The dispensary is in the tribe’s massive, refurbished old bingo hall on U.S. 19 near Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort, 46 miles west of Asheville in the Great Smoky Mountains....

That's actually pretty cool, wonder how the rest of the state is going to react?

Athough if you travel there and take it off the reservation aren't you immediately committing a crime?

FWIW, I bought $60 worth of flower three years ago, I still have some left. I honestly don't enjoy it that much anymore. It literally takes a micro dose to fuck me up. Cops will whine, the rest of the state won't care . . . except to come shopping.

Although if you travel there and take it off the reservation aren't you immediately committing a crime?

Sure, but with all the casino and other tourist traffic they can't do random hassling. They could surveil the dispensary and bust those people at the border, but that will really piss off the tribe.

FWIW, I bought $60 worth of flower three years ago, I still have some left. I honestly don't enjoy it that much anymore. It literally takes a micro dose to fuck me up. Gotta be focused to watch Survivor :P

Pssst, don't tell Whack9 or neoplacebo, but I've also really cut back without trying to. I did fire up a bowl in celebration of my post above and in time for Ghosts. It was great. Maybe on 4/21 I'll restock and get some gummies for trying out.

I've always had pleasant dealers, but you never know if it's cartel-controlled higher up . . . or sometimes I did know :( I'm just thrilled that I can now drive just eighty minutes for a locally grown legal buy. Idk if the tribe will be greedy, but I'd even pay a premium for that. I'll probably get a bit more than I need just to support the endeavor 8-)

Don’t you love it when “tribal members overwhelmingly approved” of an evil schedule #1 Super Baddest drug ever in the History of the World.

Or could it be that the evil comes from the clueless ignorance of the nancy reagan types in their quest for relevance?

Considering -

https://www.aclu.org/gallery/marijuana-arrests-numbers

“According to the ACLU’s original analysis,

marijuana arrests now account for over half of all drug arrests in the United States.

Of the 8.2 million marijuana arrests between 2001 and 2010, 88% were for simply having marijuana.

Despite roughly equal usage rates, Blacks are 3.73 times more likely than whites to be arrested for marijuana.“

Let this sink in

According to nancy assaulting approximately one million American households every year over small amounts of pot is part of the Wonderful War on Drugs. - when will those negras learn proper behavior say the alcoholics at the Whites Preferred Country Club

Run those numbers out to our one hundred year war against pot.
It’s sickening

How far is that from neoplacebo's place?
Bout a hundred miles.
I get 132 miles - 2.5 hours, or 45 minutes the way he drives  , or about one century looking at it a different way.

I think he has local sales and/or Virginia dispensaries that are closer. I PMed him anyhow, just in case.
