Now, it is true that the Union excursion through Georgia was primarily commanded by Sherman. However US Grant was aware of and approved of Sherman's campaign.
When I visited Georgia a few decades ago, I drove from a suburb of Atlanta to Savannah, along pretty much the same route that Sherman took. It was a broad front. There wasn't much to see along the way, although I did spy a cop who resembled something from a comedy show jump up and get all flustered as I blew through (at the speed limit) some podunk town along the way. Savannah itself is a lovely old town and I'm glad its mayor opted to give Sherman the keys to the city rather than see it devasted like the rest.
