As the nation celebrates Juneteenth, it’s time to get rid of these three myths about slavery



Temple “Tempie” Cummins stoically stares at the camera with her arms folded in her lap, sitting stiffly in a chair in her dusty, barren backyard with her weather-beaten wooden shack behind her. Her dark, creased face reflects years of poverty and worry.

The faded black and white image of Cummins from 1937 was snapped by a historian who stopped by her home in Jasper, Texas, to ask her about her childhood during slavery. Cummins, who did not know her exact age, shared stories of uninterrupted woe until she recounted how she and her mother discovered that they had been freed.

She said her mother, a cook for their former slave owner’s family, liked to hide in the chimney corner to eavesdrop on dinner conversations. One day in 1865, she overheard her owner say that slavery had ended, but he wasn’t going to let his slaves know until they harvested “another crop or two.”

“When mother heard that she say she slip out the chimney corner and crack her heels together four times and shouts, ‘I’s free, I’s free,’ ” Cummins told the historian, who recorded her story for a New Deal writers’ project that collected the narratives of the formerly enslaved during the Great Depression. “Then she runs to the field, ‘gainst marster’s will and tol’ all the other slaves and they quit work.” ...

Shooting at Asheville Juneteenth Festival cancels 2nd day at Pack Square; suspect charged

A shooting June 17 at the end of the city's Juneteenth Festival prompted the cancellation of the planned second day of the festival at Pack Square Park downtown.

Asheville Police Department charged a 16-year-old with two counts of felonious assault with deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, Capt. Joseph Silberman said in a noon June 18 news release. Police did not release the name of the arrestee because the suspect is a juvenile.

According to the news release, reports of shots fired came in around 8:51 p.m. June 17. Officers found two juveniles with gunshot wounds, and they were transported to Mission Hospital with serious injuries, the news release said. One has been released, and the other remained in critical but stable condition....

Florida recognizes three Confederate holidays as ‘official’ state holidays, but not Juneteenth

While federal workers have the day off in recognition of Juneteenth, state workers in Florida do not.

Juneteenth was recognized by Florida as a day of special observance back in the 1990's, but it isn’t recognized as an official state holiday....

At the same time, Florida does recognize some controversial state holidays including the birthdays of Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis along with Confederate Memorial Day....

Ftr, NC recognizes Martin Luther King, Jr's Birthday, but not Juneteenth, Columbus Day or any slaver/traitor holidays.

Statutory holidays

Confederate Memorial Day is a statutory holiday in Alabama on the fourth Monday in April, in Mississippi on the final Monday in April, and in South Carolina on May 10. In all of these states, state offices are closed on this day.

In Georgia, the fourth Monday in April was formerly celebrated as Confederate Memorial Day, but beginning in 2016, in response to the Charleston church shooting, the names of Confederate Memorial Day and Robert E. Lee's Birthday were struck from the state calendar and the statutory holidays were designated simply as "state holidays". Florida also continues to officially designate Confederate Memorial Day on the fourth Monday in April, although state offices remain open.

North Carolina also designates the holiday on May 10, although state offices remain open and localities may choose whether to observe it.

In June 2022, the Louisiana State Legislature voted to remove Confederate Memorial Day, as well as Robert E. Lee Day, from the state's calendar of official holidays.

Tennessee

In Tennessee, the governor is required by law to proclaim Confederate Decoration Day each June 3.

Texas

In Texas, Robert E. Lee's birthday (January 19th) was made a state holiday in 1931. In 1973, "Lee Day" was renamed "Confederate Heroes Day", consolidating it with a holiday celebrating Jefferson Davis and putting it the day after Martin Luther King Day. The official state description of the holiday states it is held "in honor of Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and other Confederate heroes;". State offices remain open but employees may have an optional day off.

A Confederate memorial in America's most honoured cemetery is coming down. But what should be done with it?

... Some 377 memorials have been renamed or removed since 2015. But as of 2022, some 723 remain, according to a report by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Hundreds more roads, schools and parks named after Confederate leaders also remain.

... As the violence unfolded in Charlottesville, Ms Ezekiel called her relatives. "What can we do about Moses Ezekiel's monument in Arlington?" she asked.

Her distant cousin had fought for the Confederacy. He was determined to build a monument to correct what he believed were "lies" told about the South.

His statue features a stereotypical depiction of a black woman, handing a baby to a southern soldier. Scholars view it as an artistic representation of the once popular idea that the war was a "lost cause", not about slavery, but instead a just fight for state's rights. Historians now largely view this explanation for the war as a myth, spread to cast the Confederacy in an honourable light, and to mask the brutality of the country's slave-owning past.

Within days, a public letter signed by Ms Ezekiel and dozens more relatives of the sculptor appeared in the Washington Post. Moses Ezekiel's family wanted his famous Confederate memorial removed.

"Like most such monuments, this statue intended to rewrite history to justify the Confederacy and the subsequent racist Jim Crow laws. It glorifies the fight to own human beings, and, in its portrayal of African Americans, implies their collusion.

"As proud as our family may be of Moses's artistic prowess, we — some twenty Ezekiels — say remove that statue. Take it out of its honored spot in Arlington National Cemetery and put it in a museum that makes clear its oppressive history."

... Once it is removed, what becomes of it is unclear: an NBC report from 2020 states that of 130 monuments removed, just 35 were moved to new homes - often museums or Confederate cemeteries. The remainder likely end up in storage, as none come forward to take them.

"I don't like it artistically. But, you know, it can't be denied that he was a great sculptor."

This is the guy I mentioned. This swing on a White man may or may not be justified, I'd have to review the video. It's after this that he moves left and whacks a defenseless woman seated on the dock and then is rapidly cuffed.

The Reason Black Folks Are Rejoicing Over The Montgomery Brawl Is More Complicated Than You Think
When Black people are brutalized by white folks on camera, the results are usually very different.

... Justice for us is a rarity and often when we try to achieve it, we are victim-blamed and held responsible for our own demise. What we saw in Montgomery was not just an incredible show of unity amongst Black people, but the opposite of what we are used to seeing. This time when a Black man was being attacked by white people, he—and folks who stepped in on his behalf—fought back.

This is vital in both a broader historical context as well as a more localized one. As Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones pointed out: “If you understand the history of Montgomery — one of the most prolific slave-trading cities in the U.S. turned brutally repressive apartheid regime after, and majority Black but JUST got its first Black mayor — it gives so much more perspective to this video.”

Black folks have been cutting up ever since we got wind of what went down in Montgomery and for good reason. We live in a society that will do whatever it takes to uphold white supremacy and the violence that comes along with it. What happened at the dock that day reminded us that there is power in community and simply that Black folks have had enough.

I remember when someone said "this wouldn't have happened if they would have just complied."

This was true in this situation, just move your little boat and everyone would have gone home happy.

I'm just proud of the fact that they had a brawl with no gunfire. That in itself is a milestone for America.

No one should be treated that way for doing their job. The people who attacked this man should be punished to fullest extent of the law.

The horror when bystanders stop being bystanders and start helping especially their own. Reality sets in for the attackers upon realizing they're not as dominant as they thought they were.

I just watched the Press conference, and the black man is the co-captain of the river boat. The river boat was actually waiting 45 minutes for the owners of the small boat to return so they could dock. When they didn't see the owners of the small boat, the co-captain went to see if he could shift the small boat and the rest is as seen on multiple videos. This is just a case of plain entitlement because they knew the space was reserved for the river boat. Well, they have to deal with the consequences now.
