Woman accused of assaulting teen over iPhone claims to be victim

The woman who falsely accused the 14-year-old son of jazz musician Keyon Harrold of stealing her iPhone and assaulting him is claiming she is the actual victim....

At one point, the woman claimed that she was the one assaulted despite the video uploaded by Harrold Sr. appearing to show her lunge at his son. CNN reported that the woman stopped responding to texts and messages after requesting proof of her allegations....

“After we were able to get video,” Rodney Harrison, the NYPD chief of detectives, said at a news briefing. “we’re now looking to charge this individual with assault and maybe even look at grand larceny or maybe even attempted robbery.” ...

Woman pleads guilty to hate crime after wrongly accusing Black teen of stealing phone

The California woman dubbed "SoHo Karen" after she wrongly accused a Black teenager of stealing her cellphone in New York City has pleaded guilty to a hate crime charge, officials said Monday.

Miya Ponsetto, 23, has admitted to unlawful imprisonment "as a hate crime" but can plead again and have the charge reduced to misdemeanor aggravated harassment if she steers clear of any trouble for two years, Manhattan prosecutors said.

A viral video showed Ponsetto lunging at, tackling and shouting at Keyon Harrold Jr., then 14, whom she accused, with no evidence, of taking her iPhone....

It was later discovered that Ponsetto, who is white, left her phone in an Uber vehicle, and the device was returned to her. The incident has been held up as a symbol of racial profiling....

Ben Crump, a lawyer for the teen, said in a statement that it was "highly disappointing" that Ponsetto will receive only probation.

"We won't change the culture until we hold people accountable for their outrageously bad behavior," he said....

If Ponsetto does not comply with her terms of probation, she could face 1⅓ to 4 years in state prison, prosecutors said.

Okay, but there should be community service with a poverty or criminal justice org serving a largely Black population.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office sent The Daily Beast an incident report Tuesday that said Madelein Kelly and her unidentified partner, both from New Jersey, were escorted off the JetBlue flight and out of the West Palm Beach Airport on Sunday afternoon. (Kelly, a former Broadway dancer, appears to spell her name as Madeleine.)

In a video that made the rounds first on TikTok before being deleted and uploaded by a user on Reddit, a woman—Kelly—is seen having a heated discussion with a flight attendant.

While it’s not clear what started the squabble, the clip begins with a Black flight attendant urging the woman to leave, and the woman telling him, “You don’t like the words coming out of my mouth. Free speech is dead!”

A nine-year-old girl who had a neighbor call the police on her as she worked to eradicate invasive insects from her home town has earned honors from one of the US’s most prestigious universities.

The Yale School of Public Health earlier this month held a ceremony citing Bobbi Wilson’s efforts to rid Caldwell, New Jersey, of the spotted lanternfly, according to university officials.

The 20 January gathering also recognized Bobbi for bestowing her personal collection of lanternflies to Yale’s Peabody Museum, which entered the collection into its database and listed the child as the donating scientist.

... Yet that day, police stopped and questioned the girl whose loved ones have nicknamed “Bobbi Wonder” after being summoned by a neighbor who considered the girl a suspicious person.

“There’s a little Black woman walking, spraying stuff on the sidewalks and trees,” the caller told police, CNN reported. “I don’t know what the hell she’s doing. Scares me, though.” ...

Former NJ councilman Gordon Lawshe calls cops on young black girl who was killing lanternflies

... The officer then tells her mother, Monique Joseph, that their neighbor had called.

“Are you serious?” Joseph asks the officer, moments after telling him their neighbor, a former local councilman, “could’ve just rang the bell.”

“Yeah, I guess he saw — I’m not sure. I’m not sure,” the officer replies. “You’re obviously next-door neighbors.”

The officer tells the girl she is “obviously fine.” The 9-year-old then asks if she’s in trouble, and he tells her no.

It’s unclear when the incident happened....

After chatting with Joseph and her daughter, the officer goes to talk to Lawshe, and explains that the young girl was catching and killing lanternflies.

“What a weirdo, huh?” Lawshe can be heard saying in the video.

The girl’s mother spoke out about the incident during an Oct. 22 city council meeting, telling borough leaders, “Racism, intentional or not, is still racism.”

“My neighbor’s words put my daughter in harm’s way. His words and actions were unconscionable, and the impact of the aftermath of this incident will not be kept secret. My 9-year-old daughter was afraid to go outside her front door the next day. She was afraid that her neighbor that she knows has a reason, unknown to her, to call the police on her,” Joseph said, according to the Daily Beast.

Following the incident, she also requested a meeting with her neighbor, but Lawshe never responded. An attorney he hired told the Daily Beast that her claim that her daughter is now afraid of police is “absurd” and that he was not engaging in racial profiling.

The list of things Karens call the cops for when it comes to Black people just keeps getting longer and more baffling. The latest addition to the list is shoveling snow. According to The Daily Beast, two Black men shoveled a lady’s sidewalk (for free) and she came outside threatening to call the police....

On cue, he took a TikTok video showing the ridiculousness which captured the Karen pulling snow with her shovel back on to the freshly shoveled sidewalk.

“Are you seriously mad because we cleaned off your sidewalk? We’re helping you,” McAdory says behind the camera. The woman then throws her shovel on the ground and pulls out her phone appearing to call 911.

“They’ll come faster if you say there’s two n—gers over here,” McAdory says in the video. The woman proceeds to tell the police, “These guys are African American. I don’t get along with them.”

A well-known South Florida environmental activist and general asshole, Mary Barley shows her kareness.


For years, environmental activist Mary Barley has advocated for public funds for the Everglades, which flows into Florida Bay. But lately she’s been working overtime to block the public from seeing it. At least not from the public road in front of her oceanfront home overlooking the bay.

“Private property” and “keep out” signs, a dozen trash cans, wood barriers and chain-link fencing recently blocked access to Florida Bay and looked, to pedestrians, about as unwelcoming as they were intended. The obstacles, placed intentionally by Barley to discourage foot and vehicle traffic, blocked public access to Florida Bay in the Village of Islamorada in the Florida Keys. According to media reports, Barley owns three properties along the road.

Over sixteen years, Barley has attempted to seize the public road as her own, filing lawsuits against her tiny town in the Florida Keys. She’s lost in the courts both times. More recently, she even offered a “trade” of sorts with the Village of Islamorada, offering a small parcel of land – without beach access – in exchange for the prime Florida Bay access road belonging to the public. When that effort also failed, Barley attempted to claim the land as her own anyway, through the use of the barricades. Channel 7 TV News in Miami reported she has since filed new legal documents claiming that the fencing, rocks, signs and other barricades constitute “improvements” that legally grant her control over the property"

That sort of thing rarely happens in Southern California. Public beach access is well-entrenched into the culture, and building codes are such that it wouldn't be easy to get by with. Not to say nobody ever does it, but compared to Florida, it's pretty rare. Florida has the law - they could enforce it better if they chose to.
