Since my local library has been closed for the past two months, I've been reading a lot of shit I've read before......today I was perusing through Hunter S. Thompson's "The Proud Highway - Saga of a Desperate Southern Gentleman 1955-1967" and came across a letter Hunter wrote to his friend William J. Kennedy (author of "Ironweed") and one line in Hunter's letter really jumped out at me. He wrote "At heart, this is a sick and vicious country, hiding from itself behind a veil of romantic sentimentality. In order to see this you have to know the West, where the myth is still extant." That was written in June 1964 and Hunter was commenting on the possibility that Goldwater would win the 64 election. And by "the West" he meant the Dakotas, Montana, and Wyoming. But it really struck me that the sickness and viciousness he spoke of is perpetually with us and has been whipped into a frenzy during the four years of trump. I have to laugh when I consider what Hunter would have written about him.
When we're travelling, we can't always get to a library. Some alternative places we've found are that many RV parks have a trading library, and the "little libraries" are getting more common. But Lady O especially likes Better World Books https://www.betterworldbooks.com/ that sells used and new books for prices ranging from less-than-anybody-else down to really cheap. And they raise a lot of funds to support literacy.

The library has a service in which one can go online and select books and then call them when you're outside the library and they will put books in your trunk. I don't like all that and refuse to participate. If I am going to read a book I want to inspect it in my hands and read the short bio of the author on the back flap as well as the summary of the book on the inside front cover before deciding if I want to read it. Besides, those treacherous library bastards might be smearing Covid all over those books they toss in your trunk. I've considered going down there and just parking and wait to catch them in the act but have not done so. There is a good book store that has a huge selection of new and used books but it's all the way on the other side of town in the currently dying former bustling mall so I may soon be heading over there.
