He was out of Russia after that in 2020 and once he went back, particularly knowing he would be jailed, he might as well have put the gun to his own head a got it over with.

IF his death results in Congress sending tens of billions to Ukraine, or even the release of $360B (I think) in embargoed Putin/Russian assets abroad to Ukraine or other anti-Putin works, it will have been a valuable sacrifice. It's risky to create a martyr.
