Robert Card's Military Background Revealed

... Card was due to retire from the army this year, according to a post from his now deleted Facebook account earlier this year.

Two senior law enforcement officials said that Card's unit commanders sent him for psychiatric treatment during the summer out of concern for threats he made to the base and his claims of hearing voices, NBC News reported.

Card underwent approximately two weeks of inpatient psychiatric treatment before being discharged. It remains unclear what subsequent actions were taken.
That would be extremely important to know.
A Defense Department official disclosed that Card's unit, the 3rd Battalion, 304th Infantry Regiment in Saco, Maine, requested law enforcement intervention in July after being alarmed by his erratic behavior. New York State Police responded and transported him to Keller Army Community Hospital at the U.S. Military Academy for an evaluation, according to NBC News.

Army spokesperson Bryce Dubee said in a statement that the Army did not provide training for him as a firearms instructor, and nor did he serve in such a capacity within the Army, the outlet reported....
No one thought to take away his guns?! Someone - unit commanders, Keller Army Hospital or both - really dropped the ball here. Card announced what he was going to do and why, then did it.

Shooting kills 2 and injures 18 victims in Florida street with hundreds of people nearby

A fight between two groups turned deadly in Florida when a shooting in a Tampa street during Halloween festivities resulted in two deaths and 18 people hospitalized early Sunday morning, police said. One suspect is in custody and at least one more is being sought.
In Florida? I'm shocked. I thought that, "An armed society is a polite society." :wtf:
... Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, a former city police chief, said the problem isn't a lack of policing, but the easy access to guns.

“Yet again, a senseless loss of life by those choosing to settle a dispute with firearms. Lives lost and others forever changed. To what end? The Tampa Police Department had 50 officers deployed in the area at the time, so this is not a law enforcement issue. Bad decisions made in a split second and the proliferation of readily available guns are responsible for these almost daily incidents,” she said in a statement....
Yep

Alleged Maine gunman tried to buy a silencer months before Lewiston shootings
The try failed due to a "self-incriminating" answer on a form, store owner said.

... On one box of a form required to complete the transfer, which was reviewed by ABC News, Card’s answer caught the attention of the store’s staff: “have you ever been adjudicated as a mental defective or have you ever been committed to a mental institution?” Card marked with an X, indicating “yes.”

... But with Card’s 'X' on the spot, LaChapelle explained, his employees told the man they could not release the silencer to him....
In a sane society Card’s weapons would have already been seized, especially since he was committed for hearing voices and making threats. If not, the attempted silencer purchase should have triggered seizure.

1 dead, 8 others injured in shooting at large party in Indianapolis, Indiana: Police
All nine victims are between 16-22 years old, police said.

New details: Dead male at Glenwood Caverns had weaponry, ammunition, explosives

A male discovered dead at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park on Saturday had weaponry, ammunition and explosives on him, according to details released from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office.

The male, a 22-year-old Carbondale resident, was found dead at the Glenwood amusement park shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday. The death, which park officials suspected as a suicide, prompted an investigation by the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office....

“He was dressed in black colored tactical clothing, bearing patches and emblems that gave the appearance of being associated with law enforcement,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a Monday statement. “The suspect had been heavily armed with a semi-automatic rifle and semi-automatic handgun and multiple, loaded magazines for both weapons. He was wearing body armor and what appeared to be a ballistic helmet. Additionally multiple improvised explosive devices, (IEDs), were discovered with the suspect and in a vehicle associated with the suspect.”
 Thanks, Bozobert :angry-cussing:
... “The Garfield County Coroner was onsite and states that they are investigating the death as a suicide....

Father of accused July Fourth gunman in Chicago suburb pleads guilty
An Illinois father pleaded guilty on Monday to multiple counts of reckless conduct for helping his troubled underage son obtain a gun that the latter used to kill seven people at a Fourth of July parade in 2022.

Illinois Circuit Court Judge George Strickland sentenced Robert Crimo Jr. to two years of probation and 60 days in custody of the Lake County sheriff, as well as 100 hours of public service. The father of the accused shooter was also ordered to surrender his firearm owner identification card and any ammunition.
Misdemeanors? I wonder what the prosecutor's rationale is. Would it be so light if not for our sick country's ammosexuality?
Crimo Jr.'s lawyer told reporters outside the courtroom that his client had pleaded guilty to prevent his trial from becoming a "public spectacle" or jeopardizing his son's case by disclosing key evidence before the younger Crimo's trial.
What are they hiding?
"It appeared that, as we got closer to trial, the state's strategy required pitting Mr. Crimo's family against each other," said the attorney, George Gomez.
So??? Is the attorney oblivious to the precipitating event? Absent full and instant accountability this is a family that should be pitted against each other.
The case against Crimo Jr. marks at least the second time a parent in the United States has been prosecuted in connection with crimes allegedly committed by their child. Experts say the guilty plea could help expand the number of people held liable in future mass shootings.
Good.
In October, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the parents of a teenager who shot four classmates to death at a Detroit-area high school would stand trial for involuntary manslaughter for buying their son a firearm despite knowing he was mentally disturbed.
Good. This Detroit-area trial may bolster the son's insanity defense, not that I necessarily think that he's sane.
... A grand jury charged the elder Crimo in February with seven counts of reckless conduct for sponsoring his son's 2019 application for a firearm owner identification (FOID) card, despite knowing his son was unfit to own a gun.
Sounds like the elder Crimo plead to exactly what the grand jury charged him with, though that in turn may have been what the prosecutor requested. Whichever, perhaps the charging was too light, especially compared to the Detroit-area case.
... Local police received reports in September 2019 that the younger Crimo had allegedly directed threats to "kill everyone" at his family members, and searched his home.

They seized a collection of 16 knives, a dagger and a sword amassed by Crimo, though no arrest was made as authorities at the time lacked probable cause to take him into custody, authorities said.
Ugh, definitely a case for mandatory stronger gun laws that apply to abettors. Maybe removing some prosecutorial discretion is the answer. Has IL taken any action in the wake of the tragedy? Might they after this "slap on the wrist" verdict? Maybe write your reps and governor and ask/demand?

Federal appeals court upholds Illinois gun ban, finds no 2nd Amendment protection for assault weapons
The court found that Illinois’ controversial gun law survived the first part of a two-step test laid out in a crucial June 2022 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court.

So, that was in the wake of HP. Good. I hope that stronger mandatory penalties for abetting are included, and I hope IL's law survives the inevitable SCOTUS test.

It'll be a long road and it had to happen in a blue state to even start making a dent in the problem. Maybe in 20 more years there will be a real difference?

It would be a nice legacy.

Major progress.
Supreme Court leaves Illinois semiautomatic gun ban in place

... Illinois passed the ban on assault weapons after the 2022 Independence Day parade shooting that left seven people dead and 48 wounded. The gunmen in the July 4th shooting fired 83 rounds in under a minute using an AR-15. The ban prevents people from owning semiautomatic weapons, such as the one used in that shooting, as well as magazines that enable handguns and rifles to fire off many rounds without reloading....

An ideologically mixed panel of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the law, however, writing that the Supreme Court's recent decision on the right to bear arms "extends only to weapons in common use for a lawful purpose," not to semiautomatic weapons that "are much more like machine guns and military-grade weaponry than they are like the many different types of firearms that are used for individual self-defense."
:happy-cheerleaderkid:

Caveat:
... The court's action on Thursday, leaving the Illinois law in place, is not a decision on the merits of the case; as of now, there have been no conflicting decisions by lower appeals courts, and the justices may well have felt there was no need to intervene without such a conflict.

He warned authorities about the Maine gunman, but they downplayed his texts. Now he’s speaking out

Who was warned?
Army Reserve
Sagadahoc County Sheriff
The psychiatric unit of a New York hospital

All chose to keep Robert Card armed.

Now, the slow-walking, coverup and excuse-making are fully engaged.
