We spend 750 billion a year on "defense", more than the next twelve countries combined.

Why is it our adversaries always seem to be able to so much more with less?

Is it simply a case of logistics? Regardless, no one seems to fear us. Yesterday China, today it's Putin's turn.

Russia is massing troops near Ukraine border, sending shivers of unease through the West

I have a thought - the US record of success militarily has been pretty lame since WWII, but mainly I think it may be that the US has put way too much emphasis on being a "super-power" nuclear bomb wielding bully. I'm pretty sure everybody is fairly certain we're not really going to nuke them and we're notorious for getting our asses kicked around by guys shooting machine guns off the beds of 1990 Toyota pickups or off camel's backs and taking out our troop carriers with bombs made in garages.
To quote Catherine Trammell: "What are you gonna do? Charge me with smoking?"

The other thing is our ability to project power is getting more limited. Both Russia and China have developed carrier killing weapons with ranges greater than a carrier strike capability. Next we'll have four billion dollar boats steaming around the ocean unable to attack anything.

Stumbled on this:

(Novelist!) Ally Sheedy at age 13 on "To Tell the Truth" (1975)

8 years from being WarGames crushable.

Aww, you couldn't find a better pic?

Kind of meant currently, but I might be out of the picture.

"Basket case" Allison Reynolds, who was not even sentenced to Saturday detention, or post-makeover Allison?

I think it's laudable that she and Molly Ringwald agreed in the 30th anniversary interview this year that any remake should be more racially and elsewise (sexual orientation, other?) diverse. I see that City College of New York theater professor Sheedy has a trans son.

Sure they were all white, but the original characters were indeed diverse, as was the point of the film. It isn't necessary to include every form of diversity in every story (IMNVHO). Make the Anthony Michael Hall character gay, the Emelio Estevez jock character Black, and Ali Sheedy's goth character a trans, and Judd Nelson's character Hispanic and the story would be the same but you'd get howls of stereotyping.

Okay, but that's your stereotyping ;) The Emelio Estevez jock character should be Black AND gay, the "brain" Anthony Michael Hall character Hispanic, the "criminal" Judd Nelson character disabled, and the "princess" Molly Ringwald character trans  The Ally Sheedy "basket case" character can remain a suburban White, it's fitting :P

No way is a gay Black high school jock believable, nor would be a disabled delinquent. All the characters in the original were, within the bounds of being a movie, very believable and represented people that probably all of us knew (or were) in high school. That's what made it so good.
