2023 Elections

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

NYT has called Virginia Senate for Dems with two still in play, looking real good for the House. 48 to Dems, 41 to Republicans with six more leaning Democratic (52 needed).

Mississippi guy didn't do enough with the Elvis connection. He could have made the campaign more fun for everybody. Fake Elvi assistants, free weddings with an Elvis, shuffle dancers at campaign events...

Mississippi Rs could run electronic raves with Ecstasy and still get elected.

Origins, according to Wiki:
The Melbourne shuffle is a rave dance that developed in the 1980s. Typically performed to electronic music, the dance originated in the Melbourne rave scene and was popular in the late 1980s and 1990s. The dance moves involve a fast heel-and-toe movement or T-step, combined with a variation of the running man coupled with a matching arm action. The dance is improvised and involves "repeatedly shuffling your feet inwards, then outwards, while thrusting your arms up and down, or side to side, in time with the beat". Other moves can be incorporated including 360-degree spins and jumps and slides....

In 2009, the German hard dance group Scooter featured dancers Pae (Missaghi Peyman) and Sarah Miatt performing the Melbourne shuffle on the streets of Melbourne (Australia) in the music video of their single J'adore Hardcore....

Who knew?

Supposedly one of the greats -0-?

Excellent, but techno drives me batty without the right drugs on board. This illustrates how shuffle evolved from techno, though:

Democrats win in several states on abortion rights and other highlights from Tuesday's elections

Image
Election 2023 Ohio Abortion
Issue 1 supporters celebrate as Rhiannon Carnes, executive director, Ohio Women's Alliance, speaks at a watch party, Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023, in Columbus Ohio. Ohio voters have approved a constitutional amendment that guarantees the right to abortion and other forms of reproductive health care. The outcome of Tuesday’s intense, off-year election was the latest blow for abortion opponents.

... Abortion rights supporters won an Ohio ballot measure and the Democratic governor of beet-red Kentucky held onto his office by campaigning on reproductive rights and painting his opponent as extremist. A Democrat won an open seat on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court after campaigning on his pledge to uphold abortion rights. And Democrats took full control of the Virginia statehouse, blocking Republicans from being able to pass new abortion restrictions and delivering a defeat to Gov. Glenn Youngkin that may douse any buzz about a late entry into the GOP presidential primary.
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Zr3ZyoBGyw
... Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear was reelected in a state that Trump had won by 26 percentage points. Beshear had criticized the abortion views of his Republican challenger, Attorney General Daniel Cameron, in debates and television ads. One Beshear ad featured a woman who miscarried after being raped by her stepfather at age 12 expressing disbelief at Cameron's opposition to abortion in cases of rape and incest....

Youngkin didn’t really have a path forward in the presidential primary — his window to get on the ballot has already closed in some states. Virginia has an unusual single-term limit for governors, making Youngkin’s political future even more of a question.

Whatever he does, he’ll have to explain 2023. And he'll face unified Democratic control of the statehouse for the rest of his term.
:---P Awww, sucks being a chastened lame duck. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoyvvEWHodk
... Former Biden White House aide Gabe Amo will become the first Black member of Congress from Rhode Island after winning the special election in that state’s first congressional district.

The son of West African immigrants, Amo emerged from a 12-candidate September primary to succeed retiring Rep. David Cicilline....

And Philadelphia will have its first female mayor after Democrat Cherelle Parker defeated Republican David Oh in the overwhelmingly Democratic city.

But yep, a gat gingered f can be a g.

2023 election results: Historic firsts in Virginia and Rhode Island; Moms for Liberty fails and other important outcomes you may have missed
For the most part, Republican culture war issues failed to resonate

... History made in Virginia

Danica Roem became the first transgender person elected to a state legislature in 2017, when she won a seat in Virginia’s House of Delegates. On Tuesday, Roem made history again, prevailing against her Republican opponent, former police officer Bill Woolf, to become the first transgender person elected to the state Senate (in the South)....
Coming to a library near you - State Senator Reading Hour.
Republicans fall short in New Jersey

... This year, Republicans hoped to use cultural issues to win back control of either the state Senate or Assembly. The deepening unpopularity of President Biden and a new corruption scandal involving Sen. Robert Menendez, a Democrat, seemed to work in their favor.

... Democrats held on to both the upper and lower chamber of the state legislature in Trenton....
GoWhack9Go
School boards show culture war limits

... On Tuesday, candidates supported by Moms for Liberty lost in Bucks County, Pa., and Loudoun County, Va., where suburban voting can sometimes point to developing national trends. Candidates affiliated with the extremist organization also fared poorly in Iowa, where three school boards in suburban Des Moines flipped to Democratic control....
Rather than bizarre wingnuttery and vile bigotry maybe Moms for "Liberty" should try reading to kids.

Gotta feel optimistic heading into 2024.

It could have easily been 22-48 in the Virginia State Senate. However, the Dem literal sexy nurse lost by less than a thousand votes, 51-48. Too bad, but good on the likely lecherous 16,912 that stuck with Gibson ;) O Susanna!
